Health Plans
When you work for someone else, the health plan is easy to sign up for and generally affordable. When you work for yourself, you will find things are a bit more complicated and expensive. You will have a wide choice of plans to choose from, but understanding them is now your sole responsibility, not Human Resources. You may also find that a Health Savings Account works best for you, but again, it will take some research to see which plan best fits your lifestyle, your future goals, and your finances.
Retirement
As with health planning, retirement planning is not optional. It doesn’t matter if you have a great business and never save a dime for retirement. You don’t want to be in the position to have to work, even when you no longer are able to do it comfortably. So, you will have to check out your own retirement plans and sit with a banker to understand your options. That money should be there for you when you need it later and it can be harder to avoid dipping into it when it’s right at your fingertips, unlike an employer’s plan. You will need discipline and a whole lot of foresight to get your retirement planning done right. In the end, your money should work for you for long-term goals as well as short-term wealth.
