Most work at home enthusiasts and Internet Home Business entrepreneurs start out with a level of excitement and expectation akin to that of gushing newlyweds.
Riding high on the passion of the moment and with stars in their eyes, many home business wannabes see only the veneer of hype and promise. They are blinded to the possibility that, below the surface, the love of their life, their chosen online marketing opportunity, might have a few flaws. Beauty is, after all, only skin deep.
The sad reality is that the true characteristics of the beast will eventually rise to the surface, whether the “beast” is a marriage partner, a business partner or a new home business activity taken on by an inexperienced newbie.
It is the rare Internet Marketer who immediately finds their niche. In most cases, it takes time, experience and trial and error for a marketer to find the right mix of business opportunity and marketing techniques to make their efforts satisfying and successful.
So, what is a work at home enthusiast to do when realization finally hits home that the honeymoon is over, that their initial attempts are not producing the desired results?
Well, the good news is, that’s all part of the process. Successful Internet home businesses do go through progressive stages of development, each stage building on the previous and each one a necessary step leading to the next.
The honeymoon stage is the learning phase where the newbie learns what Internet Marketing is and how to find and promote products, programs or services on the Internet.
Often overwhelmed by information overload, the newcomer does well to simply set up a basic website offering affiliate products or programs, or other products supplied by online wholesalers or brokers and made available for resale by countless numbers of aspiring marketers.
Next comes the development stage where the new marketer begins to apply advanced marketing techniques. These might include improved website and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) practices, blogging, article marketing and authority linking strategies as well as other techniques to develop a professional presence online as a recognized and preferred source for certain products or services.
Experience breeds confidence and with that, the desire to generate more income, faster. This leads the marketer to the next stage which might include either a strong focus on a specific niche market, or the development of unique products sold exclusively by that marketer or made available to others for their marketing efforts.
Next is the marketing leadership stage: becoming a trainer, coach, mentor, consultant; or developing a full-fledged affiliate program to attract other marketers; or a service like a professional marketing forum, an advertising brokerage or an online training program with instructors and training materials and resources.
The final stage before retirement is to become a marketing celebrity with book deals, talk show appearances and … okay, we are dreaming here.
But seriously, all achievement begins with dreams and desire. Respond to that desire: make a commitment, go on a marketing honeymoon, then settle down and plan the stages of your work at home Internet Marketing career.

When looking for an affiliate marketing opportunity take some time to think carefully about yourself. There are always new things coming up in every niche, and if you’re the type of person that likes to test and introduce the latest thing then this type of affiliate marketing opportunity will suit you.

You have one excellent article here Peter.
I can clearly link with the first and 2nd stage of the honeymoon!
And it’s so true that finding a niche can be difficult. Not many of us have hobbies that we are passionate enough and have expertise in to translate into a business.
But actually, I think for most the initial stage will always be ongoing. There is so much to learn everyday it is a challenge to keep up.
Keep the nice articles coming Peter!

Man, I love this new theme Peter, what a great choice. It has a very professional look about it.
With home business I suppose like any other business it’s all about time management. Do that properly and the rest becomes a bit easier.

Hi Sire,
Yep! I simply love it too. I’m still making a few changes as we speak but glad to get the better part of it completed.

So, how did you resolve the permissions problem? It may need to know if it ever arises if I change my theme.

Sire,
In fact you guessed it correctly. I just went to my hosting webpanel and changed the permission rights to the folder/file. If you noticed each folder/file has a 3 digit number that determines read, write, execute. I just changed to ’777′. Something so simple and so important to know for me now.

Sometimes the solution is so obvious that we tend to miss it. I know I have kicked myself on so many occasions for taking so long to solve simple problems. It’s what makes life interesting.

Great post there. Comparing internet marketing to a marriage is simply ingenious. The similarities are so real!
I think any one just starting out online would learn a lot from this post.

Hi Chadrack,
Yes it seems that everyone has to go through this stage isn’t it, making a big decision…going into the unknown, hoping to find a better life….yes you’re right its a close comparison to marriage.

Hi Peter,
This post speaks a few home truths. If I could give any advice to a newbie it is don’t do what I did. I reduced my working hours to concentrate on my internet business, thinking that I would be earning income in 6 months. It was not that easy. Newbies should stick to their full time job, (unless money is not an issue,) and give themselves time to digest the information overload they are going to get.
I know it be would tough working full time and building a business but earning that income in your job takes the financial stress off during the early stages.

Dave, what you say makes a hell of a lot sense. Lucky for me I am currently taking that advice.
November 13, 2008 at 3:26 am
Dave/Sire: How true this is. Why do you think I’m still working full time and burning the midnite oil to do this business. Also I just had one of my business partners totally giviing it up and returning back to the workforce. It’s a lesson learned from their mistakes.

Good post. Totally agree. I believe internet marketing require dedicated consistent action. It’s this “never give-up” mentality that brings you great success at the end.

I’ve been at this for the longest time and I’m way past the honeymoon stage.. Am I doing well? Not so much as I imagined. Did I give up – almost. Hehe. Thanks for this article though. I totally agree.

I remember when I first got started online, I was very excited, but it wore off after about 2 months when I really wasn't making money. But now I am back to being excited again, granted it is two years later but now I'm making money.

both your partner and internet marketing needs attention, so it's up to you how to organize the time.
September 8, 2009 at 10:39 am
You have just pretty much described every feeling I have gone through over the past few months, the sheer excitement and enthusiasm at the start which turns into overwhelmingness at times at the sheer size of online.
You are right, you have to persevere and keep pushing, even though the doors are usually going the opposite way to you, there are odd places (like here) that you find a friendly and understanding smile.

This article puts the stages we go through when starting with Internet Marketing in a nutshell. For some it might take longer, others might find it easier, depending on their previous experience. The longest and hardest part of it is definitely the “learning the ropes” in between the honeymoon period and the teaching part.
October 1, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Now I am back to being excited again, granted it is two years later but now I'm making money.
October 7, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Hi GT, you have very rightly pointed out that – all achievement begins with dreams and desire – in fact no body can succeed without dreams and desire for success. The three stages you have mentioned efficiently describes the stages in the life of an Internet marketer. Thanks for sharing your insights. I'm going to visit your blog – hope it has some goodies in store!
October 7, 2009 at 10:10 pm
@ Peter Lee – I'm a regular visitor to your wonderful blog. You have offered to accept guest posts – thanks for the offer I'm going to write a post in a week or two. Thanks for the opportunity! Hope it works out well and delivers some valuable traffic to my site.
October 7, 2009 at 10:20 pm
@ Cathy – Hi Cathy, you are definitely improving – your comment here proves it. Keep up the hard work and have confidence. You see no work is easy and you would find many who starts but a few who tastes success – these are the ones who kept their patience and put in the hard work necessary – they asked themselves “How can I improve?” or “How can I earn money?” instead of “Can I ever succeed?” or “Can I make money?”. To lose does not have any credit and anybody can lose but SUCCESS is definitely creditable and only a few succeeds. Don't ever think of giving up – there are many goodies waiting for you down the road – Keep up!

Thanks for this article, Peter. I like the honesty and common sense in it. I have previously made some money from the internet and I have been trying for several month to do so again. Affiliate sales are very difficult at the outset.
My own mindset is that I am learning a new trade and that it will take time to do so. There are many links in the process and several skills that I need to master. I am working through these methodically and, hopefully, I will build a good online business over time.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,

I loved the article on the honeymoon. One affiliate website I visited where the author was giving testimonials along with income potential, after each testimonial the author gave the standard disclaimer about these results not being typical, then would put something like “because he got up off his butt and worked for it,” or “because he shut the tv off and went to work.” It is a journey, not an event. Great article!!
