You dont need thousands of links. Throwing a few hundred article links at a site overnight and doing nothing else has caused sites of a friends to be dropped from the rankings. The "trick" is to make it look natural, build the links gradually and consistently. Dont just do 200 links one day and none for another month. #3 is definately wrong.
