Originating from a bookmark, a mere piece of paper that marks a page so you can find it easily again, a computer bookmark is a link on your computer that marks your selected web page to let you find that page easily.

The most fundamental benefit of a social bookmark is that it lets you share with others when you post this page to dozens of social bookmarking websites. These sites have really grown substantially to serve the needs of many work at home business owners and private individuals. Some of the most popular ones are del.icio.us, ma.glolia, StumbleUpon, Digg, Google Bookmarks, just to name a few. Many have indeed capitalized on this new found craze as a new online business opportunity not to be missed. And who says that the online business niche is getting too saturated?

When I started this post, I mentioned that social bookmarking if used correctly can be a very powerful platform for your work at home business. If I liked your web page and posted a bookmark to it at one of these sites, something magical would happen. First, other members of the bookmarking site could view this link. If they liked it, chances are they would follow the link. Then they could subscribe, view more pages, buy your product or whatever your site offers. They could also bookmark the link and a new chain begins. Think about this. Many people participate in several dozens of bookmarking sites. They might bookmark your page several times or even blog about it using your link. Of course this may be what’s in an ideal situation, but it doesn’t take away the fact that social bookmarking could be weaving that magic you’ve been waiting for. It doesn’t take away the power that it can unleash for you either. If you learned the correct technique and using it effectively, it could well be your next best home business idea.

Appease The Search Engines
Another benefit of using social bookmarking is that the search engines can see and recognize which sites are building up naturally created “votes” across what domains. In general websites that can attract numerous bookmarks have a better advantage over others that don’t. Many people may not be aware that Google has a social bookmarking site called “Google Bookmarks” so that explains why we should include our bookmarks here too. Another reason why we should do this is that Google has included social bookmarking in its personal search algorithm for some time now.

Harness The Power of Social Bookmarking
Ever since the birth of social bookmarking sites, people have been doing this manually. It’s cumbersome but it does work. Bloggers would place the little icons for Digg, ma.glolia, del.icio.us and others at the end of each post. By doing so, the blogger hopes that visitors reading the post will be prompted to bookmark the post provided he likes it.

With the increase of many social bookmarking sites, a few smart people started writing scripts to automate this process further. This made sites like socialmatic.com and onlywire.com possible and gave bloggers a new breath of fresh air.
