When was the last time you ran a check on how fast your work at home business website loads? Perhaps one month ago? 3 months ago, or the day you had your website created? Don’t you think you owe it to your readers and your [tag-tec]subscribers[/tag-tec] whom you have openly said you’re providing good quality content while quietly saying to yourself how you wish you had more repeat visitors coming to your blog?
You might have one of the greatest looking websites in your niche but very few people are going to see it if it takes such a long time to load
I do not like to visit slow loading websites because the waiting time kills me and time is valuable. But if I have such thoughts, don’t you think my visitors coming to my site think the same way too.
The speed of your website or work from home business blog is the responsibility of the webmaster and you just have to set aside some of that valuable time to make this a periodic tune up. If you are just about to design your new work at home business website, do remember to check out how long it will take to load.
1. Minimize the use of images – The best way to get a fast loading web site is to minimize the use of images. It may be impossible to totally have a site without images and that’s not what I am recommending too. Perhaps set yourself 20% of your website having images. Remember all the popular sites like Google do not have many images. That’s because they place more importance to its load time as well as readers’ on-site experience.
2. Minimize the bytes of your html write-up by deleting all unnecessary characters, and blank spaces for fast loading pages.
3. Minimize the bytes of your website images with an Image Optimizer. This tool allows you to easily optimize your GIFs, animated gifs, JPGs, and PNGs, so they load as fast as possible on your website. I’ve also found out that you can easily convert from one image type to another up to an upload size limit of 300kB. Just to give you an idea what this means, I recently converted the image I had used on Work At Home Internet Business-7 In-Dept Link Building Tips . The picture size reduced from 105.61 KB to 13.09 KB, an unbelievable 87% reduction in bytes.
4. Use a HTML Validator to check out all errors found as such errors will increase your site loading time.
5. Reduce the number of animated GIFs as they take a very long time to load your pages. If it’s really necessary, choose smaller animated gifs.
6. Keep Your Code Clean – If you do use a WYSIWYG editor, most of the time you will receive redundant code added to your pages for example, these empty tags <font> </font>. Removing these excess tags will speed up your load time.
7. Keep your icons simple and small - Try not to use big images on your website. Instead use simple and small icons that add just a little color to attract your visitor’s attention.
8. Remove Anything You Don’t Need – Take a closer look at some of the things that you have put on your work at home business site and you will be amazed at the number of things you could remove, if not needed. This may be in the form of images, embedded sound files, widgets or animated GIFs.
9. Avoid Long Pages – Besides taking a longer time to load, long pages are not well received by your visitors. It’s a better idea to split these long pages into shorter pages which improves the page load up time.
10. Check your load time periodically – Make it a practice to check your website load time. It should be in your mental checklist to ensure a fast and error free site. Here is a website analyzer that you can use to quickly check it for your website.
Discover How You Too Can Easily Turn Your Blog Into A Super Fast Loading Blog
If you have a blog which is hosted in the
same domain name as your website, you can be sure that using these 10 tips will also improve the load up time for your blog too. However do you want your blog to load even faster to cope with the demands of so many plugins, and countless of creations you’ve made on it? Well I’ve asked my good friend Yan, of ThouShallBlog, who has been making a name for himself in the blogging fraternity in just 3 months what it takes to achieve this. He has the answer for us in “5 Possible Ways To Speed Up Your Blog”. I really hope you read it as I’ve found very interesting and useful ways here to get my blog up to speed.

They say “First Impression Counts” and it’s certainly true. First-time visitors will tend to click away if the site is loading too slow due to lots of unnecessary widgets or plugins.
We need to take a little break from our daily blogging once in a while to do some spring cleaning by removing the unnecessary and periodically check on our site’s loading time.
I think the title could be made into 15 simple tips instead. Thanks for the shout, Peter. I didn’t know that I have created such a buzz.

I’m glad you put a face beyond a name. It’s more personal in such an impersonal world.
By the way, it would be better if you add a line break after the author’s name.

Hi Peter
I dont know how you keep coming up with this stuff!
It seems every time I come over to look at your blog – there is a post about just what I needed to know!
This is very usful information for all webmasters.
We all know we need to make sure our sites load fast, but how often do you just forget because you are so busy with your online business objectives?
I never even bother with sites that are not on the screen in 2 seconds flat!
Thanks for the reminder to check out my site!
and great content – as usual!
Take care – Kym

Hi Kym,
It’s so good to hear from you again. I’m glad you liked my post and you’ve found the tips useful. Yes very often we get so occupied by other stuff that we forget the simplest tasks and the most critical ones too if you ask me. But you can do this in stages focusing on those easy ones first so you won’t take too much time doing so.
Have a great weekend ahead,

Hey Peter,
Great article and very nice to see many people benefiting from your tips.
Just like to share one tip of mine which I found to be rather useful.
If you’re using wordpress, you can try using the tag to limit the size of your blogpost to perhaps the first 300 words.
When used correctly, it will reduce the amount of data the visitor has to load on his/her comp, resulting in faster loading times.
Plus, if you insert the tag at the appropriate cliffhangers, readers will be curious and want to click on the “read more” link to read further.
In my test, it kinda increases the readership. Better for the visitor to look through the starting paragraphs of blog posts than to scroll through miles of never ending text.
Just my 2 cents.
Keep up with the great articles Peter.

Hi Kai Wei,
Thanks for dropping by. I believe it’s your first visit so a warm welcome to you. Thanks for your suggestion. I did think of that to show just a couple of paragraphs with a “read more here”. But I am following a link building strategy in which I am optimizing my blog home page, so it looks like I cannot do any effective keyword optimization if I choose this route. If you have any solution, would be glad to hear from you.

I’ve never really thought about my blog’s load time. However, from my knowledge of building static websites I know that too much images and a host of other things makes a webpage to load too slow.
Thanks anyway for the ideas revealed here. I’ll definitely check out those resources to optimize my blog.

Hi Chadrack,
Yes, your blog’s loading time is so important. I say this because I don’t have the time and patience to wait for a slow site to load up, so I presume others think alike too. Well hope you find some of these tips useful to you. Hope to see you here again and let’s keep in touch. BTW I just visited your blog and left a comment.

If you know a bit about web development then other things can be useful too like caching pages so that they dont load everytime for every user. Use of web 2.0, such a shame that there isn't any content management systems that take full advantage of ajax. Also using future technologies such as using sphinx for example to improve the speed that data is retrieved from databases.
