Blog Income Report-April 2009

blog income report Blog Income Report for April 2009 is out. I recently read a post from John Chow’s blog and he made a statement that there are about 120 million blogs but 95% of these blogs earn less than $100 a month.

So with this in mind what do you want to do if you belong to this category of bloggers. You could take heart that you fall within the 95% cateogry of bloggers and console yourselves that it’s really difficult to make money blogging. Or you could take up the challenge of making much more money than you currently do on your blog. For me I like the latter better..so keep up the spirit.

Blog Income:

  • Private Advertising: $19 ($48)
  • Third Party Ads: $29 ($72.92)
  • Clickbank Sales/Affiliate: $16.12($30.68) (CBproAds+others)
  • Webhosting:$60.00
  • Scratchback: $28.48
  • Others:$63.00 (blogging services)

Total Revenue: $215.60 ($299.20)

My clickbank’s CBprpAds, alternative to Google Adsense for this blog continues to give me some more affiliates. I had  7 new signups in Apr including one paid account. I am still trying hard to get my Google Adsense account reinstated but as of now and expected, no reply from Google.

This month saw for the first time, some earnings received from Scratchback as the payout limit is $25.00 after getting the 7th purchase. To me at $5.00 a text link is still the cheapest ad you can ever have on this blog, or any blog for that matter. Considering that the first scratchback link ad has remained here for the last 3 months. Anyone wants to purchase one here? :)

This month too saw another first for me. I started doing some freelance work on blogging and the $63 represents income earned on providing such services for one week part-time. I’m providing my service to an affiliate guru and paid  by the hour and I get to learn from this guru at work too. It helps to incentivetize whatever new ideas I have which may need me to invest a little money to see it through. One of them is a new blog which I’ve just created only a few days ago. It’s a niche blog focusing on reviews on affiliate programs and other affiliate marketing topics.  Check out my new blog and let me know what you think. But be kind, this baby is just a few days’ old.

How much money did you make off your blog in April?

  • Hi Peter, Thanks for sharing you profit sources. I'm interested in CBprpAds but I can't seem to find the price for a pro account anywhere on their site. Is it a monthly fee? Are you still offering a free site review for your affiliates? I have had little success with Adsense for several years now. It was a great source of revenue for me when I first started but not anymore.
  • @ Brian D. Hawkins: Hi Brian, when you sign-up you have a choice of 3, 6, 12 months or life membership and the service charges to join range from $19 to $99 accordingly. A pro account is recommended otherwise using a free account when you display your ads(contextual, banners etc) not all will use your clickbank ID, only about 30-50%. Also free accounts affiliate members who join using your link do not belong to you and you lose all earning of a good 50% joining fee. Let me know if your need more information.
  • Congrats Peter. So you're in the top 5%!! I would be great if you would show the trend as well so we can see your rise to fame and wealth. Maybe a comparison next month?
  • @ Mikael: Thanks but so are 6 million others ahead of me, so I won't call it my rise to fame and wealth. I'm just a beginner when it comes to making money blogging, real money that is.
  • Btw Peter,

Did you know how to make Disqus to use the date instead of realtive time in the comments?

I already set it up to Absolute but it seems it does not work.

    Luis
  • @Marketing Business Review: I'm also using relative time so I'm not sure. Try going to Disqus forum and read other posts. Many people would have asked this question so you might find the answer there.
  • I do agree with Mikael you are certainly making a lot more money than most bloggers I know. Many of the bloggers I've met barely make over the 100 dollar hump. You are certainly making double of what they were ever able to make, congrats to you Peter and your hard work.
  • Hi Peter,

    Congratulations, great earnings.

I just left you a comment in your new blog. It looks pretty good.

And you said you do all this part time, wow, what would you do if you had full time to work in your biz.

    Luis
  • @Marketing Business Review: Well if only I had more time like you Luis, things would be so much better and I can get more things done. Lucky you.
  • Looks like you had a successful month, congrats! Way to go :)
  • @ Best CSS Gallery: Thanks for dropping by. Yes I'm happy but I'm focusing more in getting more sales. Only when I've found a way that works and consistently gives me more sales can I say I have a successful month.
  • I certainly agree like i stated before not money make that much money online because they just don't know how
  • Still working on my blog Peter, I hope that when it's up and running I can make it a success like yours! Well done :)
  • @ Home-Work-Newbie: It's always a great feeling starting a new blog. I hope to see it once you've set it up.
  • Well done!

I would say to the 95% that if you want to make money, consider the niche that you are in. It's hard to stand out from the crowd in the MMO niche and it is surprisingly difficult to monetize (especially with Adsense). On that basis I would say that you're doing well :)

Finance-related niches tend to pay quite well through Adsense as well as having good "per lead" opportunities.

But I'm still in the 95 % myself so what do I know!
  • @ Neil: You're absolutely right about how important a good niche plays in how successful you can be. That's why niche blogging is a good thing to do. I know adsense can be difficult but I've heard of people setting up 40 blogs and earning just on adsense income.
  • Good job, Peter. I like reading these income reports. It gives us an idea for our own blogs on some sources we can look into to get some monthly income coming in. I'm still part of the 95%, but I'm working on it :)
  • @ Work From Home Opportunities: Hey Alan, guess what I like reading income blogs too. Perhaps that's why I'm doing this. I thought it's a good way that we can learn from each other any good money making tips that we may not have heard or done. But like I said below, I don't think I'm very consistent in my income, that's why I got to learn and do more on this blog. But getting more targeted traffic is probably key in seeing more sales and income.
  • You're right. Targeted traffic is where it's at. Right now the only income I'm making with my blog is a few cents with Adsense. I have quite a ways to go lol. My home page performs better, though, and that's because I spent more time marketing it.
  • One of the best ways for traffic has to be just going ahead and making good acquaintances online. Get a few good mentions from more popular blogs and you could do pretty good by having members circulate around. Learn whose who and appeal to the icons. Here is also a pretty good start :p
  • Looking at it this way, makes me think that the 120 million blogs have over at least half a billion a month total revenue.
Maybe running multiple blogs about multiple fields may have a better impact.
Glad you're making money in the positive factor though, glad it's showing it's being profitable for you.
  • @ Jewelry Making Supplies: Hi Michael, actually what you've said makes sense. In order to make more money, you need to start a few more blogs including niche blogs. I don't think you can make that much money on one blog alone. That's the reason why I just started another blog. Just get it started even if it's progressing much slower that the first one. But I think you've figured this out too seeing you on this other blog. How many blogs do you own Michael?
  • I still just have one myself. It's being used more as a site for releasing translation projects for such and such comics from such and such studio. Can't really talk about them since it's not exactly legit. Making money off donations really doesn't work out well unless you keep it up and often. You could get lucky and have one or two crazy guys donate a few hundred because they like your work, but that all depends on whim. Needing to get into something more stable so I might pick out a few niche fields for blogs for other crafts.
Too many clothing blogs though, need to find something good in there.
  • i'm looking to make some extra income from home and blogging seems to be the thing to do now. is it really as easy as they say? do you really make money?
  • @ Patriotic plates: I would say making money from blogs is hard. But I think getting massive targeted traffic to your blog could be vital in seeing some good results.
  • Hi Peter,
Congratulation to you on the 5%. I would say I am still the one of 95% and I am working on it. It's not easy but I'm trying hard everyday.

    Thanks
    Kha
  • @ Best Work on Computer: Hi Kha, actually I've been lucky in the last 3 months as there were quite a no. of "once off" profits so I'm not sure if I'll be able to maintain it. I prefer to be consistent in getting regular profits.
  • You don't really have many offers for advertisement here do you? I am thinking since you have pretty good traffic that you could be making more off private advertisement
  • Thanks for sharing and good income you have Peter! Between, can I know why your Adsense had been banned by Google?
Peter your web hosting earning is people sign up web hosting under your referral link?

    Regards,
    Lee
  • @ Make Money Online: Hi Lee, my adsense account was suspended by Google just after 3 weeks more than a year ago. The reason given by Google was ambiguous which says something like " your account pose a risk to other users" something like like. No good explanation was given and attempts to find out the reason were unsuccessful. Perhaps someone found a way to cheat the system and used my account ....I don't know I'm just guessing.
  • @ Make Money Online: My adsense account was suspended just after 3 weeks more than a year ago. Google didn't explain much and only had this to say " your account proves a risk to other users" or something like that. I presumed someone hacked my account and use it go gain some advantage on Google Adsense and they had to put a stop. I was the innocent person.sigh (:

The web account I mentioned is Host4Profits which host my main account and this blog and the new blog. Yes the money I received represents affiliate income received when others joined H4P using my link.
  • Yeah I myself was suspensed from Google Adsense and it does bother me. They were telling me that I was receiving way too many clicks and that I was in jeopardy of getting my account terminated. Than one day when I went to my blog I noticed all of my Google ads were gone and I than went to check out my email and it was an email from Google. The email that Google sent me was that I was putting the adwords users in jeopardy and that they had to terminate my account.
  • Nice income for April, keep up the good work. I was no where near $200 for April.
  • @ KushMoney: Thanks for the kind words. We are all learning from each other as this post is to help us see where we could improve on our strategies.
  • Hey peter, I love it when bloggers do this, and share their income report, thats awesome that you do it :)
  • @ Joey Logano Fan: Thanks!
  • Hi Peter,
Congrats for another great month of making money online.
Is it beneficial to you to use DISQUS? Since it is not compatible with commentluv?
I am trying DISQUS too. But I'm worried to lose comment luv.
    Thanks.
  • @ viclogic: When I realized that with Disqus I could no longer use Commentluv I was pretty upset. But now I'm not. You wanna know the reason? It's because Disqus gives me more traffic. If I look at my admin page I could tell that more visitors are visiting to this blog coming from either the forum or (most probably) from within this blog. Disqus somehow is designed to allow visitors who land on a blog easily find other posts.
  • So Disqus gives more traffic? Would you think it's good for others to try out Disqus or is this more of a case to case thing?
  • @ Jewelry Making Supplies: I have not made any study of Disqus so I can't say for sure. Well just try it if ever you got a chance like a new blog.
  • I always thought that blogging was going to be a huge money maker, I have 12 websites now and my blog makes the least out of all of them, It is only making about $200 a month. But an extra $200 is an extra $200 so for now I keep it going.
  • Great Job Peter! As of February Technorati stated that it is tracking over 112.8 million blogs and that it's numbers Do Not include about 72.82 million Chinese blogs. That number is astronomical but it is more astounding to find out that only 5% of them are making over $100 a month especially when I see so many products in the marketplace that promise to make you a Blogging God and make you rich in the process.
  • That is such a nice feeling everytime I read an income report from someone. Personally I like >$200 per blog is great and if you scale it up and own 4-5 blogs, you would have a decent nice income to rely on.
  • @One Week Marketing Review: That's very true and I've known a few friends who have done just that, but it's niche marketing. Mine's not a niche blog so it's gonna take many other factors to pull in this kinda income consistently.
  • Dang, 4-5 blogs in order to make $1000 a month! Where in the world does someone get the time to keep up with creating the content and all the other factors that goes into keeping just one blog and it's readership interested?

Personally I would rather figure out a way where I can make 1 blog i a niche I am passionate/knowledgeable about and there are enough sponsors/advertisers that will allow me to make $1000.

My niche is alot smaller and gets alot less searches a month than let's say Internet Marketing. However even part-timer forum leaders and bloggers that I know on a personal level make more than $1000 and they tell me all the time that they attribute their success to the fact that they focus and dedicate their time and energy into only one subject matter instead of trying to cover several different topics (across different markets) to bring in a certain dollar amount.

I highly commend those that run 4 - 5 blogs but I couldn't and wouldn't do it for only $1000.
  • @Medical Billing Sitemap: You raised very good points here. If you go into Niche marketing you can start many blogs some which do not need too much maintenance. The trick is to find the right niche to go into.Your thery to dedicate one blog to one topic is excellent and practised by many successful marketers that I know..
  • how long will it take for you to start earning on you blogs? thanks.
  • @Jewelry Making Supplies: There isn't a fixed time time i guess. Some take more time while others take less. It also depends on how targetted the niche is too, on how much contents you have on your blog etc. Some people prefer to use their blog as a powerful channel for communiction and use the homepage to make money and don't mind if their blogs don't make much money.
  • I know on a personal level make more than $1000 and they tell me all the time that they attribute their success to the fact that they focus and dedicate their time.
  • Also free accounts affiliate members who join using your link do not belong to you and you lose all earning of a good 50% joining fee. Let me know if your need more information.
