Twitter clients are sprouting up all over ever since Twitter, the micro blogging service was made known publicly in Mar 2006. Even more so now than ever before. Personally I must admit, I’m a little late in finding out what are some of the better twitter tools out there that others are raving about. Well that’s going to change, yes starting from this post. Why is this so? Because 2 days ago one heck of a Twitter client came visiting on this work at home blog.
How it all started
One of my posts “Case Study: How 5 Outbound Links Gave Me 500 Incoming Links” that is very popular with many readers started this phenomenon . This post was submitted by 2 different bloggers to designbump.com and andysowards.com so I figured they too took some liking to this post.
It didn’t dawn on me what I was about to experience in the next 8 hours but if there is one thing that quickly caught my attention, it has to be this: this site, “designbump” has PR5 and excellent traffic in Alexa rating of 46K. Well since this site allows submission of posts, naturally I did just that and submitted another popular post “10 Blogging Mistakes To Avoid“, written by my guest blogger. It’s something most of us do anyway, submit and don’t really care two hoots about it. Well no, not this time it seems.
How much traffic came?
Well I spent the night watching the traffic grow non-stop if that could give you an idea what’s it like. The end result is this:
So what the heck happened?
Well of the people who saw and read these 2 posts, there were probably a few of them who liked it and started to retweet the post. Just staring at how the traffic grew that night I’m beginning to see some real benefits of using Twitter. But while checking what was really going on, I stumbled upon one common thing among all the bloggers who retweeted this post. All of them used TweetDeck.
What is TweetDeck
TweetDeck is an Adobe Air desktop application that displays more than the usual one column of information at a time – up to 10 columns of your choice to be exact. Common columns would be for your twitter replies, twitter searches and groups to name a few. My favorite features are:
- shorten url (now I don’t have to waste time login separately to TinyUrl to do this)
- sending tweets to my favorite bloggers is so easy using the Tweetdeck panel
- Forming groups – something I heard before but didn’t know how important this is and it’s useful if you want a specific tweet to go only to selected people.
- you can retweet any of your followers’ tweets easily.

What we can learn in this case study
Twitter tools can bring you traffic just from understanding and rationalizing what had happened in this case. If you have a good compelling post title that promises a good unique content, people will be interested to read more. Once they are convinced the catchy headline has delivered its promise, they will only be too happy to retweet it. The fact that the retweeters belong to a group in a top twitter client that is active in Twittering probably exploded the traffic.
Final Thoughts
If you are someone who has not tried any Twitter client, you should try TweetDeck to find out some of these features which may be similar to others. Then at your own time look for any better ones later as I’m sure these tools are getting better each day. Don’t miss out on some of these powerful Twitter tools that are made available free to everyone. If TweetDeck can give me 293 page views in a night just for one single post, don’t you think this tool and Twitter definitely can help leverage our business to the next level of success?

Hey Peter, I was wandering what caused you to jump a couple of spots in Cool Blog Links and now I know. Another great find mate. I’ve submitted one of my posts to Design Bump, just to see what happens, and if nothing happens, it’s ok, I know where your blog is LOL.
I downloaded Tweetdeck a couple of weeks ago but haven’t really played around with it yet due to the normal time constraints.

I love TweetDeck! My favorite feature is being able to assign followers to groups. That way I don’t lose their Tweets in the stream as easily. I also like the shorten feature – it’s one less step in the Tweeting process!

I use a firefox plugin that shortens URLs and allows me to post Tweets from the URL window. Still, TweetDeck looks cool!

Tweetdeck is great I have been using it for a couple of months now and am very pleased at how well it lets me connect with others.
Another nice twitter addition for me has been the inclusion of the automatic twitter profile plugin for wordpress. Not only does it link comments to a persons twitter account it adds another searchable marker to your blog much the way CommentLuv and KeywordLuv do. Check out that nifty plugin and a few others on the page I linked too.

Yea, I’m beginning to use twitter for some serious traffic too..but I’m learning each day that there are so many ways to tweet–it’s crazy..

That’s a lot of traffic for simply pushing content that has already been created on your site. Hopefully some of the visitors will sign up and become regular readers of your blog. Did all the traffic convert to make some extra sales?

Hey Peter,
I've been using the Twhirl application, which is very similar to TweetDeck. I see TweetDeck does provide more features, so maybe I'll give it a try. I haven't seen a side-by-side comparison, but I noticed a lot more people using TweetDeck. I guess I'm the minority… LOL. Very interesting statistics, though, which just shows how powerful Twitter can be.

Thats the same tool I am using TweetDeck, its a very comprehensive tool I may dare to say better than using Twitter alone.
Other Site I have seen some traffic it is Stumble Upon, it gives me about 400 visits. Of course I alway use Twitter too.

Thank you for bringing these tools to my attention. I am researching how different social networking site can impact my marketing efforts and have not signed up for any yet because the uses are truly new to me. I'm honestly starting to lose my enamoration with twitter in general. Not sure that it still provides the value it once did. Anymore it seems to be a spamfest. Sure it drives traffic to your sites but that traffic isn't much more reliable than traffic from Stumble Upon.
