Work At Home Business-The Awful Truth
Let’s face it. There are still too many people who believe that online business opportunities are quick ways to start a home business. But the reality is that 95 percent of new online business owners fail to maintain their businesses, let alone make money. I suspect with the current world recession with more people losing jobs, having a wrong purpose and focus, this rate may get even higher.
Is Making Money Online Tough?
You bet it is. Don’t believe what you hear or read that making money is easy. It never is nor will it get any easier in the future. But what about those who found success who made up the 5 percent cohort? Well that’s easy – simply put they found a proven system that works and a vehicle or platform to drive their business – a successful website.
What Skills are needed to Make Money Online?
1. Your journey to the Internet Marketing world can be full of surprises when you are new at it. It’s important to follow a marketing plan and stay on course whenever you encounter setbacks.
2. Be ready and willing to learn the business. Learn the skills to be able to motivate yourself and push yourself to your optimum.
3. Learn to identify trend settings and changes and be prepared to change your business strategy when it’s needed.
4. Have a clear objective of your business goals. Working smart is better than working hard if you want to generate multiple streams of income for your online business.
Choosing An Honest Proven Home Business
Some of the key elements of a successful online business opportunities are:
- a focused market – the more focus, the better
- a product people in the market are hungry for
- a good marketing strategy – to put your product in front of prospective buyers
- attract high quality targeted traffic to your site
Do You Really Need A Website
While it’s still possible to start a home business without a website, it’s definitely more convenient to have one. With such keen competition around you, having a web presence inevitably helps to expedite your business growth and expand your market significantly.
With a website, you also make yourself available to your customers in other time zones across the globe, not just your local geographical area. Advertising campaigns are now done cheaper and more effectively and gone are the days of using cumbersome and costly mailing lists. It has even spawn newer technologies like web 2.0. So keeping abreast of web technology changes is vital if you want to reap whatever potential benefits they bring to your website.
There are people who have built successful website businesses with little or no previous internet skills. So Although there are no special qualifications like Internet Marketing or website design to start out an online business opportunity, it is important to find one that works. Check out this Honest-HomeBusiness.com which looks promising and teaches you “how to build a successful website business that really earns money even as a complete beginner“.

Lots of patience its the key I think, we need to wait maybe 1 year or 5 to see a really steadier income so we can quit our jobs.

Hmm there are actually quite a good no. of business models around for us to start making money at home and some of them do not really need a website actually. Nevertheless, one should never underestimate the promotional power of having website or blog, a marketing method not to be missed.

@Make Money Online: You’re right Ben, you really don’t need a website to make money online, but if the use of one, expedites your business and enables you to reach out to a bigger audience, having a website becomes a basic requirement for those wishing to work a little smart.

I also have an online business. At first, I thought it will not become successful as there were only few people who visited my site and bought my products. My market were teenagers as I’m selling some girly stuff for teens. So, I always identify their trend settings to catch up with the latest things they like. I agree with you that a good marketing strategy is very important for a home-based business.
Anyway, thanks for the tips and the info!

Valerie indeed a marketing strategy is the most important thing, even with blogs the content it is not more important than to socialize and do the marketing long before you ask for anything.

hi Peter,
It isn’t, but with a lot of hard work, it can pay the bills.
I do think the internet is amazing for all the opportunity it has created.
I had heard that 80% of new business fail within 3 to 5 years. I didn’t know that with online businesses it was up to 95%. Wow. Somehow I’m not surprised though. I’m guessing a lot of people think it’s the path to easy riches.

Another great post Peter. I’ve been running a poll on my Tracker Blog and out of 103 total voters 80% admitted to making no or very little money online. It’s disturbing but not surprising at all. I believe expectations are unreasonable for most newbie home businesses. New businesses would do well to read posts like this before making a decision.

Hi,
Why do i keep coming back to your blog? Well certainly because your great content, excellent strategies and a lot of good ideas. I would say many expects instant gratification and that’s one of the reasons also why many people fail. Bury your head down a little bit deeper and a little bit longer! It takes a while but it’s going to be worth it in the end.
Cheers,

I would say if you want an instant gratification you would most likely fail in this kind of business. Bury your head down a little bit deeper and longer. Make that extra mile to boost your enthusiasm. Learn the skills and learn from people and situations.
Another great post. keep it up!

The first 12 months of trying to brand yourself and make money online is the toughest, this is where 95% of people quit. After 12 months of building links and relationships things start to get easier, Google starts to rank you better which again makes things ALOT easier and people start to respect your opinions.

Hi Peter. As you know, I wrote an ebook on this very subject, though it’s geared more towards small businesses and not home businesses. But the concepts are pretty much the same; create a website, work on marketing that website, hopefully make money with that website, even if your business isn’t a web based business. Good stuff.

I think a common problem is that people start an online business as a secondary income (job) and end up not having the time to maintain it, or lose interest because it doesn’t become successful as quickly as they would like. There is plenty of information out there to help you along the way, but if you don’t have the time or drive to follow the steps to be successful then you won’t be. Many people can’t be successful in their primary job, much less a second one.
Good tips for those trying though!
January 15, 2009 at 9:31 am
@Mitch:Oh really, I didn’t know that. Hope you got lots of sale from it. Maybe one day if I get the chance, I’ll read it.

Work At Home Ideas and Opportunities
January 19, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Awesome post Peter – - And so very true!
Running a business from home is the future of business. Even multi national companies are starting to see the benefits of people working at home.
In fact, take it from me: There are only two types of businesses for the 21st century and beyond; Those online…And those that do not exist!
And every successful business on the internet has a website, or they would not be able to earn money. And affiliate marketing, where you send surfers direct to the merchant website is coming to an end.
The art of making money online is much simpler and much easier than most people believe. However, I am definitely not suggesting it is easy to make money.
Sound like a contradiction? Not really.
Most beginners fail at making money from a website because they lack the skills required to market their website AND market their products correctly.
They see no results so they “add another product”, or go looking for something else to promote, and that is why 95%+ fail in less than 2 years.
Owning a website is a must.
Without a website you have no business, you have no long term success and you will never get recurring income from happy customers.
In order to keep the flow of money coming in to your bank account you have to capture names. It is a fact. I am sure you have heard the “money is in the list” saying. So, how can you create a list without a website?
Impossible! Therefore, a website is a must.
So website owners who work from home must settle down and learn, nay “master” the 7 basic skills required to turn their websites in to traffic magnets.
Once you understand how that works you will guarantee targeted traffic to your website. And if you list build from your website, you will start to gain confidence and start to see results, in this case, making money.
So, making money can be simple – once you know how to attract people to your website. It is a skill that requires patients, belief, some hard work and 7 basic skills.
Thank you again for your post Peter.
You always come up with the goods and this article is the same. I am sure there will be much debate on all the different views with the concept of working from home and owning a website.
Wishing you, as always the very best of success.
Sincerely,
John

I agree it is not easy, but it is worth doing. A successful online business takes months even years to get noticed, before even making any money.
It is not an overnight success.

In today’s economic downturn, many people are looking into part-time home based businesses in order to supplement their incomes. Sometimes, these reliable home based businesses become so successful that their owners are able to quit their outside jobs and make their home-based business full-time.

If you feel you are a born teacher, why should you waste your gift on neighborhood kids? You can actually tutor a large number of students from around the globe. And for that you won’t need to shuttle between the continents; the internet allows you connect to hundreds of students eager to learn from you and willing to offer a rather impressive pay packet. No wonder online tutoring has emerged as one of the most lucrative free home business opportunity for those teachers, who dare to walk off the beaten path to make some extra cash and that is too from the privacy of their own homes.
