Blog Traffic- Top Tips To Increase Blog Traffic

Using a blog to generate and increase blog traffic was probably never in the mind of the very first blogger more than 10 years ago. Similarly using it to get your pages indexed quickly or working to get an increase in search engine ranking. In fact I would even say when you and I created our first blog, how to increase blog traffic was furthest in our mind or a top priority. Using it as a marketing tool probably was, complimenting what we would term today as a non-interactive page – our static website.

Today, as more than 120 million blogs have emerged, a blog is used more for generating backlinks, and to bring you free organic search engine traffic or  traffic directed from other blogs.

So as your blog evolved over  time and throughout your blogging history, you must have witnessed some phenomenal blog traffic happening on your blog. Perhaps a new traffic building technique you were testing out got some fantastic results or something which you’ve been religiously doing in getting your blog traffic. Share with us here any of your best methods which have helped you get an increase in blog traffic. Give your blog traffic tip by giving your comment below. Then come back here again to read other good tips that others have shared here.  A Tip for A Tip. :)

  • A Fresh and Informative article always brings the high quality visitors.
  • Many make the mistake of believing that once they create a blog, people will immediately flock to it. There are millions out there so why would they visit your blog?
  • @tours in india: That's true and it is important to make your blog worthy of their visit like unique content and offer them stuff that makes them revisit again and again. Thanks for your visit.
  • I have tried link exchange sites like link referral. That only brings in a few visitors unless you spend a lot of time viewing and reviewing others websites. I also submit to ezine articles. I have seen some traffic from doing that.
  • Not that many tips were shared in the comments and I think that was the original point of this post. I've seen Yahoo Answers, blog commenting, and SEO.
  • Blogging is a great way to advertise because the pages are frequently updated which results in more attention from the search engines. It's a good idea to use blog submission services to submit your blogs to online blog directories.
  • The easiest way to bring a consistent amount of traffic to your website is through Search Engine Optimization. This is when you edit the code of your websites so that they can be indexed and found easily by users searching on sites like Google.com and Yahoo.com.
  • Bandwidth is 2 things. It can refer to speed (how fast someone can download something from your site) or it can refer to how much data can be downloaded from your site per month. That's the one you're interested in.
  • Patriotic Plates..Try adding some quality backlinks to your site this should have an almost immediate effect..link to travel blogs etc ..i have found that my site rises up my chosen keyword on the search engines when applied.Good Luck
  • Great insight into blog traffic and postings..One also gets interesting perspectives from other posters which make very interesting reading.
  • Peter, I enjoy your blog and I appreciate your resourceful posts.
  • Blog usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.
  • For me, increasing blog traffic is the most difficult thing to do since I have no related software such Blog Commenting software. It's not an easy job to get a quality backlink manually.
  • We are newer. So, we loved to turn around on every blog that talk about blog, traffic, seo etc and read what they said. We loved to read your blog traffic tips. Thanks Peter.
  • themrb
@ person above me, i never thought of that method,
I have spent way too much time online recently, and as i lost my job due to recession, i might aswell head over to yahoo answers and assist people on topics i know =) thanks. appreciate the ideas.
  • What I am doing currently for one of my blogs in the diet niche is I go to Yahoo Answers and answer some questions there, putting a link back to my diet blog in the source. I have only just started but I think taking part in communities like that and providing good and informative answers can generate a nice amount of traffic. You just have to make sure you do not put your link in the answer every time as you don't want to be seen as spammy.
  • I think posting on different forums and blogs can generate some amount of traffic.
  • I have a weather blog and my traffic is dead. I have it on google an yahoo's search engines but I need more. Does anyone have any tips?
  • some of these are really great tips. thanks :]
  • @ Car Dealership Website: Welcome to this blog and community and thanks for the kind words.
  • Hi Peter,

I comments gave me some great traffic, but I guess more on the form of comments but SEO has increase my search engine traffic that are far more huge.

BTW, Peter, Did you got my email? Did you still need any help? Let me know.

    Luis
  • @ Marketing Business Review: Yes I got your mail. Sorry I haven't got back to you. I just recovered my blog after facing problems after the WP2.7 upgrade. It was a bad idea but I did it because I had many redirect 301 problems that made me lose my PR and only WP 2.7 had this upgraded plugin.
  • I have found blog commenting, using forums, and social media to have really worked for me and noticed a great amount of traffic on my blog.
  • @ Salwa: Yes I do too as well. Thanks for dropping by.
  • I have noticed a great amount of traffic increase by tweeting and posting forums
  • @ Arfan: I'm not so lucky as you. For me tweeting doesn't bring that much traffic. Other people retweeting my posts yes. Posting forums is a good way I've found in getting traffic but only if I have a very good post to share.
  • I am still new to blogging, but from what I read (I also wrote about it) search engine traffic is the best. Other traffic from social sites will stop if you dont update them often.
  • Search engine traffic can be the one that requires more hard work but when its done it is unstoppable.
  • @ Marketing Business Review:Agree Luis. Nothing can beat free organic search engine traffic. But no pain no gain right?
  • @ PShankar: Welcome to this community. Yes indeed free organic search engine is unbeatable. It's also everlasting, unless you get into trouble that is.
  • thanks for providing a great response it's very helpful
  • @ almir: You're very welcome!
  • I wonder what keyword phrase you are targeting Peter? LOL!

Seriously though there is no doubt that blogs have become an important part in an online business strategy. Every company can benefit from running one (or more) blog(s) but even though blogging has been around for a long time now there are still thousands of companies that are not taking advantage of what blogs have to offer. You can only wonder....
  • @ Mikael @ Retire Rich: LOL now with all this talk about Google changing its algorithm on keyword over optimizing, not sure what is keyword optimizing vs keyword over-optimizing?
  • Pere here's a definition for you:

Keyword Over-Optimizing = I learned this the hard way. I do my research, get my keywords, build a website, write my ad copy and just to be sure I get listed for my main keyword I insert it into the copy way too much. Sometime to the point the copy starts not to make sense.

Keyword Optimization = Exactly the same process except that in my ad copy I take note of how many words in total are in the copy and I mention my main keywords once every 100 words. I mention the keyword right a the very beginning, sprinkle some in the body of the copy and make sure that I mention it twice in the last paragraph (once in the very beginning of the paragraph and once at the very end of the paragraph). If the copy is an article then I mention my main keyword twice in my Bio using links (one is correctly spelled the other is a common misspelling for the other link.
  • @ Medical Billing Trainer: Thanks for sharing your definition. I practiced all this too.
  • Not a problem, I am happy to share what little I have.

    Paul
  • Well Peter, I'd have to say blog commenting. So far it's been doing very well for me. There's also forum posting, Twitter, article marketing and many other methods to get direct traffic. Natural search traffic, however, is by far the best kind of traffic to get, which is improving for my blog. All the methods I mentioned will help in increasing search traffic, so all are necessary.
  • @ Work From Home Opportunities: Alan I have to agree with you on that as I'm seeing you all over the blogosphere making your presence felt. I'm glad to see you making a name for yourself in the community that I think I introduced to you (I think).
  • Yes you did, Peter, and I thank you for that. There's some other terrific blogs that I plan to become active in as well.
  • Hi Peter,

I feel that it's all in the content. I update my blog almost every day and try to provide something of value. When you provide knowledge that is useful people will find you.

    Ryan
  • @Ryan:You said it. The keyword is "value", People look for solutions to their problems or shortcomings. So this is so important to the visitors to your blog.
  • ryan you are right if you keep updating you content than the search engines will find you and its great and all but thats only half the battle now you need to work on the link building process
  • I just keep writing unique content, that people want to read, and people keep coming back =D
  • @Joey Logano Fan/@almir: Good content and marketing it is a real puller. There isn't anything that can replace good interesting content. No shortcut.
  • thats great for you joey considering writing quality unique articles people will find you and they will continue to come back its what separates you from the other congrats on this feat
  • Hmmm. Increasing you backlinks, social friends and blogging what hot and whats on top is what think will work out.
  • @Vic-BusinessAccent: I totally agree with you. These things are so important. It's like having your 3 meals a day LOL. You can't do without.
  • Nice tips.

I have not visited your blog from a while.. Nice to see you again...
  • @Nihar: Hi Nihar, it's good to see you here. Yup it's been a long time and hope you're doing fine. Well let's visit each other more often shall we?
  • nihar try to not miss because peters blog is one of the best places to get information
  • Blog traffic is a must if there is a need to sustain readership and visits in order to maintain the business online. Thanks for posting.
  • @ Chaunna Brooke: Welcome to this community. Without traffic our blogs mean nothing even if you have the best content on your blog.
  • info above are probably has a point.,. but sometimes it is all in the keyword., keyword is the main key to SEO.
  • Yes you are right, if you choose a worng keyword you may be the first in the serps but still have not much traffic, research to pick up the right keywords it may be the key.
  • @ Seven Figure Marketing School: Welcome to this community. Yes keyword ranking is one of the key essentials of SEO and helps in getting search engine ranking which in turn brings in the traffic.
  • Social media, commenting and bookmarking all work well but to you have to work on it in cansistent basis in order to keep the traffic up. I'm learning how to use SEO as that will be an ongoing stream of traffic. I'm also learning that you really need a plan to keep the traffic coming
  • Social bookmarking can do wonders if done properly. It gives you a lot of high quality backlinks.
  • @ Luca Di Nicola: The important word you used is "consistent". Nothing comes on a silver platter for you. You do have to work at it and like they say rinse and repeat if it works!
  • Ha ha ha!! Top tip to increase your blog traffic? Easy, just write great content that people want to read and share!
  • @Nicolas Prudhon: Yes the good old content is king. it never fails.
  • some really great tips. I've heard that having regularly updated content on your site can help with Google rankings as Google seems to favour sites with activity. I'm soon to be launching my own blog and hope I can benefit from this!
  • @ Home-Work-Newbie: Yes you're right, It's very important to keep your website or blog updated frequently. That's important not just for the Googlebots but human traffic too. You won't want to come back to a site that seems to be a ghost town do you?
  • Twitter is a great source of traffic . And other social bookmarks like digg work well for me
  • @ Best CSS Gallery: I loved Twitter but I don't use Digg for a long time as my account was suspended for no reason.Anyway I think there are lots of other good social sites that I've used too, although except for SU don't see much traffic from others.
  • Peter, maybe it was because they know you know a lot of SEO and seems digg does not like SEO. I do not know why, but I guess it could be the reason.
  • Twitter has been performing pretty well for me and the traffic is of a good quality too. However I want to start targeting SEO as I think it's one of the best sources for massive blog traffic, along with social media.
  • Yes twitter it is another great way to get traffic but search engines traffic does not need you to do any tweet to bring it. Once you build the backlinks the traffic continues to flow without your help.
  • @ Dot Com Dud: I've seen some good traffic in twitter although it's not so consistent. I tend to get more of twitter traffic whenever I publish new posts. Thanks for sharing Dud.
  • Besides of commenting, link exchange should be a great way too. Other than these, I've tried blog submission to directory, article submission, guest posting, social networking, and offline traffic building (mouth-to-mouth). I don't rely on direct traffic right now, but organic traffic from search engine. :D

    Regards,
    Lee
  • @ Make Money Online: Thanks Lee for sharing. For me, search engine traffic amounts to about 45%, so there's definitely good traffic from search engines.
  • Yea, search engine traffics is the best, only organic traffics can bring you more adsense clicks, more sales, and more money! That's why everyone is eager to organic traffics. :)

    Regards,
    Lee
  • My blog still new. I still don't have techniques to increase my blog traffic. Maybe blog commenting is just another easy way to get traffic?
  • @blinnky: Welcome to this community. Absolutely, blog commenting is one of the easiest ways to get traffic, besides building good relationship with other bloggers. Your traffic grows too when you get to know more friends and bloggers in your blogging community. Thanks for dropping by.
  • Blog commenting is a good way to start generating traffic make sure your comments are worthwhile.
  • @ atmmultimedia: That's right James. For me too, blog commenting has been the best way to get traffic besides search engine traffic of course.
  • Hi Peter,

I somewhat have to agree there. I've invested a time into blog commenting, but it is not always the best return for traffic, but I've found it is a great way to come up with new ideas for content.
  • of course you have I've seen you on many blogs and your doing it specifically to get backlinks to your blog I know it and you know it as well
  • I think you're missing the main picture here. Blog commenting is not always about gaining traffic. Blogging is about learning.
  • Not only learning and traffic, there is building a community of blogger friends. And most of the times what you got is comments in your blog, for pure traffic high numbers maybe search engine traffic can bring you more, but may not mean more comments.
  • I have to go with Atmmultimedia and Marketing Business Review! Sure everyone would like to attain more traffic but most of us come here for:

    1) What we can learn,
    2) The experience of meeting new people that can help us further ourselves and business,
    3) The feeling of being a success because we are learning from those that are successful
    4) A place where we accepted as is and everyone knows our name like Norm from Cheers

I could go on and on! My take on this whole traffic thing comes down to this...

Everyone knows when one of our community members are here just for the traffic because they tend to post more often than the Mediators, Owners and long time members of the blog.

    Paul
  • @almir: Yes blog commenting does get you backlinks. But the word is that we should remember not to use the same anchor text keyword as there's going to be some change in Google algorithm. It's either already existing or coming soon.
