The online world can present an attractive arena to many would be entrepreneurs, especially with tales of generating a fast and passive income stream with little effort, but a true Internet sensation can take a great deal longer to develop.

Passive income ideas can flow thick and fast when you’re kicking back in your dressing gown with a glass of wine or chatting to a friend, but putting those passive income ideas into practice can take a little more effort than that in order to build a successful and lasting business.

How can I turn my passive income ideas into a reality?

So you’ve had the perfect passive income ideas, it’s sure to generate a steady stream of income that will see you through into retirement, or so you think. Not so fast. The Internet is packed to the rafters with websites offering services and goods in all shapes and sizes. Anyone can buy a domain name or start trading with relatively little hassle, so why aren’t we all millionaires already?

Not every business idea is destined for success but there are a few simple considerations the budding entrepreneur can take into account in order to give their online business the best possible start in a cut-throat world.

1) Preparation and research. These are two of the key foundations of entrepreneurial success. Ask yourself: Is there a market for my idea? Who are my target audience? What competition do I face, and how can I distinguish myself from them? Targeting your product and finding a gap in the market may significantly improve your chances of success.

2) Decide on what type of business best suits the product or service you are looking to sell. Will you be operating as a sole trader? As a limited company? Whatever type of business you decide to set up, and whatever the purpose, there are likely to be tax obligations that you will need to fulfill in order to keep it legitimate. Do some research into how tax obligations may affect you.

3) Sort your finances. How will you fund your start-up costs? Will you use your own capital, or take out a bank loans? There may be a number of funding streams available for a first timer. However, if you are borrowing money you will need to be very careful that you don’t fall into unmanageable debt. You may want to seek professional financial advice.

4) Make a business plan. Perhaps the most important step in turning your idea into something more concrete. Use the points above generate a business plan that will help you focus on your key aims. Outline you audience, you marketing and your financial plan. While this may not sound very glamorous, putting your ideas down on paper can help you take a realistic view of you business idea, spot the flaws and give a boost to your confidence when you start meeting targets. Taking the time and effort now to make a full practical and financial plan could save you a lot of money in the long run. You will need to have a business plan prepared if you decide to seek funding, a bank or similar loan to help with start-up costs.

Brainstorming passive income ideas is an important but relatively small part of turning those creating a fully fledged business. You might come up with a great passive income idea and manage to turn it into a reality without the help of a business plan, but you chances of success may be reduced, and at some point you will need to think about the financial and strategical future of your company.

Take some time to think about your goals, and how you would like you business to grow. Think big, but don’t be afraid to start small with the finer points of designing and planning you business.

Plan your work day

Take 10 minutes every morning (or if you prefer do it at the end of the day for the next day)Make a simple daily schedule and note everything that needs to get done that day. That will help you stay online and focused while avoiding distractions.

Go through with it

When it comes to work at home businesses, making a plan isn’t that hard, it only takes a few minutes, sticking with the plan is the hard part. But, if you want to succeed, it is necessary to stick with the plan. Do your best to stick with your daily schedule. However, in some occasions you may find it hard to go with the plan, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself a break here and there. And remember, not everything goes as planned always!

Keep motivating yourself

Motivation is one of the biggest factors when it comes to having a good work day and accomplishing all the daily tasks. And since you work at home, that means, you are the one who has to keep you motivated and going. A simple way to keep yourself motivated is to keep things that are motivating to you, close by, on your desk perhaps. Write down your biggest goal and keep it in your desk where you can look at it every time you feel down. Keep a copy of that book that inspired you to start this business. Anything that you can look at and get motivation from.

Treat it as a real business

Just because you are your own boss and work from home doesn’t mean your work is not important. Your work at home business still is a business and like any other business, it needs to be dealt with as a business and not a hobby.

Set working hours

Working at the comfort of your own home has its benefits and of course its pitfalls. Using those benefits to your advantage and avoiding those pitfalls will be an important part of where or not you succeed in working from home.

Building and maintaining a successful and profitable home business requires a lot of hard work, commitment and a willingness to never give up, but most importantly, it requires a laser like focus. By implementing these tips you can ensure your home business is on the right track to becoming and staying a profitable and successful business you can rely on.

What Was My Mistake On Top Search Engine Ranking?

Well  I was chatting with a good friend of mine online one day, someone who was already earning himself more than 100 dollars a day. I asked him what advice he could give me for a site that is already on Google No. 1 Position? I asked him specifically if I should continue doing link building or should I just ease off, leave it and focus instead on other sites. The reply came quick and he said something like “Don’t do anything. If it ain’t broke why fix it? ” That was 2 years ago.

Well fast forward to today, 2 years later, if someone were to ask me that same question, I would have a totally different answer for him or her.  I would say getting a site to Google’s No. 1 position is not the hardest part. The hardest part is knowing what you must do to keep that site ranking No.1 in Google.  There is no guarantee that it will remain there forever as most of your competitors are like you too. They will in no time displace your site’s position if you choose to be naive. Also Google is always changing its ranking algorithm. Think of Panda and you will understand just what I mean. There’s no rest for the wicked it seems!

The tip I am going to share with you today is found in a post I wrote sometime ago when I first discovered the article distribution site called Ezarticlelink. If you have not read it, here it is :”Discover How zArticleLink Auto Creates Backlinks For Your Blog. My intention then was to create some backlinks for my Learn Affiliate Marketing blog since I had neglected this blog and had practically zero backlinks. So I set up an Article Directory on the blog. Well after 1 year the site has now 1700 indexed pages, 1271 backlinks and PR1. Not bad for just setting it up and doing nothing because these backlinks are generated on auto-pilot.

Juggling Self-employment and Family Demands

There is something incredibly special about being able to work from home. There’s a sense of freedom – a sense of flexibility. At the end of the day, though, those of us who really do work from home know that freedom and flexibility can only occur if our schedules reflect just a little bit of structure. The hardest part about quitting my full-time job to become a full-time freelance writer was helping my friends and family members understand what it really means to work from home. Until that point, the only people I knew who “worked from home” were people who had office jobs and got to telecommute a couple of days per week – an altogether different animal.

Self-employed vs. Unemployed

Not long after I quit my full-time job, the phone calls started rolling in. Can you take your grandmother to the doctors? I need you to stop by the house and let the dog out for me. Do you want to go on a bus trip with us on Thursday? Can you pick your cousin up from school? All of the sudden, I was viewed as “available.” My family and friends didn’t think of me as self-employed. They knew nothing of working from home, looking for private clients, or setting their own schedules. They had a complete lack of regard and respect for my time and my work. They thought I didn’t work. They treated me like I was completely unemployed.

Making People Understand

This is where things get difficult for a lot of people who are self-employed. It doesn’t matter if you’re a writer, a graphic designer, an internet marketer, or in some other sort of business. Your biggest hurdle will involve making those around you understand your need for structure.

What does this mean?

It means not making yourself available to others 24/7. Set “office hours” for yourself and stick to them as much as possible. You obviously own the flexibility to change those hours as you see fit, but you’ll not only provide yourself with a little bit of structure but will help to draw boundaries that others aren’t welcome to cross. It will be a lot harder for your mother to call and ask you to run to the store if you don’t answer personal calls before noon; or if your friends know you are only free to go out to eat on Fridays.

It means learning to say no. It’s a tiny word with a lot of power, and you have the right to use it. Your lack of formal employment in the corporate world does not mean you have the time to run around and do things for others all day long. What many of my own family members and friends did not understand at first was that I no longer have paid vacation time or personal days. I have to plan the days or hours I take off because if I am not working, I will not get paid. Period. End of story.

It means you need to be patient. It is going to take time for those who love you to gain a firm understanding of what you do. Be calm and respectful and explain your new work situation as clearly as you can. Be consistent with your boundaries and with the times you say “no” to certain requests. Before long, those around you will start treating you as they would if you were working a regular 9-5 office job.

As a self-employed professional you have the obligation to put yourself first at all times. Your success – personal and financial – rests on your ability to get your work done daily. There will be an adjustment period and you may feel a bit overwhelmed at times but before long you will have a stable routine you can stray from occasionally if you really need.

For a long time, I used to think that only big commercial companies who have an online presence get Google Sitelinks. I was wrong. Even my home business blog may one day display these links continuosly too courtesy of the big G, I’ll come to that soon.

Just What are Google Sitelinks

Well for that I Google a couple of sites which are closer to home like HP Singapore and Sony Singapore. If you don’t already know just what Google Sitelinks are, well the image I took below will tell you just that:

Google Sitelinks are a collection of some related links of a website being searched and appears below the result of this website. Obviously Google has an algorithm that randomly and automatically select and display to the visitor. That’s another reason why it remains such a formidable search engine. And obviously only Google knows and is keeping it mum as in all other hundreds of their Google algorithms. But in this post, I’ve done a little research to try to decipher and arrive at some intelligent guessing.

How Can You Get Google Sitelinks For Your Site

1. Google mostly displays sitelinks only if your website is seen to be consistently ranking as the #1 keyword for the searched keyword.

2. Age seems to be a consideration factor by Google. Your website must be older than 2 years old. I have yet to see a new website get Google Sitelinks.

3. As Google No. 1 position, we would expect the keyword phrase to generate lots of searches and therefore this is another consideration. So you can expect any of your keywords that are not ranking on Google Page 1 let alone No. 1 position will not have any sitelinks displayed.

4. Given that in any website or blog, you may have numerous keyword phrases being targeted for ranking. However my take is that Google only looks at your main keywords and ignore all others including those long tail keywords as well.

Proof That A Blog Can Get Google Sitelinks

Well this blog called Smart Passive Income is a blog I found that Google has chosen to display Sitelinks. I should know because we have a common ranking keyword – passive income ideas. However though my home business blog does get Google sitelinks but not as often as this blogger’s. From what I know this blog is an authority blog that earns a five figure online income monthly.

Obviously when you get Google Sitelinks it can bring you more visitors, more clicks and more sales. So in summary to get to this desired outcome, make sure your main keywords are ranking not just on Google Page One but Google No. 1 Spot. My first Authority Website that I started on Dec 31, 2010 now gets constant traffic and earns its first adsense click albeit only 81 cents after 2 weeks. But I am thrilled to say the least. Why?

Well here’s 5 reasons why before I go into a little more detail….

Because:

1. it is not ranking in any specific keywords in Google (yet) so where did the traffic come from you might ask?
2. my belief in John XFactor takes me to another level of success. Success has many steps and this is just the first step that clearly tells me that his Authority Site Adsense Guide works.
3. I took actions 15 months ago when I started building micro niche adsense sites.
4. I can now prove to people that the best thing I have learned from XFactor about starting an authority site is – that you do not need to focus too much on specific keywords for your website.
5. building an authority website is a worthwhile investment of time and little money.

How Much is my traffic

Since a week ago I am getting about 5 – 10 impressions a day when I see in my adsense admin. That to some people do not mean too much but for me I  look beyond the figures. I look at consistency and it’s daily impressions that I am getting for a new site that has only 8 pages. Authority site that is not even ranking in Google. So imagine when it has 80 pages, 800 pages – now that’s the big picture.

Where does the traffic come from?

Well that’s a good question too considering that most people (like I was) put off launching an authority website because they think they don’t stand a chance with all those well established players in their niche.

My traffic does not come from just one or two keyword or keyword phrases. Like they figured it out, I don’t stand a chance.

My traffic comes from……hundreds of keyword phrases but I don’t lose hair over backlinking and other conventional methods of getting each of these hundreds of keywords ranked. That would be an insurmountable feat to accomplish. The secret? I just write very long articles. Read up my last post titled : First Authority Website Launched|Enter Web Content Studio and you will know what I mean.

Now I don’t write long articles for the sake of making it lengthy. Foolhardy that would be. It’s just that I ensure each of my authority website article has all the keyword phrases that all the top 10 websites for my niche has – yes all of their web pages.

Writing Themed Articles Works

My method of writing themed content articles that I learned from Dr Andy Williams is working very well.  When you theme a page this automatically “optimizes” the page for long tail phrases. The reason I got interested in this technique is because Andy revealed why it has to work….because Google relies on it in their algorithms and here is the proof that you can read it too. Andy did extensive research on this subject and discovered that all the pages in the first page of Google for any keyword have a core group of words on the page. Obviously Google is silent on this but it just means that its algorithm in ranking requires a website to contain Latent Semamtic Indexing but Andy calls it “theming”.

He tells us that one of the clearest signs that he believes Google uses LSI or theming in ranking a website is that in many of our searches in Google for a particular keyword, Google shows that this keyword has millions of such pages. Yet when you actually scroll down to the last page it is usually much lesser. He tested for one keyword phrase “blood sugar spike” which Google knows about 48 million pages but only recognized 500 pages. His conclusion. Google could only find 500 pages that meet the LSI or themed keyword criteria it expects to see. The rest of the 48 million pages – well they most likely go to their supplementary index. Take a look at the image below and you will understand better:

Well coming back to my own Authority Website:

So far I have written only themed content articles of about 8 pages over 5 silo’ed categories and they are all long articles of more than 1000 pages each. All these articles use keyword phrases ranging from 1, 2, 3 and 4 keywords and each article contains at least 50 different keyword phrases belonging to the top 10 websites that Google ranks on its page one.

So when I get the traffic coming to visit my website, I do not know which particular keyword phrase brings it here, nor do I care.  I could if I wanted to by installing Google Analytics but chose not to as I am too busy to over-analyse these things so long as I get the traffic.

Well you don’t have to buy the Web Content Studio if it does not serve your purpose at the moment. However for the time being you could just give it some thought and write themed word articles knowing that Google uses it to rank your website. Food for thought!

Well this post sort of marks my achievement of the second goal I had set for myself (the first being to surpass the $100 adsense per month needed to get the monthly check from Google). The second goal I had set for myself was achieving a daily adsense income of $10 per day. Not something to shout about for most adsense gurus I know, but for me it has taken a whole 14 months to ‘break the duck’.  So I’m experiencing a mixed feeling of relief, ‘wow’, ‘almost lost belief in myself’ all rolled into one. Last month (Oct) my adsense income was close to $450 which averages out to about $15 per day.

You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to tell that Oct appears like  the month that something fantastic must have happened since it registered a 70 percent increase from Sep and all the previous months never once crossed $300 before. So what happened and what broke the duck.

There is nothing secret but….

I focused on just 3 websites that were making the most money and plan out just one key strategy that I learned from Lisa Parmley. From what I learned from Lisa, she started making real money on adsense when she decided she just could not focus effectively on more than 20 sites and she made a conscious decision then to select randomly just 3 sites to promote and rank well in the search engines. And like they say, the rest was history.

I sort of just borrowed her idea but instead of selecting any 3 sites, I identified 3 of my best sites that fall under the 80:20 rule. 20 percent of my total sites that contributed to 80 percent of my total adsense earnings. Then I started work.  I took much effort to build these sites to at least 10 pages per site, with each site targeting a couple of good keywords. Now what makes my method different from Lisa’s is that while she started outsourcing (and spending thousands of money) to promote her new pages and doing much link building to get them highly ranked, I realize I just could not do this, not yet anyway.

Well I settled for the next best thing to do – I still created these 10 pages for the 3 sites with each page highly optimized but the massive link building will just have to wait. My additional web pages included a good combination of very highly competitive keywords with high paying keywords and low competitive keywords with average paying keywords. My main objective of having these additional pages is to give my visitors more information when they arrived at the site and I didn’t focus on ranking highly on the search engine – not yet then. That would be my next phase. Ultimately this approach helped to increase the quantity of clicks on the 3 targeted niche sites because many visitors checked out my new pages too.


The lesson you can take away here is that  some of these keywords I had optimized for helped to get better adsense returns because of higher cost per click I had selected from spyfu.com. This works well only because most of my 21 sites are ranking well and there is already traffic coming to these sites. You need enough traffic arriving at your home page to attract these visitors to the 10 additional pages. You can say that as of now, traffic is being channeled to these pages from the search engines but relying much on the keyword phrases of the homepage and not the 10 other pages.

Static HTML site or WP-Blogs Better?

About half of my sites are static html sites using the X-factor theme and I created them using my x-sitepro2 and the rest are created using WordPress blogs. I have to say each type has its own advantage. HTML sites look more professional and you can easily grow them to become authority sites, if you wish. WordPress blogs however are much easier to maintain because of the many free plugins that make them almost run on auto-pilot.

If there is one disadvantage I found in using blogs for my niche sites is that because it runs on auto-pilot, I tend to lose a little focus in terms of the linking work or optimizing new pages for more new keyword phrases. Yes the seeds of complacency sowing.

So who wins-  static sites or blogs? Well the 3 most profitable sites are all static html sites so I’m sure you can draw your own conclusion.

One Page site or Many Pages site better?

I have to say when I first started creating micro niche sites, my goal was to create as many of them as possible with just one page, excluding the default privacy policy, about, sitemap, etc of course. Over time I learned that this is not only risky but they cannot fulfill my primary objective of giving more information to the visitors.

Risky - Even if you have the best content with topic relevancy, just how much can you convince Google that your page is not a MFA(made for adsense) and from the grapevine, the big G seems to have untold mandate to ‘track and detroy MFA’ sites. Yeah and don’t forget Google outsources such work to humans, possibly out in India or the Philippines (nothing personal against them) to do this job so ‘mistakes’ can and will happen sometimes. You really don’t want to be at the wrong place at the right time do you?

User Experience - I don’t think any user searching for some specific information will find everything he needs on a one page website.  This is because your ads may not be totally relevant (depends on how many advertisers for the keyword phrase too) sometimes due to your own doing – if your article is not keyword-optimized. Secondly if your niche is relatively big, your one page article lacks the information or solution that he is searching for.

Niche Websites-Create 100 sites or 3 sites with 100 pages better?

Well if you read Lisa’s Truth Files, she is one living example of someone who made $10,000 in a month from just 3 high powered, highly ranked websites with 100′s of pages. That certainly quashed my belief for some time that you need to create more websites if you want to make more money in adsense. It’s an eye-opener for me.

My Next Step

I’ve just completed my initial stage where I’ve driven traffic mostly to my homepage for each of my niche sites. My next phase is to focus on the next 5 keyword phrases found in the sub-pages for my top 3 money making websites;  get them ranked on Google’s Page 1. When this is achieved it means that traffic to these pages will come from 2 sources, the first from the homepage and the second from search engines due to their page one ranking.

If like me, you have been doing Internet Home Business for some time, I bet you probably have some PLR articles lying around. Yes probably abandoned, forgotten and collecting cyber dust or cyber cobweb in your computer? Well why don’t you start to make good use of it for your home business blog, niche marketing or whatever you do that requires article writing?

Although on some occasions you buy PLR articles, most time you can get them for free. But most people used them only for a short while and stopped. Why? Well it’s too tedious even to just publish them even if you know they can provide useful resource to benefit your home business. But here is a good tip I’m going to share with you that I have been using. You can even automate the process – well sort of.

How Should You Use PLR articles on your blog?

Now as you know I create lots of micro niche websites and I write quite a bit to update the content of these websites. I used a lot of information from these free PLR articles, although I don’t use them “as is” – I rewrite them. You must know these same articles have been used by hundreds of people as they published on their websites. You won’t get into trouble with Google for putting   content on your blog that has been published elsewhere, as we know this is a myth.However you won’t get much benefit either because your content is deemed as not unique. Moreover you lose Google’s trust in your website when you do this. That’s possibly a greater sin for us Internet Marketers don’t you think?

How I used Free PLR articles for my niche websites

Step 1 – Go search for your free PLR articles. Simply go to Google and do a search for ‘your keyword + PLR’

Step 2. Sign in to your Blogger Blog and go to ‘New Post’

Step 3. Copy and paste your PLR article and use the title and body exactly “as is” for the time being. Don’t publish yet.

Step 3. Go to ‘Post Options’ at the bottom of the page. Under ‘Post date and time’, click ‘Schedule at’ and put a later date

Step 4. Now this is the step that requires some work from you. Rewrite your post title and body text to make it unique. You can choose to do this work anytime before your published date.

Step 5. Your scheduled posts get published at your scheduled dates automatically and run like clockwork.

Does this method work?

Yes absolutely. But only if you are a little disciplined and try to follow a fixed routine like re-writing your PLR articles daily, weekly, monthly and setting your scheduled dates to suit this time frame. Try to find what’s best for you that works and stick to a routine.

Why I used this method

• Well I have 20 niche sites and free PLR articles provide a good resource for my sites as I need to increase content and update them regularly.
• For some of my niche sites, just re-writing them is quite easy as the topics are usually simple as I target mostly product niches. It’s a lot easier than rewriting contents for ‘Internet Marketing’, ‘How to make money blogging’ that kind of stuff.
• Because Google owns Blogger – that’s a good reason
• I used it for good link building for all my niche sites

Final Thoughts

Using free PLR articles can serve your home business well if you learn how to do it right. Working at home takes a lot of your time as your Internet Business grows so learning a thing or two about automating your processes can really help.
