The Internet provides the perfect stage for businesses to communicate and connect with current and potential customers and clients. This is solidified by continuous advancements in technology, market trends, and consumer behavior. As a result of this heavy shift towards online advertising and marketing, search engine optimization has become undeniably important and necessary.
Not only is SEO a critical component of any well-rounded online marketing strategy, but it is far from static. In other words, SEO practices that were once considered optimal are no longer relevant. In some cases, these “old” tactics can actually do more harm than good, which is why it is imperative that you stay current with SEO trends and updates.
These days, one of the most important and powerful SEO tools at your disposal is link building. Keep in mind, however, that how you build these links matters much more than whether or not you even do it. The delivery method can make or break your search engine results rankings.
Link building is not a new SEO technique, but the way in which it is performed has changed significantly over time. Ultimately, the goal of link building is to obtain back links to your site from various online sources – directories, websites, blogs, social media platforms, etc. In the beginning, getting these back links was relatively easy, but times have changed. Google no longer cares about how many live links point back to your site. They care about the quality of those links, the quality of the web location, and the relationship between the two.
The fact that Google has become more regulatory of links on the Internet is actually good for businesses because it weeds out the spammers. Granted, link building is the type of SEO activity that requires a lot of attention and patience, but when done properly, the results are certainly worthwhile.
Just as with any other advertising method, link building cannot be mastered over night. It requires a significant amount of research, planning, and – a designated “link builder”. Due to the attention that link building requires, it is in your best interest to designate the responsibility to one, if not more, specific individuals, depending on the size of your business. Developing a successful link building strategy should consider the importance of each of the following factors:
- Blog – An onsite or off site blog is basically an essential component of any business domain. It provides a platform for new and reader-friendly content, which is what Google likes to see.
- Images – The pictures, images, and videos that you post online can add some serious power to your SEO strength. Quality, relevance, tagging, embedding, and descriptions should be utilized.
- Guest Posting – The key to a successful guest posting campaign is to identify quality websites and blogs that pertain to your niche, and provide them with quality content in order to obtain a backlink to your site.
- Content – Google continues to emphasize the importance of content in order to be successful with your SEO strategy. This means you must publish quality content on your own site and on others on a regular basis.
