Do you think you can succeed in your Legitimate Home Internet Business without ever learning SEO specifically link building?
You probably know by now that one of the most effective ways to improve your site’s ranking is by building and increasing quality backlinks into your work at home business site. Many people still struggle with this process, especially if you are a new internet marketer. Even for the more experienced marketer new to SEO, it can be quite a daunting task learning the complexities of what sites you should be targeting and grappling with things like if too many outbound links can hurt you and your legitimate home internet business. They may also have not fully understood that both authority and relevance go hand in hand in good search engine optimization too.
Many SEO consultants firmly believed that backlinks account for about 80% of a page’s placement in the search engines, with the other 20% coming from your website format and other onsite optimization work. So clearly, if you want a particular page to get higher traffic when people type any of your internet home business keywords into Google and other search engines, you really need backlinks, lots of them.
Today we are faced with so many link opportunities it can be quite daunting, and it always raises the question: “Where do I begin?”. But what links matter, and what links don’t?. How does one find a “good” link from such a massive number of potential link sources to search from?. I figured it will be too much to discuss every aspect of these link sources in one post, so I will focus only on [tag-tec]Authority Sites[/tag-tec] in this post.

What’s An Authority Site
Essentially, an authority site is one that has a large number of inbound links from other well-linked sites. These sites have been in business for some time and usually have high page ranks accorded to them. The quality of its inbound link structure determines its authority and upon linking to other sites, passes on its votes and popularity as well to them. Simply put, obtaining links from [tag-tec]authority sites[/tag-tec] is vitally important to you if you wish to improve your search engine ranking. Linking to an authority site also helps you maintain and improve your general online creditability.
Technorati
When looking for authority sites, Technorati comes up a top favorite for me. Due to its massive traffic and established reputation it has, Technorati offers you the most updated and most relevant results in its search functions. You can use its advanced option, type in your work at home business keywords in the ‘Blog Directory Search’ box and just put ‘high authority’ as sort option. This gives you quite an awesome list of blogs with very high authority and other information like the number of inbound links to each of the related tags. You can then select the relevant sites which have the most inbound links to include in your link building work.
Wikipedia
Since 2001 when it first existed, Wikipedia has been getting lots of attention and because of its high rankings, it may benefit your link building journey to search here for authority links. Check out the External Links list found at the bottom of most pages for the list of sites they recommend.
.edu and .gov Websites
With only a little effort required I’ve found an easy way to search these sites by using Google search which shows you the blogs you are looking for:
Search for .edu domains with a blog relative to your website’s keywords:
site:.edu inurl:blog “your keyword(s)”
Search for .gov domains with a blog relative to your website keywords:
site:.gov inurl:blog “your keyword(s)”
Enter your relative keywords where the phrase keyword “your keyword(s)” appears and you will get numerous blogs listed with those .edu extensions. Similarly, if you substitute .gov for the .edu and you will find the sites with .gov extensions.
Still Not Convinced About .edu and .gov Are Quality Links?

Start Your Link Building Today
The pyramid on this page shows one simple method you can visualize and think about link building as steps from easiest and lowest cost, to the most difficult and highest cost.
Start focusing on the authority sites first remembering the premise that getting 100 high quality links is far better than getting 1000 weaker links. As the pyramid shows, the bulk of links the average marketer gets come from link sources which are of less value but easier to obtain. Therefore by focusing on getting these high authority links will go a long way in building a strong link building foundation for your legitimate home internet business.

That’s wonderful. I congratulate you on this remarkable achievement. I’m so glad you were able to grasp what’s important enough to help your ranking so fast. Of course your newly SEO’d site by Suzanne helped too.Remember what you’ve learned. When it works you “wash, rinse and repeat” the process. You’re off to a flying start but remember to focus on what is the right thing to do for SEO. I’m missing a piece, and if I’m missing it then someone else is probably missing it also but doesn’t want to ask. By getting authority links, are you saying to add links to these sites on your own site in some fashion, or to try to get these folks to link to you?
September 24, 2008 at 11:03 am
Mitch,
Inbound links i.e. links pointing to your site are more valuable. Even more so if they’re coming from an authority site like .edu, .gov although it’s pretty hard to find them. If I may compare to what some people refer to as controversial, link buying. People buy links from sites that are of high PR like PR6 onwards so these links pointing to you are supposedly excellent for your SEO.

Hi Peter. I do some SEO work myself, but the one thing I’ve not done all that well is link building. I pretty much knew you were going to answer my question that way, but the other side of the question is how you get those inbound links. For instance, are you writing these folks asking for those links, or looking for blogs and articles you can comment on so you can get those links, or something else? I guess that’s the true strategy question I’m asking; we all know those are important, but what are the best methods for getting them?
September 24, 2008 at 11:41 am
Mitch,
There are just too many ways I guess, but I focus more on blog commenting but you’ve nailed the right answer. You said “strategy”. I think it’s good to have a link building or blog commenting strategy. An example I can share with you is go to Google and look up the top 5-10 sites with your keyword you’re ranking. Check from Google who links to them, then visit these sites and do blog commenting only on the top quality ones e.g. high PR. That would be an example of a reasonable good strategy. What do you think?

May 18, 2009 at 10:58 am
@Sunny Gill: I have yet to see a ready made list of authority sites. As you know .edu and .gov are not as hot as before as Google has said so too that no special treatment will be accorded to these sites. For a more simplistic way of finding your quality sites is to look for very high PR sites like PR5. You can look for my Do Follow blogs on my navigation bar I have a full list of blogs by PR rank. Also look at this post:

really good information regarding link building. i like your article you made some key points for link building strategies .thanks for sharing…
December 7, 2009 at 6:03 am
Yes, the authority sites are the only worth linking. At WarriorForum there has been lots of talking about, whether the linking page should be related or not. Some people say, there is no difference, the only thing that matters is the PR of the linking site. This may be true concerning the search engine ranking, but this does not bring any related traffic to the site.

Chandan, these are all very established blogs so try to put very good quality comments or give your best views and arguments on the topic of discussion. There are no special techniques to get their links just make sure they are dofollow..

If some of these authority sites accept guest posts, you can try submitting a quality article which includes a backlink to your site to their editorial team. If it is approved you will not only have a backlink but you will also gain readership from the authority site's many visitors.

Hi Peter
great tips. I tried the search string for edu blogs and it came up with quite a few. I'm gathering I have to make a comment on these blogs to get the edu backlink. Even though I will make a relevent comment so it lessens the chance of it getting deleted, would you say it is better to just use my name as the anchor text for my url or would it be ok to use my website name, so I get the backlink for the keyword? What do you think?
August 23, 2010 at 7:49 am
@fix my credit: Yes you have to put your comment. it depends on the blog owner whether he accepts just the person's name or he allows a keyword text. If you're not sure just look at how others have been commenting on that post.
BTW, you can get 10 free .edu links just above this comment. Look for “FREE .edu links…..”
