Does Article Marketing Really Help With SEO?

Going along with the recent post of Peter, Article marketing is probably one of the most discussed topics in my forum with people asking me daily whether or not it really helps with SEO.. People are divided between 3 categories when it comes to talk about article marketing on internet:

  1. People who love article marketing.
  2. People who hate article marketing.
  3. People who don’t know about article marketing.

This article is for the people in the 3rd group, namely the ones who have no experience with article marketing and are wondering what its worth.

What is Article Marketing?

Article marketing is an online strategy that consist of you writing a quality article (in theory), and making it available for other people to use and republish on their site. Of course, since all labors require compensation, you’ll be rewarded for your generosity with a one way backlink towards your site, as well as a short biography of yourself. Here are the traditional steps taken:

  1. Write an article.
  2. Submit it to an Article Directory.
  3. Wait for your article to be reviewed and approved.
  4. Once your article is approved, it will be made available to visitors of the Article Directory.
  5. People download your article.
  6. People publish your article on their site.
  7. You get visitors and backlinks from all the sites that re-published your article.

Your personal involvement pretty much stops at step #2, after that you can just sit back and relax, everything else is automated and doesn’t require your participation. Depending of the article directory you submit your piece to, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few months to get your article reviewed and approved. Also, keep in mind that all articles submitted are not automatically approved, so take the time to write properly.

Why You Should Love Article Marketing?

When it comes to SEO, article marketing offers an incredible feature, and that’s to build a potentially unlimited and constant flow of one way backlinks towards your site. The leverage on article marketing is huge as one person only needs to write an article once, submit it to a specialized directory where more and more people will then re-publish it giving you more and more one way backlinks without you having anything to do for it. Each of the articles have submitted in the past is being reused 300 times in average at least. That means for each article I wrote, I got over 300 one way backlinks. Another interesting aspect of those links from a SEO stand is the fact that they come from diverse domains, which is a great thing, and that they don’t appear all at once, but rather over time as all the people don’t publish your article at the same time. It’s a onetime effort, and a lifetime one way link building machine.

Why You Should Hate Article Marketing?

There’s a sound difference between theory and reality. Most of the articles in those article directories are of very low quality and some really limit spam junk. This having for resulting effect that you are very unlikely to ever get your article noticed further than the article directory itself. If spending so much effort for that, you are better of publishing on your own site instead. Even if your article get picked up, more often than not, it will be by automated scrapping software, and your article will be published on a rubbish site where no one will see it. Not only no one will see your article and you won’t get traffic from it, the pages where your article will be published are most likely to be in the supplementary index, if indexed at all. In SEO term, this means that the backlinks you get from there are worthless. At worst, you’ll get dishonest publisher who won’t give you credit at all, and steal your work to make it theirs. Article marketing ends up being a huge waste of your time, resources and talent. If you want quality backlinks, there are many other ways to do so.

In Conclusion

The truth is that no one side is more right than the other. I personally like article marketing as it helps in many other ways beyond SEO, such as branding to me. I’ve got thousands of visitors coming from those republished articles to my site, and in some instances was even lucky enough to get my articles in pages on the primary index and get people commenting on them, building valuable SEO backlinks and reputation for myself. On the other hand, I’ve also experienced people trying to steal my content, and honestly, majority of the backlinks I’ve got don’t bring any or much link juice. If you really plan to get a high PageRank, I don’t feel that article marketing is the way to go for you. On the other hand, if you plan to increase your exposure, or do increased of deep linking on your site, I would strongly recommend you to include Article Marketing as part of your SEO campaign.

Interesting post. I have started a few niche sites lately and one fo them, which I started a month before the latest PR update went straight to a PR3. Almost exclusively from article marketing. No paid services, just manual submissions of about 50 articles to 5 or 6 sites.

The articles were OK but nothing great. Each one takes about 10 minutes to write. Another 2 sites jumped straight to PR2 with similar techniques although not quite as intense. Along with hubs and things like infobarrel and of course a few good quality in post one way backlinks it is surprising what you can achieve.

If you have no other way to get backlinks then I would suggest to anyone getting started that they should use article marketing to its full potential.

I hope this inspires some new people who are interested in making money online.

p.s Peter your site is up the creek. All your sidebar is below this post as I am typing. Keep up the good work dude. You have me a lot along the way.
  • @Dave. You must be using IE as I always have this problem with IE. Try using FF as there isn't any problem when you used that.
  • Hi Peter, just noticed the same problem mentioned above occuring in Opera... it was fine the other day I'm sure!
  • Hi Dave,

Like I said some people just love article marketing, I guess I'm also one of them, I have personally found that it is one of the fastest way to build a huge amount of backlinks in an ethical way as their growth is natural.

Sure most of them are useless in all the ways you can imagine, but when it comes the few (or many) that are goods, it's just all so worth it!
  • Hi Nicolas, how do you feel about using article distribution software? I'm personally a big fan of it but I would like to hear your point of view.

    /Mikael
  • Hi Mikael,

I'm moderately a fan of it personally. I like them because they make submission much easier, and sometime with autosubmission option really can be a time saver.

Now, on the other hand, the articles are hardly ever submitted in the appropriate category and it can be quite troublesome to correct this. And unless your articles are really submitted in the proper category, you face the risk of not being approved or having very few download of your article.

Nonetheless, they are definitely useful to some extend.
  • It may be because of you internet browser. Try FireFox or Safari. These are more advance than Internet Explorer.
  • It's not so much a matter of being more advanced, it's just that they interprete code and certain tags differently. This is why cross-browser compatibility is always a good thing to take into consideration when developping a site.
  • Dave, thanks for sharing your practical experience as it will inspire me to take up article marketing more vigorously.
  • good article ,

    thanks for info .
  • Hmm, very interesting indeed.

It seems to me that with article marketing its trying to figure out if the time spent writing and publishing the articles is worth the results.

I'm a pretty slow writer myself, so it seems as though the effort it would take to get articles written and published might not be worth the small amounts of traffic it might bring.

I wonder if the topic makes a difference too? I was reading the other day about what subjects are most popular on sites like Digg and wonder if anyone knows what's the best topics on article sites?
  • What you have to realize here, is the fact that you only need to write and submit your article once, after that, it will keep working for you for the rest of your life!

So even if you need 2 hours to write one article, why not!
  • sounds good Nicolas! Well worth the 2 hours it will probably take me :)
  • You have rightly said that article marketing is once in a lifetime effort and full life benefit phenomenon.
  • It doesn't matter what the topic is you write for. You must chose a topic which you can fully cover in that article. And It should be interesting and informative.
  • As long as it is well written, there will always be someone interested by your article. What is popular in the social sites is an entire different issue by itself.
  • Well the unbeaten truth about article marketing is that even after a long long time, you will yourself getting traffic from your ancient articles.

    Ben
  • Hi Ben,

I couldn't agree more with you, one time effort, lifetime reward... you can't beat this kind of ROI.

Even if 1% of the backlinks you get are worth something, article marketing brings me an additional 1-2,000 backlinks per month. With that ratio, I would still get 1-200 good links, so to me it's worth my time.
  • Yup yup.. Free backlinks for life! That's the way..
  • Yes this the truth about article marketing. That you will have benefit for a long term.
  • Again, I agree with you Nicolas! Article marketing is really a great way for us to gain more exposure and strong one-way link. Recently I was writing articles and submitting to EzineArticles, but I wrote for another of my blog, I did get tons of pageviews to my blog. I do hope that I would get sales over there too. I'll update you my result later on. :D
    Another great post from you!

    Regards,
    Lee
  • That's great news Lee, I surely look forward to hear more about your success with article marketing!

Focus on conversion and split testing on your site if you want to increase you sales, it seems you already got the traffic! :)
  • Yea, I think I should test other methods instead of article marketing to increase my sales. I think article marketing is what I can do for now, Nicolas if you have any new and effective method to increase sales and traffic, don't forget to share okay? :D

    Regards,
    Lee
  • Pls share it with us. We wanna to know about it. Which kind of method you follow?
  • Video marketing also works great and really help to increase conversion rate.
  • Its very great and pleasant news for all of us. Its very inspirational I hope I can also do it. I had done it but can't get much traffic for that. I get only a few thousands for it.
  • I guess writing articles online does help create backlinks to the blog. However I just hate the waiting time for the articles to get approve.
  • Yea, EA might need to take about 1 week to review and approve your article, if your article has problem and it will take longer. If you want strong backlinks, this is what you should do and follow.

    Regards,
    Lee
  • You don't need to bother about the waiting time, after all, you can do plenty of other things during that time!

Anyway, if you really wrote a genuine quality article, there's nothing to worry about and you'll be guaranteed to be approved.
  • Yea, but sometimes we may face problem like spelling or grammar error, so it may need to take some times to edit and get approved. It's good to submit article in EA, I've submitted few articles there and looked good. :)

    Regards,
    Lee
  • I have to say I am one of those people that love article marketing. Easy to build backlinks and make sales from my mini review site. I will also be doing some article marketing with my new ebook coming out.

My biggest problem with article marketing is I could have placed those articles on my blog to rank in google, bring more traffic to my blog, and make money from having such a high traffic blog.
  • Hi Deneil,

You can still put those articles on your blog. Just change the title and first paragraph a bit. That should get you more traffic for sure.
  • Actually Alan, it works just fine even if you don't change a thing... people are overly talking about duplicate content, but the only place where it really matters and affect you in when you have duplicate content on your site.

If similar content on different sites was really a problem, you wouldn't see so many site talking about the same news or PR that you see everywhere, in addition I like to see my article on my blog in top of the SERPs along with the listings of that same article in other directories or site.

I don't really care which site my article is on, be it mine or someone else, in the end most of the people will still associate the work to me and come back to my site.

I mean when you got 8 or the top 10 results on Google showing a snippet with your name and work (even if they are different sites) it sure does help to convince people that this guy where you see his name repeated over and over must know something...
  • Hi Nicolas,

The only reason I said about re-writing some of it is that way your blog post could rank for different keywords or not have to compete so much with the articles in directories. If you don't re-write, I would suggest first posting to your blog, then wait for Google to index it before submitting to directories. Would you recommend that as well?
  • Hi Alan,

You have a valid point too, in the end it all depends of your strategy. If you don't mind having a directory with your post ranking (possibly) higher than your post on your blog, then there's no problem about it (anyway this situation can easily be corrected with a few good backlinks).

The more I have options to list my work on the first pages of results be it from my blog, articles, or videos, I'll take it ^_^
  • Agreed. And for me, my blog would out-rank them because I spend the time building links to it.

I've heard of people linking other articles to their EzineArticle articles to boost that article's rankings. I'd personally rather have my blog at the top, but as you said, the more the better.
  • Personally I don't mind linking to my guest posts, but I don't do that for my articles on the directories.
  • I thinks its not a better way it will be a duplications of a article. Its better to write a new for you blog. Its important that you title should match with you article.
  • Offsite content duplication doesn't really impact SEO, however onsite content duplication does.
  • Hi Deneil,

You still can post them on your site too if you want, but just think differently when you are doing article marketing, just like when I write a guest post on Peter's blog, I could have this post on my site too.

But the purpose of this guest post or the articles I write and submit to article directories is different.

The posts on your site entertain your readers, while the posts outside your site bring you more readers.
  • You have to say overall article marketing plays a vital role in generating good number of backlinks and diverting traffic to your website.

    Pretty well-written article indeed!
  • Personally, I'm a fan of article marketing. It's easy to build backlinks to any page you want as well as promote a specific product or service. The problem I think many face is having the time to write the articles. If you can afford to do so, outsource the work to someone else. That will free up your time for other things, like building links elsewhere.
  • Outsourcing is always a good option too, provided of course that you are aware of the quality of the work produced by those people. :)

For this reason, I have a tendency to like to do things myself. ^_^
  • If you are writing high quality articles that are actually useful and informative to readers then article marketing will work wonders for you because lots of people will want to re-publish your articles. However, if you are like most people and just write the bare minimum to get it accepted into an article directory then you won't see much benefit. It's all about putting in the extra time and effort to write awesome articles.
  • Hi Trent,

Totally agree with you on that, this is why I always recommend people to write good quality articles instead of short spammy ones.

Not only your chances of having your article approved are way higher, the ongoing benefits you'll get are also much more.
  • @Nicolas: I am now habituated to seeing your guest posts on many blogs I visit ;-)

I will correct you here. There are only two type of people.

1 People who love article marketing.
2 People who don’t know about article marketing.

Your expectations from articles should be limited. With good content, articles themselves can rank well and send traffic. Of course people will steal your content and not give you a backlink but they will do so even for your blog posts.

Article marketing is a great way to exploit long-tail keywords to your advantage.
  • Hi Jeet,

That's a good thing if you get used to it! ^_^

The main reason why I use article marketing is for deep linking on my posts.

Unfortunately, there will always be some dishonest people, and internet just make it easier for them.

Luckily, more people are honest than dishonest. I just want to believe in the good nature of people! ^_^
  • how long does an ideal article should be?
  • It depends of the directory you are submitting to. I have noticed that they require longer and longer article, but I haven't come across any directory that requires more than 700 words minimum.
  • You are right about it depends on the directory which you are submitting.
  • Your article should be at least 400 words. This is the requirement for many. Very few require 500 words. EZA requires 250, I believe. Each article directory is different, but for the most part you'll be safe with 400 words or more.
  • alan what platform should i use as a starter of being a blogger? thanks.
  • @Jewelry Making Supplies, Use Wordpress... the self-hosted version. You can go to http://wordpress.org/.
  • I thinks wordpress will be good for you its more friendly then any others.
  • I do internet marketing but active for three years and I know that the marketing is very important for Seo. It is very easy to build a feedback link, or improve existing products.
  • Article marketing mostly helps with deep linking when it comes to SEO, but from an internet marketing stand, it can generate decent traffic too.
  • I thinks its really helpful for SEO. We can get high traffic with a class article. If you are a good article witter you can earn money in article marketing.
  • Are you referring to making money from ghost writing or from using article marketing to promote products/programs?
  • Article marketing is very nice for SEO. You can earn $5 to 10 for a 500 words article. You can have good money with it.
  • That's more Ghost writing than Article marketing.
  • If you have no other way to get backlinks then I would suggest to anyone getting started that they should use article marketing to its full potential.
  • I don't really see why one wouldn't have any other way to get backlinks... but it's true that there are many benefits from using article marketing; however one could also argue that any practice used to its full potential will be very rewarding too, if not more than article marketing.
  • The articles were OK but nothing great. Each one takes about 10 minutes to write. Another 2 sites jumped straight to PR2 with similar techniques although not quite as intense. Along with hubs and things like infobarrel and of course a few good quality in post one way backlinks it is surprising what you can achieve.
  • Increasing your PR is always a good thing, however one must not lose focus of the fact that getting PR is not an end at all; it doesn't bring traffic or money by itself.
  • yes article marketing really matters. its the best way to get traffic.
  • Hi Remesh,

I do believe that article marketing, however I don't think that it is the best way to get traffic.
  • How to increase the rank of a website using article marketing? please tell me about this topic.
  • If you place a link to your website in the signature of your article, the search engines will pick it up. This is considered a backlink to your site, and the more backlinks that are targeted with keywords, the more your website will rise in the rankings.
  • In addition, most of the article directories allow you to use 2-3 different links in your signature, which then should be used for deep linking; giving you an opportunity to build backlink towards pages that usually don't get any just so that you can keep them listed in the search engines.
  • Thanks for the addition, Nicolas. I totally agree.
  • Article marketing is on the best way to promote the site and get the backlink as you described in the post. its really very effective for site.
  • is it true that you can't apply for adsense if you use wordpress? thanks
  • I guess you are referring to the third party hosted version of WordPress.com; however if you are using the self-hosted version of WordPress.org, you can do what you want.
  • Though article marketing is a good way to get one way backlinks I believe its always better to diversify ones link building sources as this will give more credibility to the links and will also suffice in the long run as search and ranking algorithms are changing rapidly. But anyway thanks for a good informative post bringing out both the bright and dark sides of article marketing.
  • You are correct, the more you can diversify the source of your backlinks, the better it is. One main objective when doing SEO is to get your work having lasting effect, not just some short live trick that will last until the next update.
  • Article marketing also gives links from diverse IPs which is also considered of importance by many search engines.
  • Article marketing is one of the more effective link building techniques that exists. Site optimizers should definitely include article marketing in their link building portfolio.
  • Well at least if not for the link quality, you can get a decent amount of traffic from article marketing is those are well written.
  • Tanks for the blueprint on article marketing laid out in newbie language..I will most certainly be applying these principles ...Thankyou
  • Hi Samantha,

You're most welcome. I think it's important to write in ways that everybody can understand rather than just a few in the know...
  • Article Marketing definitely helps in terms of SEO (as you have mentioned) and also in terms of long term traffic. It helps in building valuable one way links that search engines loves and can definitely help in ranking higher in SERPs. Though it takes time and effort but it is worth every cent of it.
  • Absolutely, and the best part is truly the leverage you get, I mean you write one article submit it and it will spread more and more over time... all while you are doing something else!
  • I personally don't like Article Marketing much - or shall I say I don't enjoy doing it? Simply because I struggle with writing in general, so an article can take me a couple of hours (or longer) to write and that's just not good enough. Also, finding good topics to write about takes a lot of research time. Mind you, Article Marketing can really boost your SERP's, so it is definitely worth doing... but for me maybe outsourcing is the way to go.
  • Hi Petra,

Maybe this is because you are trying too hard to write something or you are in a niche that is not so interesting for you.

Just write as it goes without thinking too much, I found that people tend to like the natural style better as long as you have valuable and useful information to share with them.
  • I am convinced article marketing is one of the best promotion tools available..added with quality back links one can quickly gain great exposure..Thanks for a very informative article.
  • Hi Chantel,

Very well said in just 2 lines of comment. I agree with you.
  • You have perfectly brought out the importacne of article marketing in SEO. In fact it is one of the most potent ways to builds one way links to a site. It also has the potential to draw considerable traffic if done properly and consistently. Thanks for the informative post.
  • The biggest problems people have to face when doing SEO is time. SEO is just so time consuming, but when you consider that all you need to do here is write an article and submit it and everything else with happen by itself.. I just can't say no to that. ^_^
  • yes article marketing does help with seo. I know from experience article sites are authority sites that give you a lot of link juice because of this and there high pagerank. It is also the best free traffic that you can possibly receive
  • I don't know if that's the best free traffic you can get, but it sure is a good source of traffic indeed.
  • I think it may be a nice way of making good revenue at home. Anyone can do this who have writing dexterity. M i right our wrong.
  • First, don't submit your articles to directories that don't have some sort of Google juice or it will be a waste of your time. Directories like ezinearticles.com and goarticles.com are a good place to start.
  • There are many article submission directories out there, and article directory submissions are a very effective technique.
  • Since you are new to online marketing and want to learn more about article marketing, I suggest that you check out www.mattbacak.com for some great information on marketing.
  • Article marketing, which is also called bum marketing in the online world, is a great way to drive traffic to your site and get backlinks, which are very important as well. Some people think that simply throwing up a random article onto an article directory will do them good, but there are specific things that you need to do with your articles in order to make them profitable.
  • what kind of articles is better for SEO, 250-350 words article or 600-750 words article ??
  • paula7928
I wrote an article for one of my websites about 3 or 4 years ago and submitted it to only one article directory. Many others published my article on their websites and each month I am still receiving traffic as a result. It was well worth the 20 minutes it took me to write it.

    Paula

  • Good article - I have had some success with article marketing but no where near enough to keep this as my one source of traffic!
  • As per my consideration article marketing is one of the best method for getting back link easily and making money through online. It depends upon your ability and effort.Any way thanks for your excellent presentation.Keep in touch.
  • That means when you do article marketing, submit only to QUALITY article directories -- otherwise you will just be wasting time because you won't see any positive results. Look only for those article directories that actually review submissions, not accept every single articles including the crappiest ones.
