It’s funny how some of the things we as Internet Marketers do, like social bookmarking seem so tedious, driest and extremely boring but means so much to our Internet Home Business. We tend to see the value of the link building and getting higher search engine ranking much more than the laborious work involved in completing such tasks.

Thankfully with today’s technology, more advanced software and tools are being developed so rapidly some of these tedious jobs are becoming more acceptable and manageable. One of these new tools I came across is a firefox addon called OnlyWire which lets you distribute and broadcast your content to 36 social bookmarking sites at a click of a button. If you don’t wish to purchase this tool, not a problem; they just require you to put a ‘bookmark and share’ button (see below this post) on your website to be able to use their service for free. That’s not a bad deal isn’t it? The only work you have to do, one time though, is signing up with all these social bookmarking sites, although I’m sure you already have accounts opened for some.

The benefit of using this tool is that you only need to bookmark your blog or static pages once after signing in to Onlywire and the program then submits to all these sites you have signed up, in seconds.

What To Bookmark

You should give it some thought as to what content you want to get social bookmarked, for the sole reason that everything that is bookmarked is being shared in public. So it makes sense to share content that you think is useful to others. Well that is if you don’t mind having also a little more traffic from people who find your content interesting and compelling enough to pay your website a visit.

Common sense rules too since you don’t want to be seen as bookmarking useless or spamy content just to get the backlink. It may not only get your bookmark deleted, but your account banned and url blacklisted as well.

How Should You Bookmark

Most of us bookmark more for SEO benefit i.e. backlinks rather than the traffic that comes to your site. Many people make the mistake of just copying any text in their content page. It is important to note that for good SEO benefit, this content should be optimised with your keyword phrase that your are ranking for. Therefore make sure you have your keywords appearing in the title, description body text and tags of the bookmark to get this credit.

DoFollow or No-Follow

It’s a never ending topic isn’t it. Well some of these social bookmarketing sites are nofollow and it’s your choice if you prefer to sign-up only with dofollow sites just to get the backlinks. Another school of thought is that these other nofollow sites have their own qualities too and favored by other search engines like Yahoo or Bing. It’s also more natural to have both dofollow and nofollow links even in the eyes of Google.  Some nofollow backlinks can indirectly lead to a dofollow links when they have been re-posted by someone who likes your post or by aggregators’ sites who are usually dofollow sites.

What I really like about this tool is that the plugin is easy to install and it can be set up to automatically bookmark these sites each time you publish a new blog post. That’s called working smart and not working hard

For those who are not too crazy about social bookmarking…

Well there are always 2 sides of a coin and I too used to question if too much social bookmarking is bad practice or bad seo. Well there are 2 things that you can do here. Firstly, don’t go overboard by doing too much bookmarking but do it on a moderate scale since it is so easy to do.

Secondly? Well there is another free tool that I’ve been using too and it probably suits these skeptics more than you’ll ever know. Take a look at Caroline Middlebrook’s IMAutomator social bookmarking tool which has a free and a paid service. This tool is pretty awesome and gives the word “auto-pilot” a whole new meaning. The set-up is simple and once you have submitted a bookmark, it works behind the scene to bookmark 15 dofollow sites for you at a predefined number of days you want your links to be spread over. Pretty Cool! For a free account, you are allowed a maximum 10 bookmark submissions in a day so this means it can give you a possible 150 backlinks per day. Well go check it out will you.
