We are now all aware that Google recently updated its algorithms to the benefits of some and the downfall of others.

If there was one simple way of summarizing the major changes made by Google it would be to say that Google is looking for results as “natural” as possible.

Perfect is not Natural

Imperfection is the name of the game. Clearly doing great SEO work be it on site or off site certainly helps a lot; yet doing too much of it can hurt you too!

I don’t think I need to elaborate much on on-site over-optimization, most of you probably have heard about that recently.

You know, when you place too many keywords too well located in a too consistent manner on your page, it triggers a signal to Google that you are doing something with the intention of influencing the search engine ranking.

Google doesn’t like that at all, and before you know it, you could be relinquished to the rank of a spammer… not so good.

This is why your on-site optimization should have some flaws, not major ones of course, but your optimization shouldn’t be “perfect”.

One major trigger is often the abuse of keyword in ALL the “alt” text of your pictures. Sometimes having a link to the home page labeled “Home” may just work better for you than a nicely optimized “Make Money Online” in this regard.

Off Site Over Optimization

If most of you are aware of on-site over-optimization, I’m pretty sure however that you hardly ever think of off-site over-optimization.

We all know (though I hope you do by now) that off-site optimization is probably the most important factor in calculating your ranking position in the search engines.

It’s all about inbound links and their anchor text.

Getting a lot of inbound links is great and getting them with powerful anchor text is even better, but like for on-site optimization, too many good things become a bad thing because it’s not “natural”.

Unnatural Link Growth

Google is very wary about abnormal link growth. Sure enough, your exponential link growth could be due to your excellent marketing skill or use of a viral marketing tool and in such case you shouldn’t worry too much thanks to the new upcoming link velocity algorithm.

On the other hand, if your work has been “enhanced” by joining one of those programs that will get you 10,000 links instantly, or even simply 100 (depending of your usual link growth rate), you’ll trigger a red flag signal to Google.

I know, if you are really conscious about your site and your SEO this is relatively unlikely to happen but nonetheless I have to mention it to you.

However, what comes next is an entire different story…

Anchor Text Abuse

Ah… the so ever famous anchor text… people use it and abuse it over and over.

Depending on what anchor text is used, we know that a site can rank very differently for given keywords. This is why it’s very important to choose your anchor text very carefully.

So, what is a “natural” anchor text?

A “natural” anchor text would be anything that people would normally use to refer to you or your site. The most common choices are your brand name (if you have one), your name, or your website name.

Now you have to agree with me that someone you don’t know is very unlikely to link to you referring your site by writing something like:

“I recently came across this great site [link]refinance your mortgage, mortgage for all, instant refinancing for student and unemployed[/link] about mortgage financing.”

Instead, the anchor texts are more likely to be something like:

• “I recently came across this great site [link]http://www.example.com[/link] about mortgage financing.”

• “I recently came across this great site [link]Finatec[/link] about mortgage financing.”

• “I recently came across this great site about mortgage financing by [link]John Doe[/link].”

• “I recently came across this great [link] mortgage financing site[/link] by John Doe.”

If more than 10-20% of your anchor text links are optimized ones instead of the more “natural” ones, you may raise again a red flag and may get the value of those backlinks devalued too.

This is another cause of loss of PageRank recently alongside with the “unnatural link exchanges” devaluation.

In Conclusion

SEO is very important for your site, and I’m aware that you are conscious about it. Being penalized for over-optimization doesn’t mean that you are a spammer; it just states that you are trying too hard.

So keep in mind, too much good is bad when it comes to SEO with Google.

Keep things natural and allow yourself not to be optimized all the time for everything everywhere!

Zimbio (PR6)

It is a social networking site that allows you to find out about the latest topics that appeal to you, but more importantly for me, it promotes and syndicates two of my home business blogs and getting valuable backlinks, and traffic at the same time. That this is a PR6 just makes me wonder why I didn’t discover this site much earlier. Here, take a look at my Zimbio page

Wikidot (PR 7)

According to Wikipedia A Wiki is a type of website that allows users to add, remove, or otherwise edit and change most content very quickly and easily. Here is one wiki I made and link to my website and blog using my keywords I’m ranking: http://work-from-home-ideas.wikidot.com/

Scribd (PR 7)

Write a keyword optimized post and include your main keywords to your website or work at home blog. Then upload it to Scribd. How’s that for simplicity. The good thing about this site is that it has a page rank of 7 and your newly created page gets visited by Google bots and other search engines like Yahoo, MSN all the time. Although my primary interest is SEO ranking, I am getting some traffic too. Since my page was created less than a month ago, I have received 118 views. Nothing to gloat about but then, that’s just a bonus I didn’t plan for so I’m not complaining. Well take a look at my document I uploaded here to see how it looks.

Squidoo (PR8)

Don’t forget your favorite Squidoo lens. There has got to be some truth when I hear just too many bloggers and friends swear how much good their favorite Squidoo lenses have done for them. Could this be a reason why these same people are able to occupy top position at Google despite having chosen highly competitive keywords. Or could it be Google for some unknown reasons just love Squidoo so much or  Squidoo has a way of dominating Google. Well for any scientific proof or another case study, that will have to wait for another post. But for now it may be a good idea to just write a few Squidoo lenses and link to your sites and blogs. EBay (PR8)

If you’ve missed my post on how to get a free backlink from eBay, you can read it here again. This eBay blog was started 2 months ago specifically for link building purposes and as such I’ve exchanged many links with other bloggers on this page. Hopefully this will increase my page rank over time but for now my efforts have helped this ebay blog get to Google’s page 2 for the search term ‘work at home ideas‘.

Free WordPress Blog (PR9)

The biggest advantage of using the Free WordPress Blog, besides that it’s free, is the known fact that having links from different IP addresses is really good for SEO as they are deemed natural linking. So get yourself a free WordPress blog and start linking to your website and blog using your keywords. The good thing about having another WordPress blog is that you’ll enjoy the obvious benefits since all WordPress blogs are of great value. This new blog just got it’s PR1 with the December 2008 Google PR update. Since I first posted about my keyword phrase “Work From Home Ideas” made it to Google Top 10 one month ago, it has remained in this position. Since then, I have had another keyword phrase “Work At Home Ideas” too making it to Google Top 10. I like to think that getting lots of free backlinks certainly feature in my link building strategy, which has in some small ways made this possible in getting a good search engine ranking.

How well do you know about Google penalties? Don’t you agree we sometimes worked too hard in our work at home business and may have overlooked its relevance and importance. Well if like me, you may not have an easy time juggling with just too much work on your hands, coupled with a day job that sucks your life away. The last thing you really want to worry about is incurring the wrath of God Google, who when applying the fullest extent of its power, can make you lose your pagerank or the ultimatum – de-indexing your website. Two weeks ago, I had the Google penalty. Or did I?

Two weeks ago all my main keywords that I ranked, specifically ‘work at home ideas‘, and ‘legitimate home internet business‘ lost their usual page 3 SERP from Google. On checking further, they were nowhere in sight not even in hundred positions. I think I got the dreaded Google penalty.

Conduct Test for Google Penalty

1. Check that the number of urls Google previously indexed your website remains the same. (I used this tool, Website Grader and found out I had the same number of urls indexed)
2. Did you link to any “bad” sites. Check your outbound links to determine if you may have inadvertently linked to sites on gambling, casino, porn, link farms, doorway pages. (I used Bad Neighborhood detection tool and found a handful of suspects and deleted them immediately. Do take note that this tool though useful for this purpose, may not be perfect as it’s selection criteria uses keywords associated with such “problem sites”. So a perfectly legitimate home internet business whose webmaster includes the word ‘sexy’ in the post title may be flagged out too.)
3. Have you over-optimized your website, a technique sometimes used by others in aggressive link building using the same anchor text keywords instead of having a good variety of the main keywords. ( I have followed a very clean link building strategy after having written my 5-part link building strategy blog series. Read up Matt Cutt’s warning about possible penalty on keyword stuffing.)
4. Do you buy or sell links? Everyone is familiar with Google’s stand on the buying and selling of backlinks. As it firmly promotes a more natural link building within the blogosphere, such penalties can be expected for companies and others who blatantly do this. ( I don’t buy links but I do sell text links on this blog. I wouldn’t be concerned about selling ad space on your own website without a 3rd party, as there is no way a search engine could track this)
5. Automated Page redirect – Bloggers using JavaScript automated re-directs often result in Google penalties as these pages are perceived to be doorway pages.(I don’t practice this)
6. Have you done too much reciprocal linking: Google’s algorithm may activate its filters when there are incidents of unnatural backlinks accumulation through excessive reciprocal links exchange using the same anchor text links.( I avoid reciprocal link exchange focusing more on one-way and three way linking)

What You Can Do When You Get The Google Penalty

1. If you really have the Google penalty, you should contact Google to find what really you have done wrong or contravened their bible Google Webmaster Guidelines.
2. Correct your website problems e.g. keyword over optimization. If this penalty has caused you losing your page rank, Google may take a couple of months before your page rank is restored.
3. If your website has been de-indexed by Google, correct your problems immediately and submit a Google re-inclusion request.

My brush with God Google ended as sudden as it came, after 4 traumatizing days. Fortunately I did not get slapped with a Google penalty although I think Google algorithm may have a clever way getting my utmost attention to a ‘what if’ scenario. The two possible reasons I think this happened were because firstly I failed to update my website within the 17-day frequency, something which I have written about before. Secondly I was not doing enough in backlink accumulation. That said, my SERP came back to page 3 positions for ‘work at home ideas‘ and ‘legitimate home internet business‘ and I was relieved. Even my ‘Squidoo Secrets‘ keyword resumed it’s page 1 ranking. As they say, after bitterness, sweetness follows.
