Whether it’s through backlink building or something else, achieving top search engine ranking on the major search engines especially Google must be the greatest desire of every online business owner. Well certainly since everything that you hope to achieve in your business depends very much on it. Web traffic, online profits, marketing strategies, brand marketing, website popularity among others.
What I learned from my recent backlink building success
While I certainly won’t call getting to Google’s page 1 for three keyword phrases over 3 weeks a major milestone in my Internet Marketing journey, I do relish a moment of satisfaction. I guess it’s these little things that keep us going. But what have I learned? I learned:
- that quality of backlinks is more important than quantity. Getting 10 links from PR6-PR9 is of greater value than getting 100 links from PR1-PR2 sites.
- Google’s page rank does not mean much since I was able to outrank many sites which had higher page rank than my homepage – due to my high quality PR sites’ backlinks
- A common mistake many new marketers make while searching for backlinks of their website is to run the query ” link:domain.com” in the Google search engine. This is totally inaccurate. A better option is through the use of the Webmasters Tools section.
- you get the benefit of a site with high page rank even if your link appears on any of its many pages with ZERO page rank.
- it doesn’t bother me even if bad sites link to me, including spammy ones, gambling sites etc. I really cannot control people who choose to link to me but it’s important to know that it won’t hurt me. But it would be a different story to link back to these sites, so I absolutely don’t link to such sites.
- that Angela Edward’s backlink building program really works. Perhaps I’ve been barking at the wrong tree but it helped me achieve in 3 weeks what I could never did in 2 years- at least for these 3 keyword phrases.
how many backlinks do you need to outrank other websites?
- there is no cast-in-stone magic number. It depends on how competitive your niche is. For very competitive ones like Internet Marketing, Weight Loss or Dating Service, you should do about 100-200 high PR backlinks.
- it also depends on where your keyword phrase ranking currently stands. I mentioned in my recent post “Link Building: Taking Backlink Building To a Higher Level“, it took me about 50 good links to move keyword phrase ‘online business opportunities’ 22 positions to #2.
- I would say for niche marketing sites you would need about 50-70 high PR links to see good results.
my most used and reliable tool in backlink building
- A firefox addon’ which identifies dofollow links by the color purple (red signifies nofollow links)
Keyword Research – Knowing Your Competitors
When you are trying to outrank other websites in your keyword phrases to get top search engine ranking, you should spend some effort sizing up your competitors. Finding out what’s their SERP on the same keyword you’re trying to rank for, how many incoming links, page rank etc are critical information you can use to beat them. There are many tools which can do this job but lately I was pretty impressed with Keyword Spy Tool which helps you spy on your competitors in seconds. Well go take a look and try it out for yourself when you’re doing some keyword research.

Again, congrats on your #2 ranking! And yes, I agree with you that we can't control bad sites who link to us, it doesn't matter, but definitely we don't link to bad sites.
Between, my blog is back to the usual ranking which is 1st page, #10 or #11 position, but it doesn't rank better than the previous ranking, I'm going to do another pack of link building and see whether it can be improved.
Regards,
Lee

Hi Peter, that sounds great. However, if I understand correctly, Angela's program is essentially about paying for links? Sounds a bit risky trying to rank well in Google by doing something that they frown upon?
August 23, 2009 at 6:19 pm
@ Rod@Wilson Portable: Looks like you did not read my earlier post. It’s white hat. It’s not buying links. It’s just giving you a list of very high dofollw PR sites which Angela painstakingly locate them for your link building. The $5 you pay her is for her service to compile a list of very high PR websites. Now how much risk could that be.
August 24, 2009 at 12:04 am
You're right, I missed that bit – thanks for clarifying that.
August 24, 2009 at 2:32 am
Sir I read once again one nice post. Sir I am confusing something that I already got approx 50 backlink, but till now my page rank is not increasing from 1. What the rearson of this sir?
August 24, 2009 at 6:40 am
Big congratulations Peter!
Can I ask, have you noticed link numbers dropping in Google's new Webmaster tools? One of my sites has dropped to only 300 incoming links, but using another tool, like: http://backlinkchecker.net/en-EN/check-backlink... I see over 2,200… I've been reading about there being problems with the new webmaster tools. Have you also noticed this?

Ed
August 24, 2009 at 8:32 am
is backlink checking tools accurate?
August 24, 2009 at 11:38 am
@ Home-Work-Newbie: Hi Ed, I just checked my Webmaster tools and don't see any noticeable change.
August 24, 2009 at 11:39 am
@ Jewelry Making Supplies: The “backlink checker tools”, including Yahoo Site Explorer, take some time to show the links. Google will NEVER show them all to you.
August 24, 2009 at 1:33 pm
I too use Angela's back link service. It is a great find and well worth the low monthly investment. The links she suggests has moved everyone of my websites up in Google ranks.
August 24, 2009 at 6:30 pm
@wemaketop: Thanks for sharing your good experience on Angela's back link service. Yes the low monthly investment of $5 is probably the reason why everyone cannot don't take up the offer. It's worth hundreds if you ask me.
August 24, 2009 at 6:33 pm
@ Lee Ka Hoong: Getting another packet is a wise decision. I don't think that one packet is enough especially if you are targeting somewhat high competition keywords.
August 24, 2009 at 6:38 pm
@ moonheart009: Don't focus too much on page rank as it only helps about 20% in the calculation of how well you rank in the search engines esp Google. Focus more on link building and getting to page 1 of Google for your keywords.
August 24, 2009 at 10:07 pm
I've outranked many websites that have thousands of inbound links. I agree with your post. Fewer high quality links always beat out low quality/high quantity links. I also don't focus too much on page rank. Its way over-hyped. A PR 2 site can outrank a PR5 site any day if the webmaster really knows what they are doing.
August 25, 2009 at 12:30 am
@buzzyblogger:Thanks for sharing your link building experience and summing up quite nicely what everybody ought to focus their time on.
August 25, 2009 at 1:16 am
Hey Peter, I posted a trackback link in my post at http://www.buzzybeemarketing.com/No Follow Links To Your Blog_a_13.html' rel=”nofollow”>No Follow Links. People might not know, not all links are followed and counted by the search engines. If the link is tagged as nofollow, Google will not count it. So keep that mind when posting links on other sites. You could be wasting a lot of time. If you are just posting links for the link juice, and it is no followed, its a waste of time. If you are commenting on someone's blog because its a great blog, there are better ways to trade links. For instance, try posting a blog entry with a trackback link to Peter's blog
August 25, 2009 at 2:27 am
Yes Peter, I should work on another packet, I have a free July packet but I've yet to work on it. I'll do it then and see how's the result.
I agree with you, the keyword that I target is very competitive, perhaps I need to complete 2-3 packets of links to outrank others.
Regards,
Lee

I heard about Angela's service, but haven't tried it yet. I think I will soon
August 25, 2009 at 5:33 am
weird. Well, I hope it sorts itself out, just logged on this morning and noticed another 100 links have dropped off that particular site!! I'm starting to think Google doesn't like me!
Cheers,
Ed
August 25, 2009 at 6:46 am
I agree with you. Quality backlinks is very much important above all else. You should also link to a good neighborhood. It has a good effect on your blogs. So always opt for quality links.
August 25, 2009 at 9:19 am
PeterLee, I am using Angelas Backlink Builder, too, just working at it a little slower than you are. What I was wondering, when doing all the backlinks, you have to sign up for many many sites and create profiles, – it feels a bit weird signing up for all these sites just to create a backlink. Do you have any issues with that, or do you think that the result justifies doing that?
August 25, 2009 at 9:30 am
@ Best CSS Gallery: Yes it's never too late to do link building…it's never too late use Angela's backlinks
August 25, 2009 at 9:42 am
@ petraweiss:Email Angela. She mentioned that someone in Warrior Forum was kind enough to show how to cut down the time it takes to put in your links. She'll be happy to share it with you. I didn't use it as I don't find it a problem doing the old fashioned way. But you don't have to do all 30 links in one day – I know how busy you are
August 25, 2009 at 9:43 am
@ PLR Videos: Absolutely!
August 25, 2009 at 9:49 am
@ buzzyblogger: Hi Nathan, that's a good point you raised although for me I don't use blog commenting for link building purpose.
August 26, 2009 at 1:38 am
I guess Roboform can be used to complete profile pages.
August 26, 2009 at 6:44 am
Superb information, thank you very much Peter. Did you simply use Angelas Backlinks over 3 weeks and just use a couple of her Ebooks, or did you deploy other link building techniques?
August 26, 2009 at 10:58 am
@ suzie_100: Yes Angela's backlinks are all that I used for the 3 weeks I was doing link building for these 3 keywords.
August 27, 2009 at 7:24 am
Concerning the traffic for each rank positions, I just got this info to-day from Paul Johnson:
# 1 gets 42 % of all clicks
# 2 11
# 3 8
# 4 6
# 5 4
# 6 below 4
August 27, 2009 at 10:21 am
@ JuhaniTontti: Thanks for sharing this good information. Looks like we should all shoot for no. 1,2,3 if we want to see some decent traffic eh?
August 27, 2009 at 7:34 pm
After reading this probably I got backlinks from lower PR sites then my site has been falling far down from Google?
Thanks
Kha
August 28, 2009 at 9:35 am
Yes, this stats makes the keyword research very, very important. What is the best software for that?
August 28, 2009 at 10:46 am
@ Computer Work At Home Jobs: Hi Kha, it's never too late to start more serious backlink building. Follow a link building strategy and slowly but surely move up your rank.
August 28, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I passionate with backlinks.
I want to build more and more backlinks, the more i build the more high rank.
But it's a tough one because it takes a lot of time.
August 28, 2009 at 8:45 pm
@V.C: Well as they say you can't have the cake and eat it. If you are that passionate about getting more backlinks, you have to spend time to get them. Anyway you could just pace yourself doing it, something is better than nothing.
August 29, 2009 at 4:00 am
You're right.
My backlinks seem to be getting smaller and smaller every month =.=
August 29, 2009 at 4:49 am
I had seen this many time that unwanted links join with our site. I means bad sites. I want to know that are they good for PR or not?
August 29, 2009 at 4:51 am
It means that Yahoo tools are faster than Google. Thanks for this info. next time I will try yahoo.
August 29, 2009 at 12:06 pm
You can check your opponent's backlinks through backlinkwatch dot com, and you might also want to do link farming on those sites.
August 29, 2009 at 7:33 pm
@ ijstyles:Link farming is pretty much a black hat SEO practice and we should avoid this at all costs. You cannot control who is going to link to you and sooner or later Google will penalize you.
September 1, 2009 at 4:43 am
Every webmaster have desire to get in first top 10 pages in the Google search engine ranking and you have shown the better way to get that point.
September 1, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Hey Peter,
Great tips and observations. I totally agree that backlink building is all about quality, not quantity. I've also seen many low PR, even 0 PR sites outrank higher PR sites.
I read your review of Angela's backlink building subscription you did a while ago, and since it's obviously working for you, I might give it a try. The price isn't bad at all either. I haven't had much time to build backlinks, so getting a few quality links would be good for me right now.
Take Care,
Alan

I love both
September 8, 2009 at 10:45 am
Great post, very useful. Just one thing, do you manually submit to these sites or is there an automated tool that you use? All tips welcomed.
September 11, 2009 at 8:51 am
Thanks, Nice post you give all link building information.
September 11, 2009 at 9:14 am
@ mobile karen: It takes people around 3-8 hours on average to complete a 30 backlink packet (and worth every minute) but Angela provides a technique with video demo how it can be done in an hour to an hour and a half.
September 11, 2009 at 9:16 am
@ Alan Mater: For that kind of price of $5 it's too cheap. You won't regret taking it up.
September 14, 2009 at 1:38 pm
I totally agree. I'll definitely get in on it… probably today sometime.
September 21, 2009 at 5:40 pm

I think there are a few good tools for keyword research out there, most cost a little bit of money. I use Keyword Elite 2 and MicroNicheFinder. It speeds the research up a lot, but of course you can always do it by hand with Google's keyword tool or Wordtracker, too.
October 12, 2009 at 6:18 pm
@ firelite: I do this manually.
October 30, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Nice post, Peter. I was an Angela customer too but Ive cancelled and prefer to pay someone to do the sites for me for an extra few monthly dollars. These backlinking strategies definitely work though.

Peter, very valuable info here about how long some things take and level of effort. How fast, once say you do get dofollow links from 200 sites, will it take to actually see 1. the PR difference and 2. the SERP difference for certain keywords, in your experience? My estimation is at least 3 months based on some tests I did.
