A friend of mine, about to get married sent a joke to me entitled “Desperately seeking technical support” totaling 8 Issues. It talked about losing his bachelorhood, girlfriends issues, past relationships. I thought for a moment if they could relate to the challenges of our home internet business in which we always seek answers too. I decided to take up this challenge. Here is his joke (in blue) and my answers (in black)
8 Top Internet Marketing Tips For Your Home Internet Business
Internet MarketingTip #1- Get a Good Web Host

If you are running an Internet Marketing website and have recently changed to another hosting account like Hostgator from your existing account like Hos4Profit, the very first thing you will experience is that after setting up your site on HostGator, neither FireFox or Chrome worked on either of their editors and may just have to contend with using the much hated Internet Explorer. If you are still adamant about changing to Hostgator, you should keep both hosting accounts for the time being. Then when you are satisfied with the performance of Hostgator, then cancel Host4Profit. A note of caution, before shutting down Host4Profit make sure you have completed the files transfer to your new host or you will lose your online marketing website completely. That’s even worse than a system crash!
While the merits of changing hosts maybe justified, do remember to make relative comparisons and not just because one host charges $25 while another $7.95 per month. There is a “limit” to the number of domains a server can handle. Do you know that Host4Profit put no more than 250 accounts (full or multiple) on a server? HostGator I heard put thousands of accounts on a single server in order to off set the costs. Personally I think having thousands of clients on a single server may well lead to slower processing.
Internet Marketing Tip #2 – Choose Good Affiliate Programs

There are just too many affiliate programs out there that allow you to pick the most suitable one to promote. It is important to find one that is of good quality product, which ultimately pays good commission, with a good refund policy. Our recommendation is to choose affiliate programs which are relevant to each other so that the customer may eventually buy more than one product from you on your same website. Many new internet marketers make the mistake of choosing the wrong affiliate program or those that do not compliment one another. Another mistake that some bloggers make is they expect instant commission from affiliate programs to the extent of hopping from one affiliate program to another to find the best performance. You really need to first understand how the affiliate program works, the market conditions and demand for this product to have a good chance of making money from affiliate programs.
Internet Marketing Tip #3-Good Make Money Online Tip

Well after many months of not making money on the new affiliate product that I bought, I checked with my forum buddies as to what may be the reason for the poor sales conversion. After a few rounds of discussion, I eventually found what may be the cause of my problem. The issue was not the affiliate product but the way I promoted it. I had made the mistake of doing cold sale that is pushing too hard on this new product. As soon as I stopped all my aggressive online promotions, I had a sale.
Internet Marketing Tip #4-Avoid Too Good To Be True Schemes

I came across what sounded like a good affiliate program that requires me to pay only $1.00 upfront fee to join. Sounds really good I thought. After one month I had a shock when I realized that my credit card was billed $50.00 by this affiliate company. I found out that this was due to my not reading the fine prints when I joined the affiliate program. If I had, I would have realized that it’s $1.00 for a month long trial period and subsequent months the company will charge me $50.00 unless I opted out. After many exchanges of email with this affiliate company I got my money back. The lesson I learned: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. I then found one excellent free affiliate program called SFI Marketing Group and before long upgraded to Executive Affiliate status.
Internet Marketing Tip #5- Always Back-up Files

I found out about one good threaded comment plugin called Brian’s Threaded Comments Plugin. As threaded comments feature is good at attracting more comments on your blog, I installed it on my blog. Somehow during the installation process, something went completely wrong and that fateful night I made history by having hacked my own blog. Host4Profit recovered my blog within 4 hours, giving their top service something for me to rave about. Well naturally, once bitten and twice shy I had this plugin removed and subsequently found and installed Disquos which also had the threaded comment feature.
Internet Marketing Tip #6-User FireFox Internet Browser

Between Internet Explorer and Firefox, which do you prefer? For me and for most of my friends, it’s Firefox of course. From my experience I’ve found that internet Explorer does not welcome many changes that I make on my blog. For me particularly I’m constantly having problems with loading image files on my sidebar. They somehow break the sidebar too often. I’ve learned to reduce such changes to a minimum to avoid wasting time on fixing such problems in Internet Explorer.
Internet Marketing Tip #7-Google Adsense Alternative

A year ago I had my Google Adsense account suspended by Google just barely after 2 months. The brief reason given as ‘your account prove a risk to other users’ without offering a better explanation or suggesting what ways I should take to eradicate the risk to users, totally frustrated me till this day. Well just one month ago I found an alternative to Google Adsense. I joined as a free member but after one day when I learned that a paid member stands to earn more affiliate commission, I upgraded my CBadPro account to a paid account. That was a good decision as I’ve since had a few sales as well as paid affiliate members who have joined under me.
Internet Marketing Tip #8-Beware The Google Ban

I’ve always followed the Google Webmaster Guidelines all the time and applying only white hat SEO as apposed to Black Hat SEO. You definitely don’t want to get the Google Ban and lose page rank, Serps and everything that you’ve worked so hard for. You really don’t think you’ll get away with trying to game the system and trying to achieve results too fast too soon do you?

Love it, absolutely love it!!!!! You have done a great job “converting” the joke into some real good advice!
I have got a similar joke on my site, you should like that one, too: http://www.petra-weiss.com/installing-a-husband…
April 5, 2009 at 9:00 am
@Petra Weiss: Thanks…I saw your joke, it's funny and possibly written by the same author too. .well if I'm bored with this joke I know which blog to go to find something else to laugh out silly.
April 5, 2009 at 9:12 am
This is a very interesting Blogg. there is a lot of good information on internet marketing and some very useful information on Google.
However, the girlfriend software sounds like it needs to stay off the shelf. However, it does make for a very interesting blog and I'm glad you shared it with us.
Sincerely

@Charles: Thanks for dropping in and glad you like the joke. Hope it revitalize you somewhat to get some renewed energy for your business.

I think what is even worse than the Google Ban is the Google Dislike. At least you know when you are banned. If Google doesn't like your site, it won't crawl the site. I found this out the tough way. I created an 800 page site overnight. After looking at the traffic log, I could see the spiders did not like the site. They hardly come back to look for content.
April 5, 2009 at 12:15 pm
@ buzzyblogger: Hi Drew, sorry to hear that. It's so dreadful. Sorry that you had to experience the hard way. I hope you get out of the Google Sandbox real soon.
April 5, 2009 at 1:01 pm
I ended up just creating more websites and letting that site go. I now build my sites more slowly with more organic content.
April 5, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Lol relating marriage to home business, thats really out of the box peter. But yeah, I do support the usage of Firefox..
April 5, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Hi Peter,
You're giving a very good advice through this funny joke and they are absolutely right. I also like to use Firefox than Internet explore. I have to spend more time to fix internet explore while Firefox is working fine.
Thanks
Kha

Haha… thanks for the laugh, Peter. Don't you just hate technical issues?! I'm currently running Fiance 1.0 and already have compatibility issues with MotherInLaw 1.0! Any ideas?… LOL.
Great marketing tips as always
Alan

Hi Lee, I'm visiting again here and i'm reading that you ever have suspended account by Google Adsense. What i want to ask is Google suspended your account before or after you cashout your payment ?
Best regards,
Zaldy
April 5, 2009 at 7:25 pm
@ Work From Home Opportunities Well Alan, if you don't do regular maintenance you may end up in a worse secenario – a system crash. Besides weekly system maintenance I recommend that you use the 'sound off' and 'minimize me' feaure on your 'mother-in-law1.0 program. It works on other clients I've helped.LOL
April 5, 2009 at 7:39 pm
@ DeViLnoAnGeL InFo: It was just 1-2 months and my blog then was new so there was little money made on my Googel adsense account then. Anyway I read from others that they could not take out the money. One even resorted to suing Google to get the money and got it. Thanks for dropping by.
April 5, 2009 at 7:45 pm
@ Computer Work At Home: Well I guess since we worked so hard for our business we need a good laugh every once in a while. Thanks for dropping by.
April 5, 2009 at 7:47 pm
@Ben Pei: So do you have any problems with your 'mother-in-law1.0' program like Alan? Or it is running in perfect condition. LOL
April 5, 2009 at 7:54 pm
I usually resort to the built-in 'ignore feature' which works quite well and very similar to the 'sound off' feature. The 'minimize me' feature reminds me of the shrink ray on the Honey I Shrunk the Kids movie. Now that would be awesome!
LOL.
April 5, 2009 at 10:35 pm
For a minute there, when I saw this in my reader, I thought someone had hijacked your post; whew! Interesting way you blended these things together. I think number four is probably the most important thing to new people, because there are so many things out there that can trip people up.
April 6, 2009 at 1:57 am
wow that's really new fresh blog. It really awful that they are suspended your blog without giving any proper explanation. I guess maybe they suspended your blog because it content about SEO so maybe they think your blog are a threat to them. It really sucks Lee, feel sorry for your bad relation with Google.
April 6, 2009 at 3:03 am
HI Peter,
That was funny, this I guess it could be upgraded to Wife1.0, lol
Shhhhh, dont tell my wife I said that, lol
April 6, 2009 at 3:04 am

April 6, 2009 at 5:36 am

April 6, 2009 at 7:56 am
Hi Peter -
The 'If it looks too good to be true' tip resonates with me. Sadly I have learned that that is fact.
Off topic, but:
Have you seen the ‘review' of your site on Tuscson SEO Solutions? (day 74)

April 7, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Alright, the post has some great info – sorry about your google adsense experience, but the joke was a riot. I'm about to forward this make some peoples' day.
April 7, 2009 at 4:41 pm
I think it's also important to make your website fully compatible with common web browsers such as Firefox, Internet Explorer, Chrome, Safari…etc. Even though a lot of people use Firefox, there are still a large portion of people who use Internet Explorer and Safari, which are the default web browsers in Windows and Mac OSX operating systems. And you don't want to lose your market potential to these users. My two cents.
April 8, 2009 at 1:40 am
WOW! It is fantastic tips and i reccommend everybody to read this post though it is somewhat long post but very interesting to learn new things, thanks for the nice info!

@ Medical Billing Trainer : Thanks for dropping by. I figured everybody likes a good joke so that gave something to think about. Don't DIGG as my account got suspended for something I'm not sure of as nobody from Digg told me anything…such things always happens to me, I wonder why?
April 8, 2009 at 12:10 pm
@ DSFlyfishing: Thanks for your comment. Glad you like it and I appreciate your sending to any of your friends to have a good laugh too. I'm sure they'll like it too.
April 8, 2009 at 12:13 pm
@ Business Minder: You're right and it's something I'm still trying to do – reduce whatever errors that appears on Internet Explorer for this blog. Thanks for adding to the conversation and keep in touch.
April 8, 2009 at 12:14 pm
@ web development : You've made my day with your delight. Thanks! Keep in touch.
April 8, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Hi Peter,
I installed the plugin but it seems I cannot get the backup be email, its about 43+ MB too huge to get it by email. How come you have a smaller size of backup file? Maybe I got to many images, dont know.
April 8, 2009 at 7:40 pm
@ Marketing Business Review : I would think I have more images on my blog compared to yours so I don't think this is the issue. Let me try to get the settings page and give it to you…over the weekend. See if that helps.
April 8, 2009 at 7:49 pm
This is good advice. Thank you for the post.
April 8, 2009 at 8:10 pm
@Meaghan: Thanks for your comment. Good to see you again.
April 9, 2009 at 5:47 am
Hi Peter,
I got a question regarding your photos you choose on your blog. I've noticed you've used the Golden Gate Bridge many times is this a place you'd like to visit?
I've walked the Golden Gate Bridge and it is an awesome sight.
April 9, 2009 at 5:50 am
Hi Peter,
I am looking at using Hostgator for Multimedia files, how would rate their aftersales support?
April 9, 2009 at 9:13 am
@ atmmultimedia: James you do have an eye for such details that's why you are who you are a web designer. Yes I've been using different Golden Gate Bridge photos for quite a no. of my posts. I've always been fascinated by this bridge but never got the chance like you to walk it. Oh you shouldn't have told me that…now I'm even more envious. LOL!
April 9, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Hi Peter,
Thanks for the info on Hostgator, sure I'll use ur link.
The Golden Gate Bridge I walked in 2005, awesome bridge, I am sure you'll visit it one day. Visit the Alcatraz while your there. When I was in San Francsico I saw Carlos Santana driving in his jeep.
April 9, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Yea backup is not stressed enough and if your not using Firefox your not getting the best browser experience.
April 11, 2009 at 6:17 pm
You're kidding! Please write a post about this and get some feed back because I am sure that what Digg did to you has been done to others. I would also like to understand why Digg would not give a definitive answer as to why they felt the need to suspend an account.
April 13, 2009 at 6:50 am
LOL working perfectly fine.. Firewall on and anti virus always up to date.
April 15, 2009 at 5:54 am
