The Truth About Using Duplicate Content On Your Blogs

passive income ideas graphic
The topic of duplicate content is a highly debated one with my many bloggers. Well late last year, Google hosted its third Online Webmaster Chat and revealed among other things “Google Does Not Penalize Duplicate Contents“.

Now this ought to put an end to your questions, worries, fears and you now can start to use duplicate contents to your heart’s content. But is this new Google revelation as simple as it sounds? Why do I get this feeling it’s a start to more questions, anger, myths, uncertainties brought about by Google?

What is Duplicate Content?

Duplicate content exists when you have more than one version of the same article or post on your site or you used the same article to submit to numerous article directories.

Google’s No Penalty - Truth, Lies, or Total BS?

Any Difference between a Google Penalty and Google Ban?

Some of us relate to a “Google Penalty” as something serious, like a Google Ban on your site. But there is actually a distinction between a Google Ban vs Google Penalty. A site which is penalized may not necessary be banned. It just means that this penalized site now does not rank for their own keywords. On the other hand if your site gets banned, that’s more serious as your site is no longer indexed by Google.

What some of my friends have said about Google’s “We don’t penalize duplicate contents” infamous statement.

1. “The respondent said, “…none of the search engines penalize duplicate content — they just ignore the duplicates,” which to me means the same thing, different words. We call it “penalize.” They call it “ignore.” The result is the same - no credit for “duplicate” content. (GT Bulmer)

2. You could have exact same copies of an article all over the net. Yes, maybe only one article will show up in a search. But… a different article (exact same version) could show up for a completely different searched keyword phrase.

Ignored? To a point. I guess it depends how you look at it. I honestly don’t take the time to create different versions of the same article. Too time consuming. I change my anchor text link in the resource box for a different keyword, that’s about it. If I don’t get credit for those backlinks… oh well. (Alan Mater)

3. I have another blog that I do absolutely nothing with and it is filled with duplicate content. Actually 90% of the post are duplicate content and in 3 months with almost no visitors it now has a PR of 1. That link I just posted might be the only backlink the blog has on the internet. If it was being ignored due to duplicate content it wouldn’t have any rank, but it does?

That leaves us with exactly what we started with, nothing. My belief is, no one knows how Google ticks not even Google employees.(Stephen Meyer)

4. Search Engine want to provide useful information to user, they don’t want to show the same result all on the top 10 list, this will not add value to the user.

- So they start to filter out “similar” content, and only 1 “similar” content will show.
- Which “similar” content to show with be decided by the back links of that page, so if your page rank and back links is high, even you have duplicate content, your page still shows!(KKChoon)

5. Usually Google will index multiple versions of the same content however it will only rank one version, the site which has the most trust. So if you submit an article to a whole bunch of article directories including EzineArticles, it will usually be the one on EzineArticles which ranks well as it is the most trusted article directory.(Mike Law)

The most significant thing I did during this “We don’t penalize duplicate content” discussion

I started a new Wordpress blog and used articles that I submitted to EzineArticles. This blog is now PR1 after the last update just after 1 month. You could say they are duplicate contents but I could say it’s not entirely so since they are not found on the same site and I made it somewhat unique in some small ways. I made one significant change to rewrite the first and last paragraphs and have the post title changed. This new Wordpress blog is started solely for my link building strategy, not traffic building. Well I guess the real test would be to see if it goes to PR2 in the next PR update.

Can Original Content Beat Duplicate, Rehashed Content?

“Content is King”. So this is what we’ve been told, schooled from the day we decided to venture into an online business opportunity not too long ago. It’s also associated with writing unique and original contents on your work at home blog. To think that people are using rehashed or duplicate content on their blogs, that’s something quite unheard of in the early days of blogging. But this seems quite the usual practice now. It’s also pissing given people who only write original content something to think about….seriously like Garry Conn who said:

I write a lot of posts on my blog and I know for a fact that a lot of people read what I write. I see many other blogs who write (rehash) things that have been covered countless times over the last three and even four years and they get pretty decent reactions out of it. What I write is pretty darn unique and original (at least I think so) but I never seem to get the reaction I desire. (Something is missing… what I don’t know).

Could this be a new way of finding success in blogging? Perhaps it’s the reason why I see many bloggers turning to using duplicate contents from an automated blogging software or plugin. Is this called blogging smart and not blogging hard. Is this going to be an accepted way of gaming the system. I’m not sure, what do you think?

Tell us what you’ve got to say about using Duplicate Contents on your Blog?

Tell us what you think about duplicate contents? Do you sense double talk by Google and just how much do you believe it. Do you make use of duplicate content in any way, for whatever reasons. Tell us by giving a comment here.

Over to you…..

  • Google does not penalize duplicates, they just ignore. I know this because when I post a unique article on my blog and then post it to many directories including ezinearticles in a matter of hours when i type in the keyword that i was trying to rank guess what shows up.. no not my site, but ezinearticles. This is because google has ignored my page and has ranked ezinearticle because of it's authority.

So, I really hate google for that :/
  • @MLM v Top Tier: Yes I know that's a common problem. But I guess if you have a compelling bio on your EZA post, people would still come to your site.
  • wordpress blogs have a problem about /tags and /categories

the same content in different pages. how can we resolve this ? :/
  • well i think duplicate content has no demerit.

Website and Blog making was very easy before 2 years but now according to google's new algorithm google hate with duplicate content and always looking for fresh content.

  • Peter Lee, I just visited your mentioned blog and it seems that it has a Google PR of N/A right now. I wonder how that happened - is that maybe a sign that duplicate content is after all an issue with Google?
  • @Petra Weiss: I have no answer at the moment. Perhaps I didn't have much content on that blog and it now is in the sandbox or Google may have changed some of their algorithm measurement...again. Anyway always expect the unexpected with Google. For the time being I'll not use duplicate contents even if they belong to me.
  • I am going to follow your lead on this one because I have two websites that almost mirror each other but I tried to make the different enough that the SERP's would not penalize me. The funny thing is I can't seem to get two of the webpages to get ranked for their keywords and I thnk it because I didn't make the two different enough. So after reading this post I am going to rewrite the webpage on my leading site and hopfully it will also positively impact the secondary webpage.
  • I have seen a blog which 100% copies the text from different blogs and just give a backlink as credit (the anchor text font is quite small). I have seen that blog having high ranking for Google. That always have created doubts in my mind about duplicate content.
  • Hi Peter,

Just came from Yan´s blog and he does not like duplicate content, he said you cannot get into the first page of G with only duplicate content as with a Niche Marketing site or MFA.

Now, I dont know what to do, since I believ in write for myself but do not have the time with my current job (which I want to quit soon)to write a lot of content.

    What would you do?

Hi Peter. I really have that question in mind for so long. But why it is that article directories who has articles that are distributed in many sites are making it to the first page in the search engine results.
  • It would not be fair if you where penalized by google. This would mean that you could attack your competitors simply by duplicating their content.
  • Hi Peter,

Even though this is good to know, I never duplicate my content. I feel that it's too important to provide unique material each time I sit down to write. I view myself as providing a service to others, and if I provide a unique service, people will find me. And they have. I don't view it as a numbers game but a relationships game. People will always be attracted to you if you provide new, fresh information for them to learn from every single day. As you can imagine I operate on a creative plane of thought ;)

    Thanks for providing your insight.

  • Pretty much all you have to do to debunk the duplicate content penalty is to Google on the lyrics to a song like 'satisfaction lyrics' or on a popular AP news story. You'll see page after page of duplicate or near duplicate content in your results.

The bottom line is that things like incoming links and domain age and authority is what matters when it comes to how things will rank.

  • hi Peter,
Good summary and analysis. I've read about this and other google questions until my head hurts. I've decided this... google ignores some duplicate content and penalizes too much. But since I write my own stuff and have no interest in copying others, it doesn't matter that much to me.

  • I think duplicate content comes in 2 forms the first you have outlined which is the direct copying of other writes material, which i agree is bad practice and the original author should be credited with a link if they indeed give you permission to use the article. The second kind is very common on ecommerce websites where one product comes in 20 different colours or variations which may mean that you have 20 separate pages for people to buy those products from hence creating duplicate content. If you want to submit your products to sell through Froogle/Google shopping you have to place each product on their own separate page which means google in effect is forcing people to create the duplicate content.
  • @khaled: That's a very good point you've made that I hadn't thought of.I guess such sites will always have duplicate contents. Thanks for joining the conversation. Hope to see you around again.

  • Hi Peter,

I agree with Stephen Meyer, Nobody really knows what Google Penalize or Ban and if you know one day then the next day could be entirely different, they change too much and does not have a real rule. I have a PR3 and still does not how did I got it, mean which of my strategies worked better, who knows, not even Google employees will know.

I think the only we can do is stick with the basics, trying no to do too many duplicates and a lot of comments in blogs with Top Commentator widgets like your site and of course mine.

    Luis
  • I always try to write original content, but too often times I see scrapper sites doing well, which upsets me. Anyways, there are a ton of forums that use duplicate content, but it doesn't seem to hurt them. They use the news aggregator bots it seems.

  • I think it is still best to write unique content for your blog. No person would want to visit a blog with content he/she can also find somewhere else. Duplicate content is beneficial to blogs ranking higher in google. If your blog ranks lower, you might end up with no visitor at all.

  • Hi Peter,

I have two takes on this. My first one is that I have articles that I've written, not on my blog, that have been duplicated in many places across the internet. Thing is, at least I got attribution for all of them, and they're not articles that I also put on my site. If any of those articles were on my site originally, then they'd best stay with me, because I don't give permission for anyone to copy my articles, or my blog post, for online purposes. For offline purposes, different story.

Two, there probably is a lot of stuff out there that most of us never see. If one of our friends finds something and wants to share with others on their blog, I personally love a part of that. However, I think it's a bad thing to post the entire article, and then not share any of your ideas on the article. It doesn't help you as far as unique content, although it might help you if others have no idea it's not your stuff. However, I think it damages one's credibility to do it, especially if they're not giving attribution to the original writer. It's almost worse than scraping, because it's done intentionally, whereas scraping software doesn't really know who it's stealing from.

You can bet that I'm never going to use anyone else's stuff on any of my blogs. I certainly will quote and link, but, well, as you see here, I just have too much original stuff to say. :-)

Mitchs last blog post..The Art Of Hype
  • @Mitch: I feel the same way too. I can't understand why people do that apart from being a lazy blogger. They may achieve short term success if I can even call that and if that's what they want. But in the long term, people are going to see through what kind of blogger he really is.

    Online Business Opportunities
  • Wow, we sure do think alike Mitch, but I must say that you certainly have a way with words. You hit the nail on the head though when you said that not adding to the copied article with your own original content as well as not giving attribution isn't really adding to a blogs unique content and is certainly damaging to ones credibility.
  • I see no problem with duplicate content but I do have a problem with plagiarism. I have just come across a blogger, one that I will not name, who has copy an pasted an entire article as his own. There is no mention of the original author and he is currently basking in a heap of comments, all saying what a brilliant article it is.

Like I said I have no problem with it as long as you give credit where credit is due.

  • In my opinion duplicate content penalty is well arguable at best.

The one thing that I always point out is humour blogs/sites etc. as well as gossip blogs/sites.

They the prior more so have the same content and they all rank for it; for example google 'Same Actor, Wrong Role' and you see multiple sites with the same content ranking for it.

The 'penalty' is more I think to do with the sites/posts age and SEO strength rather then any penalty for using duplicate content.

  • Interesting topic. The PR issue for duplicate content could easily be checked because most of the PIPS members have blogs with PLR articles from Niche Article Club (the 30 days guide).I doubt that all of them have re-written the articles to make them unique.

The Warrior forum´s PIPS-section could hold the answer.

  • It often seems that Google's "clarifications" just further muddy the question. Many people consider duplicate content to be when you post someone else's content onto another site (probably your own site). I am sure Google doesn't find this form of duplicate content acceptable?
  • @Netbook Insider Forum: The fact is that many bloggers use each other's post partially with a link to the post url or use the whole post, provided we give credit to the writer. Well Google has openly said no penalty but the question of who gets the indexing, backlink, ranking in SERP etc is not quite clearly understood.

I think the duplicate content meme gets a flogging because there is a constant stream of new marketers to sell the idea to. It's like the Adsense myth that approval will take at least a week and your site must be six months old and full of content, which of course is not true.
