Could a 5 day old blog post achieve No.1 Top Ranking in Google? Well I didn’t think so until now. As much as I am as curious as you, I figured I might as well try to find out what could have contributed to this search ranking phenomenon. I might be able to uncover something interesting just fresh from my last Case Study: What Google Looked For In My Last 5 Posts.

My recent post in question is Try My Cheap Link Building Service published on  Sep 8, 2011. It achieved Google No. 1 Position just 5 days after being published and now hovers between No. 1 and No. 3 spots in Google. I had expected it to do the Google dance and then go away but it didn’t and I thought why not just go figure that out. Yes even it gets pushed down the SERPs much later.  I like now to do a quick case study and provide my own take as to what may have contributed to this unexpected search ranking.

The Statistics: for the Keyword “Cheap Link Building Service”

1. Global Search Count (Monthly) : 1000 2. Strength of Competition (Micro Niche Finder) : 103 (> 50 is relative high competition) 3. Inanchor Count: 205:  Intitle Count: 154; Inurl Count : 122

Permalink Chosen: ../cheap-link-building-service

Keyword “cheap link building service” on first sentence of  first paragraph.

Here’s My Thoughts Why It Got No. 1 Top Ranking In Google:

1. I studied all the 10 sites on page 1 for the keyword phrase ‘cheap link building service‘. I found that non of my competitors had the exact permalink as the keyword as I did. Good thing that I had purposely put the blog title as ‘Try My Cheap Link Building Service’ and made the permalink as ‘Cheap Link Building Service’. It’s a powerful SEO I learned from all the ebooks I bought.

2. The blog title must contain the keyword you want to rank. The shorter this keyword the better too as it is more keyword optimized.

3. My homepage displays the keyword phrase “cheap link building service’. Once on the navigation link on the header (no-follow) and the other on the right side bar (do-follow). I wrote about this technique a long time ago.

4. I did not do any extensive link building. Just used my favorite plugin and put the keyword “cheap link building service” as a “backlink” in the plugin admin page so as to display this url across hundreds of blogs. Check my post on this amazing plugin: I Got Google Page 1 Overnight Using This Plugin and how this is easily done.

5. Except for one site having the same domain age, all other sites were much newer. The conclusion I can draw is that the older the domain the better chance you get in achieving top ranking in Google.

6. There were 5 other sites that have higher page rank than my page which just means that page rank is not as important as other factors when you want a top ranking in Google like Google no. 1 position. It just gives you about 20 percent added advantage.

7. It just reaffirms what we already know and that Google still uses exact named domain (keyword) as a critical factor in determining Top Ranking In Google.

For a long time, I used to think that only big commercial companies who have an online presence get Google Sitelinks. I was wrong. Even my home business blog may one day display these links continuosly too courtesy of the big G, I’ll come to that soon.

Just What are Google Sitelinks

Well for that I Google a couple of sites which are closer to home like HP Singapore and Sony Singapore. If you don’t already know just what Google Sitelinks are, well the image I took below will tell you just that:

Google Sitelinks are a collection of some related links of a website being searched and appears below the result of this website. Obviously Google has an algorithm that randomly and automatically select and display to the visitor. That’s another reason why it remains such a formidable search engine. And obviously only Google knows and is keeping it mum as in all other hundreds of their Google algorithms. But in this post, I’ve done a little research to try to decipher and arrive at some intelligent guessing.

How Can You Get Google Sitelinks For Your Site

1. Google mostly displays sitelinks only if your website is seen to be consistently ranking as the #1 keyword for the searched keyword.

2. Age seems to be a consideration factor by Google. Your website must be older than 2 years old. I have yet to see a new website get Google Sitelinks.

3. As Google No. 1 position, we would expect the keyword phrase to generate lots of searches and therefore this is another consideration. So you can expect any of your keywords that are not ranking on Google Page 1 let alone No. 1 position will not have any sitelinks displayed.

4. Given that in any website or blog, you may have numerous keyword phrases being targeted for ranking. However my take is that Google only looks at your main keywords and ignore all others including those long tail keywords as well.

Proof That A Blog Can Get Google Sitelinks

Well this blog called Smart Passive Income is a blog I found that Google has chosen to display Sitelinks. I should know because we have a common ranking keyword – passive income ideas. However though my home business blog does get Google sitelinks but not as often as this blogger’s. From what I know this blog is an authority blog that earns a five figure online income monthly.

Obviously when you get Google Sitelinks it can bring you more visitors, more clicks and more sales. So in summary to get to this desired outcome, make sure your main keywords are ranking not just on Google Page One but Google No. 1 Spot. Get more visitors by removing your Description Tag!
Internet marketing is all about making sales online, and there’s no secret that the more visitors you get to your site the higher are your chances to make a sale, right? Of course there are many ways and tactics for you to increase your exposure and to attract more visitors to your site.

One common way is definitely using the traffic from organic search results, more particularly from Google.

Now, did you know that despite your best SEO efforts, even if you are currently enjoying a top ranking in Google, you are potentially losing a lot of visitors?

That’s right, if your on-page optimization does include Meta tags such as “Meta Keywords” and “Meta Description” I can guarantee you that you are losing traffic because of them!

Meta Keywords are no longer used in SEO, this is an old practice that is more harmful than beneficial considering that not only the Meta Keywords don’t give you anymore additional value and that misuse of them my get you penalized for over-optimization… not to mention all the hard work you did to find those rare keywords, why on earth would you want to advertise them to everybody?

Meta Keywords are a small deal; the real thing comes with your Meta Description.

Meta Description was first used to compensate the inability of the search engines to fully comprehend what your site was about… that was a long time ago. Now, not only Google is able to analyze your content from within your page, your entire site, but also your linking network, it is especially capable to select the most appropriate snippets of your content to match a search query.

If you are like most of the folks out there and your pages are still optimized the old fashion way, your content is probably optimized around one good keyword only and you have prepared a killer description to invite all the people to click on your search result.

That was fine before, but things have changed in SEO and in the web users’ behavior.

People no longer search for one keyword or even a two words search term! They are entering much longer sentences or questions; and Google is acknowledging this behavior by extending its suggested snippets lengths.

That’s a big deal for you with your short keywords, because now visitors are looking for more long tail keywords with the direct help of Google. This means that you are very likely to be skipped over.

And what if you still appear in the search results? You’ll appear for a search term you did not optimized for and what happened to your magical page description?

That’s right; it will still be displayed seamlessly regardless of the search term entered!

Now, if you have any bit of experience in internet marketing, you’ll know how important it is to fine tune your ads and that any small change can make a huge difference; so let me ask you:

What are you doing by showing the same response message to people regardless of their queries?

By removing your Meta Description, you allow Google to select the most appropriate parts of your content in order to formulate the most targeted and relevant description to the search as possible.

This would means that instead of having a page optimized for 1 keyword, your page is now optimized for unlimited keywords combination within your page content!

How well do you know about Google penalties? Don’t you agree we sometimes worked too hard in our work at home business and may have overlooked its relevance and importance. Well if like me, you may not have an easy time juggling with just too much work on your hands, coupled with a day job that sucks your life away. The last thing you really want to worry about is incurring the wrath of God Google, who when applying the fullest extent of its power, can make you lose your pagerank or the ultimatum – de-indexing your website. Two weeks ago, I had the Google penalty. Or did I?

Two weeks ago all my main keywords that I ranked, specifically ‘work at home ideas‘, and ‘legitimate home internet business‘ lost their usual page 3 SERP from Google. On checking further, they were nowhere in sight not even in hundred positions. I think I got the dreaded Google penalty.

Conduct Test for Google Penalty

1. Check that the number of urls Google previously indexed your website remains the same. (I used this tool, Website Grader and found out I had the same number of urls indexed)
2. Did you link to any “bad” sites. Check your outbound links to determine if you may have inadvertently linked to sites on gambling, casino, porn, link farms, doorway pages. (I used Bad Neighborhood detection tool and found a handful of suspects and deleted them immediately. Do take note that this tool though useful for this purpose, may not be perfect as it’s selection criteria uses keywords associated with such “problem sites”. So a perfectly legitimate home internet business whose webmaster includes the word ‘sexy’ in the post title may be flagged out too.)
3. Have you over-optimized your website, a technique sometimes used by others in aggressive link building using the same anchor text keywords instead of having a good variety of the main keywords. ( I have followed a very clean link building strategy after having written my 5-part link building strategy blog series. Read up Matt Cutt’s warning about possible penalty on keyword stuffing.)
4. Do you buy or sell links? Everyone is familiar with Google’s stand on the buying and selling of backlinks. As it firmly promotes a more natural link building within the blogosphere, such penalties can be expected for companies and others who blatantly do this. ( I don’t buy links but I do sell text links on this blog. I wouldn’t be concerned about selling ad space on your own website without a 3rd party, as there is no way a search engine could track this)
5. Automated Page redirect – Bloggers using JavaScript automated re-directs often result in Google penalties as these pages are perceived to be doorway pages.(I don’t practice this)
6. Have you done too much reciprocal linking: Google’s algorithm may activate its filters when there are incidents of unnatural backlinks accumulation through excessive reciprocal links exchange using the same anchor text links.( I avoid reciprocal link exchange focusing more on one-way and three way linking)

What You Can Do When You Get The Google Penalty

1. If you really have the Google penalty, you should contact Google to find what really you have done wrong or contravened their bible Google Webmaster Guidelines.
2. Correct your website problems e.g. keyword over optimization. If this penalty has caused you losing your page rank, Google may take a couple of months before your page rank is restored.
3. If your website has been de-indexed by Google, correct your problems immediately and submit a Google re-inclusion request.

My brush with God Google ended as sudden as it came, after 4 traumatizing days. Fortunately I did not get slapped with a Google penalty although I think Google algorithm may have a clever way getting my utmost attention to a ‘what if’ scenario. The two possible reasons I think this happened were because firstly I failed to update my website within the 17-day frequency, something which I have written about before. Secondly I was not doing enough in backlink accumulation. That said, my SERP came back to page 3 positions for ‘work at home ideas‘ and ‘legitimate home internet business‘ and I was relieved. Even my ‘Squidoo Secrets‘ keyword resumed it’s page 1 ranking. As they say, after bitterness, sweetness follows.

While we search for newer technological link exchange breakthrough for our work at home business, surpassing the likes of our current linking softwares, automated [tag-tec]link exchange[/tag-tec] programs, or that popular Link Machine in your website, we often neglect an easier way of doing it. It’s akin to developing a product but the bio products turned out unexpectedly and better than you’ve ever imagined. What’s this goose that lays you the golden eggs?

1. Link Exchange – Your Inside Pages

The open secret of the importance of Inside Pages, was revealed and documented by 2 college students 10 years ago who later co-founded Google. In terms of SEO and specifically link building, this means that besides linking your work at home main page with other bloggers, you ought to include your Inside Pages in your linking and link exchange efforts. More details in Link Building Strategy-Deep Links-Part 1.

How to find out page rank of your inside pages
In order to be able to exchange your links with other bloggers, you will firstly have to determine how good your pages are. How valuable or link exchange worthy are your inside pages and how can you tell? Well there are two ways of getting the same results. The first is the old fashion way by using your familiar page rank checker or the Google pagerank toolbar if you have already installed on your computer. The second is what I recommend, an automated tool that shows you all your inside pages by their pagerank just by typing your work at home business website url. All it takes is one minute and you have this complete list, hopefully some with very good ranking and you’re almost ready for link exchange.

2. Establish Business Relationships

You may argue that forming business partnerships is time consuming. But then again who says SEO or link building is fast. I’m sure just keeping it in mind and over time, building your home internet business network can be achieved and something that comes naturally if you asked me.

As a start as you embark on this link exchange program, you should communicate with those you are in constant dialogue with including your work at home business partners, friends, favorite webmasters, your top commentators in your blog. If you stop for a moment to think this through you may be pleasantly surprised at how many people you’ve got on hand.

3. Determine a Fair Exchange Link Placement

It is good to establish what you think is a fair exchange of links among the interested bloggers who wish to conduct link exchanges with you. The most obvious determinant usually is your page rank and whether the link is from your home page or inside pages. It should also include what you deem as a fair exchange when you do 2-way link exchanges as opposed to 3-way link exchanges.

4. Review My Blog

My recent post ‘Review My Blog Get Free Linkback‘ is actually a link exchange between two bloggers. This post invites bloggers to post a simple review in their blogs but linking to my post and my website. In return I link back to this blog by writing a ‘My Review Post‘. Both parties also agree on the specific anchor text to be used for obvious [tag-tec]SEO ranking[/tag-tec] benefits.

5. Exchange Articles

You can exchange blog posts with other bloggers in similar niche markets. However to prevent duplication content issues, I would recommend not using a full post. I would suggest writing a short synopsis of the topic and followed with (for example) “Here are 20 Ways to make 100 Dollars per day online” link to the blog instead of “Read More Here” link. By the way this is good for SEO linking technique, which probably deserves another post for discussion.
