Everyone knows just how important blog commenting can be in getting you backlinks, establishing your name in your blogging community and hopefully getting the number 1 spot in SERP. But have you actually counted how many backlinks you can get from blog commenting alone?
If you’ve read my recent post ‘The Easiest Way To Get Backlinks Starts Here‘ I described some of these obvious benefits to blog commenting but I also included an important revelation:
Well someone I know who does blog commenting at blogs with ‘Top Commentator’s List for just 2 months gets him over 10,000 inlinks??? How? It’s simple ….the Top Commentator links are sitewide (because it’s in the sidebar) and it counts every single page as an inlink. So if you make top commentator on a site with 300 pages, it counts as 300 inlinks.
While I don’t disagree with how Blog Commenting can help you amass a substantial amount of backlinks, how successful you are at it is also determined by what comment strategy you used or how addicted diligent you are in making this effort a routine work before anything else, just to name a couple. I decided to start a little experiment to find out how many backlinks I can obtain for Work From Home Business Blog over 5 days of blog commenting.
Blog Comment Strategy I used:
Special Focus For this Experiment:
- Comment on blogs which have do-follow and Top Commentator List. The easiest way to find the DoFollow blogs is through the use of a search engine called DoFollo.com. Here you can search for DoFollow blogs in your niche by using relevant keywords. For this experiment I used my do-dollow blogs list in ‘The Easiest Way To Get Backlinks Starts Here‘ to find my blogs to comment.
- Focus on PR3 blogs. This is my short term focus as I reckon over 5 days it’s easier to get more backlinks from PR3 blogs than say PR4-PR6. I will change my focus once my experiment ends.
- Contribute only quality comments. If you think you don’t have anything good to add to the conversation, DON’T Comment. Move on to another blog.
- DON’T spam!
- Start with 5 PR3 Blogs on the first day and post comments until you can find yourself in the Top Commentators List (you may have to manual count for blogs which moderate comments).
- On subsequent days go to these 5 blogs and add more comments to maintain or increase your lead over other bloggers. Always aim for the No. 1 spot in the Top Commentators List. If this is not possible, be in this list at least. Comment on 1-2 new blogs and repeat comment strategy.
At all Times:
- When you received a comment give a comment back by visiting
the blog. To let everyone know you are dead serious about this, display an icon that says U Comment-I Comment Back
- Reward your Top Commentators each month so as to give recognition as well as attract more people to comment on your blog. Write a Readers Appreciation post monthly as a show of appreciation.
After 5 days of blog commenting using this strategy you will find that you are Top Commentator for about 10-15 blogs.
Here are my Results:
B. Score Summary
Date of Report: Oct 17, 2008 (full report)
B. Score Summary

| del.icio.us Bookmarks | 0 |
Results Analysis:Blog Comment Experiment from Oct 17 - Oct 22
My total backlinks (Inbound Links) increased by 1259 and in fact my Traffic Rank, Google Indexed Pages and Blog Rank have also improved too. It is worth mentioning also that during this experiment, no other linking methods were used e.g. social bookmarking, article marketing, directory submission.
This simple experiment goes to show how effective blog commenting can be in generating you lots of backlinks provided you become Top Commentator at high quality blogs and follow a good comment strategy. My experiment is…well an experiment after all. If you have found other more successful ways to go about getting better results, I really like to hear them. Feel free to tell us your blog commenting ways in getting your backlinks.

Peter, I’d love to know how you quantify the number of backlinks you have. Are you using the Google link: feature or something else?
Mitch (Who am I?)

First, I can’t believe I’m the first one to comment on this post. Second, nice experiment, Peter. I don’t know that I’d have taken the time to actually track that down, but I do know that I’ve finally broken into the top 200,000 ranked blogs on Technorati; I’ll have to see what Website Grader says about me now. A quick question, though; how many blogs did you have to go through to find one that had both dofollow and top commenter? Also, nice find on the dofollo.com.

@Christopher Ross: Hi Chris, Thanks for dropping by. I used
WebsiteGrader.com before the start and end of experiment to find out my ‘inbound links’ the report gives me. Hey check it up to find out yours here.
@Mitch: Sorry Mitch you ain’t the first ‘cos Chris beat you to this. No trouble finding blogs with both dofollow and Top Commentators. In this experiment I had used my post The Easiest Way To Get Backlinks Starts Here in which all blog have both. The dofollow search engine I mentioned allows better searches on blogs at specific niche but may or may not have Top Commentator List.

I wonder how Chris beat me there, since there was nothing showing when I posted; sneaky!
I just ran my blog on Website Grader, which I actually wrote about back in June, and I’m now ranked 94, when I was 84 then. I’ve shown nice growth since then; that’s not bad, eh?

@Mitch: No, you didn’t see Chris cos his comment was yet to be moderated as I was ‘hmmm…off to slumberland. Hey 94 is a good grade..I like to think so since mine’s 94 too. Perhaps we can check each others’ rank in 3 months time and compare our rank again.

We’ll do that, as I may be at post #300 by then, which means I’ll be giving kind of an update of things anyway.

Lucky for me I am using the same strategies that you are Peter. I just ran the same report and I received a grade of 94 with over 6000 inbound links. I reckon I will save the report for future reference.
@ Mitch, I reckon you are just slowing down in your old age mate. Your taking too long to write your comments.

Peter - was it me that you were referring to when you said “Well someone I know who does blog commenting at blogs with ‘Top Commentator’s List…” because those were the stats that I posted and I faintly remember talking to you about how they are sitewide and stuff?
Congrats though, glad to see it is paying off - wait a month and build a few more links and you will see a great increase in SERPS

@Sire: Wow 6000 links…how long did you take to get so many links. I’m just half of that. Yes I think it’s a good idea to keep your report for future reference. 5 days is a good feel but a longer period like 2 months may be more conclusive to see if your comment strategy is near perfect.
@Simon from Otooo: Hey Simon, YES! YES!! you are the one who said that statement that provoked me…that excited me…that challenged me. Hey that’s a pretty powerful statement. Care to make another? But I got a question for you though. When you said “…Commentator links are sitewide (because it’s in the sidebar) and it counts every single page as an inlink…” is this statement good only if the blogger installs with the setting to show the Top Commentator List on ALL pages? Most of the blogs I visit only show it on their homepage.
@Norhafidz: Hi Norhafidz, yes please try it and it will be interesting to see your results. Feel free to modify it too to get even better results. Good Luck!

Peter, wassupblog is fairly new, I think the first post was in early August of this year, so I am quite surprised at the results. Even though I have more inbound links you have almost double the pages indexed by Google.

Haha, no probs
I also got a grade of 94 but I have like 19,000 inlinks now
The links are sitewide if the blogger chooses it to be when they install it - at the time of making that statement, most of the blogs I knew with the top commentators widget installed were sitewide with the exception of only one or two - I still believe most are sitewide.
As for another statement, I will try to think of one tonight when I’m going to sleep, as I’m heading off to bed right now

Hey Simon,
How long did you take to get 19,000 backlinks. I know we are getting these links very legitimately but what’s your take on Google’s stand on this i.e. too many links within a short time.
Peter
Simon from Otooo (Who am I?)

the 19,000 backlinks has come over about 2 and a half months
My take on Google’s stand on this is that it is actually working well - I have seen great improvements in the SERPS since getting these links and began getting consistent SE traffic, so in my opinion, it seems to be fine
Peter Lee (Who am I?)

Simon,
I was trying to be subtle. What I was trying to ask you is that if you got 19,000 backlinks over 2.5 months, you are going to hit 100,000 backlinks in a year. Would Google deem it as spam although we know it’s obtained legitimately and through hard work.

Hi Peter, fantastic post.
Is there an easy way to find blogs that have top commenters list? How many comments per blog do you usually have to do to enter that list? And finally, how do those lists work, meaning are they accumulative over time or do they reset each week or month?
I’m new to this type of blogging and am pretty unfamiliar with “top commenter lists”
Thanks in advance for your help. I know you’ll answer because you seem like you answer each and every blog comment. I think that’s really important and we really appreciate your time and effort to help us all out, Peter. Thanks!

Hi Pat,
Welcome to my blog and community. To find blogs that have top commentators just Google it with ‘finding blogs with top commentators plugin’ or something close and you’ll get quite a number of similar posts. However their lists may not be dofollow in which case you’ll have to check yourself. There’s a plugin from Firefox that helps you do this. Most Top commentators’ list are set to reset after one month(it depends on owners’ choice during the plugin installation). There are a few blogs I’ve seen showing the numbers continuously.
Hope to see you around here again.

Seeing your name on most, if not all, of the blogs I visited, I knew one fine day, you will be have more backlinks that you could have ever imagined. In fact, I can see that you already have more comments here at Peterville than you had before.
I can’t stress anymore the real benefit of blog commenting. It’s proven to work. Period. If anyone is still asking why no one is commenting on his/her blog, I’d make damn sure to set you as a good example.
By the way, website grader is only counting Yahoo backlinks of which the no. could be much smaller in Google. Try to count how many backlinks you have on Google from link:yourdomain.com.
