A work at home business is a dream of many people, especially these days considering the financial crises we are going through and a really down job market. Working at home offers a lot of great benefits beside the obvious ones.

Some of the best positive aspects of working from home include, not having to spend money on gas commuting to and form work, having more free time to spend with your family and doing the things you love to do, having the freedom to work whenever you want and of course the biggest one being your own boss and not having to answer to anyone. Unfortunately, some of these positives like working whenever you like and not having to answer to a boss, may effect your home business negatively if not checked and under control.

One of the biggest challenges of having a “work at home” business is keeping a plan and a regular schedule. Most people who work at home, face many distraction and obstacles. Many people think because you work at home, you don’t follow any rules. In many cases, family and friends will constantly distract you and expect you to play along. With all these obstacles and distractions, it is hard to stay focused and get things done. However, there are things you can do to make your work at home a bit more like an actual job. Things that will help you get more things done and achieve your business goals. Here are 5 tips to help you do just that:

Plan your work day

Take 10 minutes every morning (or if you prefer do it at the end of the day for the next day)Make a simple daily schedule and note everything that needs to get done that day. That will help you stay online and focused while avoiding distractions.

Go through with it

When it comes to work at home businesses, making a plan isn’t that hard, it only takes a few minutes, sticking with the plan is the hard part. But, if you want to succeed, it is necessary to stick with the plan. Do your best to stick with your daily schedule. However, in some occasions you may find it hard to go with the plan, don’t be so hard on yourself. Give yourself a break here and there. And remember, not everything goes as planned always!

Keep motivating yourself

Motivation is one of the biggest factors when it comes to having a good work day and accomplishing all the daily tasks. And since you work at home, that means, you are the one who has to keep you motivated and going. A simple way to keep yourself motivated is to keep things that are motivating to you, close by, on your desk perhaps. Write down your biggest goal and keep it in your desk where you can look at it every time you feel down. Keep a copy of that book that inspired you to start this business. Anything that you can look at and get motivation from.

Treat it as a real business

Just because you are your own boss and work from home doesn’t mean your work is not important. Your work at home business still is a business and like any other business, it needs to be dealt with as a business and not a hobby.

Set working hours

Working at the comfort of your own home has its benefits and of course its pitfalls. Using those benefits to your advantage and avoiding those pitfalls will be an important part of where or not you succeed in working from home.

Building and maintaining a successful and profitable home business requires a lot of hard work, commitment and a willingness to never give up, but most importantly, it requires a laser like focus. By implementing these tips you can ensure your home business is on the right track to becoming and staying a profitable and successful business you can rely on.

Juggling Self-employment and Family Demands

There is something incredibly special about being able to work from home. There’s a sense of freedom – a sense of flexibility. At the end of the day, though, those of us who really do work from home know that freedom and flexibility can only occur if our schedules reflect just a little bit of structure. The hardest part about quitting my full-time job to become a full-time freelance writer was helping my friends and family members understand what it really means to work from home. Until that point, the only people I knew who “worked from home” were people who had office jobs and got to telecommute a couple of days per week – an altogether different animal.

Self-employed vs. Unemployed

Not long after I quit my full-time job, the phone calls started rolling in. Can you take your grandmother to the doctors? I need you to stop by the house and let the dog out for me. Do you want to go on a bus trip with us on Thursday? Can you pick your cousin up from school? All of the sudden, I was viewed as “available.” My family and friends didn’t think of me as self-employed. They knew nothing of working from home, looking for private clients, or setting their own schedules. They had a complete lack of regard and respect for my time and my work. They thought I didn’t work. They treated me like I was completely unemployed.

Making People Understand

This is where things get difficult for a lot of people who are self-employed. It doesn’t matter if you’re a writer, a graphic designer, an internet marketer, or in some other sort of business. Your biggest hurdle will involve making those around you understand your need for structure.

What does this mean?

It means not making yourself available to others 24/7. Set “office hours” for yourself and stick to them as much as possible. You obviously own the flexibility to change those hours as you see fit, but you’ll not only provide yourself with a little bit of structure but will help to draw boundaries that others aren’t welcome to cross. It will be a lot harder for your mother to call and ask you to run to the store if you don’t answer personal calls before noon; or if your friends know you are only free to go out to eat on Fridays.

It means learning to say no. It’s a tiny word with a lot of power, and you have the right to use it. Your lack of formal employment in the corporate world does not mean you have the time to run around and do things for others all day long. What many of my own family members and friends did not understand at first was that I no longer have paid vacation time or personal days. I have to plan the days or hours I take off because if I am not working, I will not get paid. Period. End of story.

It means you need to be patient. It is going to take time for those who love you to gain a firm understanding of what you do. Be calm and respectful and explain your new work situation as clearly as you can. Be consistent with your boundaries and with the times you say “no” to certain requests. Before long, those around you will start treating you as they would if you were working a regular 9-5 office job.

As a self-employed professional you have the obligation to put yourself first at all times. Your success – personal and financial – rests on your ability to get your work done daily. There will be an adjustment period and you may feel a bit overwhelmed at times but before long you will have a stable routine you can stray from occasionally if you really need.

If getting backlinks is something you constantly do for your online business (and you should) that’s understandable. After all, backlinks play such an important role in our business and we seem to can’t stop doing enough of it ourselves; or buy backlink services sometimes so as to get our sites ranking well. Yet, often enough, they are the cause of many success stories as well as  the pain and struggles of many Internet Marketers trying to make the most out of their blogs or websites. We certainly can relate to all that at some point in time in our Internet Marketing journey. However, today, let’s take a step back to ask ourselves is what we have been doing good enough? Are we getting the just deserts for all the hard work done to acquire our backlinks? If not what else can we do.

A Link is Still a Link. Or is it?

It probably is true when you started your online business 5 years ago. However, in reality, things have changed so much and what was true then may not be relevant and good enough in today’s world. Yes 5 years ago, all you got to do is get yourselves tons of links for your website and you can outrank your competition. It’s now not that easy anymore and you probably know you have to ‘go with the flow’ and consider many other factors too. If you don’t then you lose out. I just have to remind you of some recent Google Algorithm changes to bring this point to you. Like the   Google’s Panda Update or the May Day Update. And don’t forget that Google makes more than 300 algorithm changes annually although not all big ones like these two but suffice to say, you must take actions. I have been following the Link Pyramid with good success so I like to share with you just how powerful this method of link building is: Base Links The foundation of your link pyramid are your base links. As with an actual pyramid, the foundation is the largest part of this virtual structure. You need more base links than any other kind of link. Base links are, for lack of better words, lower quality links. Links from things like lesser article sites, social bookmarking sites, blog comments, links from deep inner pages, etc. It’s important that you have a lot of these kinds of links, because Google’s algorithm thinks that this is “natural.” After all, how likely is it that a web site will have a bunch of super-high-quality links from major web sites and not have magnitudes more links from “lesser” sites? So you want to make sure your link pyramid has a solid foundation of these kinds of links.

Mid-Grade Links
The next level of our link pyramid are your mid-grade links. These are links from web sites that have more authority than the sites mentioned previously, but still may not be top-notch sites. The kind of sites that usually reuse EzineArticles content often fall into this category, as do links from mini-sites and sales letter sites.

Mid-grade sites have a fair amount of links aimed at them in their own right, and so Google sees links coming from them as being more individually valuable than the base links. Of course, that means that you don’t need as many links from these kinds of sites as you do from the base link sites.

Nor should you have more links from these kinds of sites than the base link sites. Remember, it’s all about looking “natural” in Google’s eyes.

Highest-Quality Links
For most long-tail keywords (keywords with less competition in the search engines), you don’t even need the top level in your link pyramid. You can usually rank just fine with the base links and mid-grade links. I have numerous sites ranking quite well for many nice keywords without any top-quality links.

However, when you’re aiming higher, you need to collect higher quality links. By “higher quality”, I mean links from sites that already have a lot of links aimed at them. In Google’s eyes, site with a lot of links aimed at them have “authority”, and anyone these “authority sites” link to must also be important.

The great thing about links from authority sites is that a few links can make a big difference. So while these links are more difficult to acquire, you don’t need nearly as many of them to rank well for your keywords. I’ve brought sites from page two for my keywords in Google to page one with just a dozen or two links of this kind (and I’m talking about some fairly competitive keywords).

Make It Look Natural
For best results your link pyramid should look natural to Google. So this means having a large number of base links, a lesser number of mid-grade links, and just a few top-quality links.

But don’t get too concerned if some of your links tend to belong to more than one category of link types. Don’t get too hung up on this because that adds to the “natural” that your link pyramid has become and that is what Google likes to see.

My Thoughts:

This is one reason why many of my 26 niche sites are ranking on Google’s page 1 without much effort because I used mostly high page rank profile links from Angela Edwards. Most times I don’t need to get too many high quality links for my sites unless they are those that are authority sites or when the competition is really outrageously high.

My first Authority Website that I started on Dec 31, 2010 now gets constant traffic and earns its first adsense click albeit only 81 cents after 2 weeks. But I am thrilled to say the least. Why?

Well here’s 5 reasons why before I go into a little more detail….

Because:

1. it is not ranking in any specific keywords in Google (yet) so where did the traffic come from you might ask?
2. my belief in John XFactor takes me to another level of success. Success has many steps and this is just the first step that clearly tells me that his Authority Site Adsense Guide works.
3. I took actions 15 months ago when I started building micro niche adsense sites.
4. I can now prove to people that the best thing I have learned from XFactor about starting an authority site is – that you do not need to focus too much on specific keywords for your website.
5. building an authority website is a worthwhile investment of time and little money.

How Much is my traffic

Since a week ago I am getting about 5 – 10 impressions a day when I see in my adsense admin. That to some people do not mean too much but for me I  look beyond the figures. I look at consistency and it’s daily impressions that I am getting for a new site that has only 8 pages. Authority site that is not even ranking in Google. So imagine when it has 80 pages, 800 pages – now that’s the big picture.

Where does the traffic come from?

Well that’s a good question too considering that most people (like I was) put off launching an authority website because they think they don’t stand a chance with all those well established players in their niche.

My traffic does not come from just one or two keyword or keyword phrases. Like they figured it out, I don’t stand a chance.

My traffic comes from……hundreds of keyword phrases but I don’t lose hair over backlinking and other conventional methods of getting each of these hundreds of keywords ranked. That would be an insurmountable feat to accomplish. The secret? I just write very long articles. Read up my last post titled : First Authority Website Launched|Enter Web Content Studio and you will know what I mean.

Now I don’t write long articles for the sake of making it lengthy. Foolhardy that would be. It’s just that I ensure each of my authority website article has all the keyword phrases that all the top 10 websites for my niche has – yes all of their web pages.

Writing Themed Articles Works

My method of writing themed content articles that I learned from Dr Andy Williams is working very well.  When you theme a page this automatically “optimizes” the page for long tail phrases. The reason I got interested in this technique is because Andy revealed why it has to work….because Google relies on it in their algorithms and here is the proof that you can read it too. Andy did extensive research on this subject and discovered that all the pages in the first page of Google for any keyword have a core group of words on the page. Obviously Google is silent on this but it just means that its algorithm in ranking requires a website to contain Latent Semamtic Indexing but Andy calls it “theming”.

He tells us that one of the clearest signs that he believes Google uses LSI or theming in ranking a website is that in many of our searches in Google for a particular keyword, Google shows that this keyword has millions of such pages. Yet when you actually scroll down to the last page it is usually much lesser. He tested for one keyword phrase “blood sugar spike” which Google knows about 48 million pages but only recognized 500 pages. His conclusion. Google could only find 500 pages that meet the LSI or themed keyword criteria it expects to see. The rest of the 48 million pages – well they most likely go to their supplementary index. Take a look at the image below and you will understand better:

Well coming back to my own Authority Website:

So far I have written only themed content articles of about 8 pages over 5 silo’ed categories and they are all long articles of more than 1000 pages each. All these articles use keyword phrases ranging from 1, 2, 3 and 4 keywords and each article contains at least 50 different keyword phrases belonging to the top 10 websites that Google ranks on its page one.

So when I get the traffic coming to visit my website, I do not know which particular keyword phrase brings it here, nor do I care.  I could if I wanted to by installing Google Analytics but chose not to as I am too busy to over-analyse these things so long as I get the traffic.

Well you don’t have to buy the Web Content Studio if it does not serve your purpose at the moment. However for the time being you could just give it some thought and write themed word articles knowing that Google uses it to rank your website. Food for thought!

Today Dec 31, 2010 is definitely a good day as it marked the day I launched my first Authority website. Yep, finally after a month of deliberating and doing some research as to how I should do this, I bought the necessary tools and blueprint, and I have today published my website and 4 “authority” pages.

Part II of my Adsense journey Begins

For those of you who remembered about 15 months ago I started my adsense journey and bought myself the now famous Micro Niche Adsense Course from XFactor as well as XsitePro, a powerful web building software and launched more than 20 niche sites during this time.

Well guess what…looks like history is about to repeat itself. Part II of my adsense journey begins officially today and I’m turning 3 of these niche sites into authority websites as well as adding a brand new health niche authority website. I’m still following XFactor (John)’s method only this time he just released his latest blueprint for ‘Advanced Adsense Publisher Guide to Making More Money With less sites‘. That’s perfect for me as I’ve recently stopped adding more niche sites and a few months ago already had thoughts of making a few of my sites to authority sites. I guessed John must have read my mind.

Why Authority Websites?

I’ll be perfectly honest with you. For a long time I was living under a misconception of what an authority website really is and who is fit to create one. I once thought that only the “big guns” or the more established marketers should be the ones since they already have the “authority tag” accorded to them. Not quite really as I found out recently.

Now I know an authority website need not be another CNN or Yahoo News nor must it be the most beautifully designed site. In short you and I could well launch an authority website within the next 1 week – if we wanted to that is. I’ve experienced some success in building niche sites and now building a few authority sites is just putting that icing on the cake. I called it a natural progression. It’s also called focusing on the long term, creating passive income and generally working towards making more money online only this time using few sites

Some Information about XFactor’s Authority Site Adsense Guide

It would be impossible to give a meaningful review of this advanced adsense blueprint without giving away all his techniques and that would be unethical so I won’t even go near there. So if whatever little information I could share with you may seem somewhat hard to comprehend, please excuse me and you would know why this is so.

It’s a very comprehensive book and John goes into great length to make his 217 pages book so easy to understand. It’s not an extension of his earlier book which I bought 15 months ago; it’s his second book. There are many tips that he gave but to me the most important thing I learned from him was how he makes creating authority websites so simple.He made it look simple because he teaches how to theme our articles as a part of his technique. He uses Web Content Studio to help find all the theme words for any articles we plan to write, articles that Google loves.

If you do not know what “theming an article is”, think LSI and long tail keywords to give you an idea. It’s also about how it will get you lots of traffic even if the keywords are highly competitive. So if you’ve been trained to believe you should only do keyword research and focusing on choosing keywords that have more traffic and less competition, that’s old school and a lot more difficult to do, I might add since everyone does that. With theming, it’s about less traffic as far as all the keyword tools tell you, insane competition but you still get lots of traffic all the same. It sounds a little hard to understand but the ebook will go into every great detail. It’s worth the $39 I paid for (first timer to his course pays $97).

I have just learned the proper way of ”siloing” my sites and that is not only good site structure for easy navigation on your site by your visitors, I’ve learned long ago it’s good for SEO too. Well that’s just a small part of what his Adsense Guilde teaches, the same techniques he uses to now make over $1000 per day.

How I Use Web Content Studio To Write Articles For My Authority Sites

This strategy is simple yet very powerful. When I first read about it, naturally I was simply amazed at this technique. I was hoping I could save some money not buying the tool and tried to do the work manually. The result – it’s too tedious and time consuming and at the end left me frustrated because I couldn’t check how well or badly I had done the “theming” process myself. And I can’t possibly do this for every article that I write. Well enter Dr Andy Williams’ Web Content Studio that cuts down 3 hours of research work to a mere few minutes. I relented, paid for this tool and now think this is the best tool I’ve ever come across.

With theme keywords strategy,I write my article relatively long – about 1000 words but with this tool, it’s really quite easy but you just follow a “process”.

What is Web Content Studio?

It contains a set of tools in a suite all under one big software application. This explains the name “studio” and all the tools are located on conveniently placed tabs that you can click to easily go to. So you have a scratchpad that has an auto “grabber” feature that copies whatever research work you choose from any website that you conveniently placed in your “bookmarks”, another tab in this software suite. Other tabs include ‘Editor”, ‘Researcher’, ‘Keywords’ and ‘Notes’.

These tools are cleverly thought of by Dr Andy Williams to help you research the keywords that Google expect from authority sites whenever you write your contents. So if you are planning to write an article on say “affiliate marketing”, this tool will query Google  for the phrase “affiliate marketing”, and visit all the relevant pages listed at the top 10 (you select how many) sites and extract for you all the theme words like “affiliate”, “network”, “advertising”, “commission:, “merchant” and theme phrases like “contextual advertising”, “revenue sharing”, “cost per action”, “compensation methods” used by these top 10 sites Google ranked.

Once you have these keywords presented in a report (again all shown in this “Studio”) the objective is to write your article (Editor tab) that includes all these theme words and theme phrases. How many and what words you used are really up to you (you just put a ’tick’ on these words) but in the manual that comes with your purchase of Web Content Studio, Andy explains and provides suggestions based on not just his theory but showing you his real live cases and the results achieved. The result is that you will learn just what it takes to write your best article with these theme words and phrases that Google expects to see.

Here is a quick summary of the process flow when I write each of my well themed articles (in WCS):

1. Create a blank article page
2. Do keyword research.
3. Clean the list using the compare against top 10 so you only get the most popular words in your final list of theme words.
4. Write your article.
5. Check theme of article.

I guess only you will have the answer. For me, because I write articles everyday either researching for my clients when writing their articles or I write for my top niche sites especially the 3 sites that I decided to make them authority sites. Many of us probably used Blogger or any web 2.0 websites for only one purpose – link building to boost the search engine rankings of any of our money making websites or make money blogging blogs. Well hopefully this post gives you some food for thought and perhaps you may have a different perspective or objective when you create your next blog in Blogger.

How did I start this niche in Blogger?

All my niche sites’ domains are self-hosted and I’ve never ever used Blogger or any free sites other than for link building purposes, so ranking it to no. 1 or Google’s’ page one is never in my mind. This is my very first niche site created in Blogger. One of my niche sites was ranked no. 5 in Google and I wanted to push it up to no. 1 so I thought having a similar niche site created in Blogger may help.

All my niche sites are using exact name domains as my main keyword phrase, so I was lucky to have also found the exact name in Blogger as well. Here’s all the information you will find useful:

Niche Site in Blogger (what I did in chronological sequence)

1.  Sep 8 - created niche site in Blogger with one post for the homepage. No links on the page but put adsense (it’s a strategy I learned and it worked)

2. Sep 9 – Google has indexed my blog (very much because of #1 strategy)

3. Sep 20 – published second post on the blog

4. Sep 29 – published third post on the blog

5. Sep 30 – I noted that the Sep 29 post has been indexed by Google. Now I start to update my 3 posts with 2 links on each post point to my niche site which has the same domain name as this blog name.

6. Nov 20 – Found site on Google’s page 2, #20 . Published 4th post and decided to put some life into the blog. Added 2 more adsense ads (1 block 336X280 and link unit468X15) and included one image with keyword in alt-text at the end of each post. Change header and ensure matching links color with adsense. That’s it.

7. Nov 21 (6.30 a.m) – Wanted to check if latest post was indexed but found much more than that. Found site on Google’s page 1, #1. Yeah and it outranked my other owned niche site now currently at #3, can you believe that? Almost side by site.  It looks a little strange – yes interestingly strange but absolutely wonderful. haha!

My Thoughts

1. Well whether the site will continue to remain at the no. 1 position, only time will tell (still no. 1 after 9 hrs so far at time of writing this post UPDATE: DEC 9 STILL @NO.1 IN GOOGLE) but that’s not too important. I still maintain that I will use Blogger more for link building and if any of these sites get good ranking in Google, it’s just a bonus.

2. Looks like I’ve completely missed out on using Blogger to my advantage for all my 21 niche sites. I ought to create a few more blogs in Blogger and hopefully I can find exact names as well. Anyway it’s going to be useful for any link wheel I may intend to selectively do for a few of my niche sites in the near future.

3. Gaining Google’s trust is so important when you start to build a new site. So in this niche site, my strategy not to show any links on my homepage before getting Google indexed worked because the big G dislikes people who creates blogger blogs solely for link building. In fact a few years ago I’ve had one or 2 general blogger blogs deleted because I failed to realize this importance or give due respect to G. With Google you can’t just be goody two shoes, you have to be genuinely good period.

4. The importance of using exact name domain is proven yet again here and  all my 21 niche sites followed this selection criteria during the keyword research and domain selection.

5. You don’t need many backlinks to get to Google’s no. 1 position as there are many other factors that are very important too as this case shows. I just checked Yahoo Site Explorer and it shows this blogger blog has only 7 backlinks mostly from my squidoo lenses.

So, you’ve decided to take yourself out of the rat race and embark on your own Internet home business venture. Good for you! It takes guts and a clear vision, but for those with enough courage to take the leap, the rewards can be great. Unfortunately, not everyone might have as firm a grasp on why you would want to start a home Internet business. Because people don’t understand your job, you’re going to be forced at every turn to defend yourself and your decision. If you prepare for people’s questioning, however, you can respond smartly and boost your own confidence in your endeavor.

So what do you do, anyway?

This is possibly the most common negative comment you’ll experience. It’s frustrating, because with any friend you know who works in an office, you wouldn’t ask, “what do you do in that office all day, anyway?” Because office work has been accepted by society, people don’t question it, even though it can often be very pointless. Instead of getting annoyed though, practice a standard response, basically a sales pitch for how great your business is. Write up a two or three sentence description of your business and what you do. Edit it and make it pop. Instead of mumbling, “uh, well, I write content for uh, a blog,” you’ll have a savvy, professional response that will dispel their doubts.

This is just a side gig, right?

People without the same courage and entrepreneurial spirit as you don’t understand how you could possibly quit a stable job to look for something better. If you want to shut them up quick, respond casually and cooly with, “Actually, once I get my websites going, I can make more money online than I ever could have at my old job.”

How can you possibly make any money doing that?

If you’re getting this question in the first place, your questioner probably isn’t familiar with how niche blogging and search engine optimization work. Maybe it’s coming from your Grandma or even your parents. Put your answer in simple terms: “If you have a website that’s popular because a lot of people are searching for your subject matter, you can make money in ad revenue.”

Isn’t that a bad career move?

People used to the traditional, inch your way up the corporate ladder career strategy don’t see how working for yourself can fit into your larger life picture. Depending on where you’re planning on taking your career, there are a couple of different ways to get them to rethink their comment. If you want to work for yourself for the rest of your life, simply respond by saying that your home business will grow more valuable over time, making you more and more secure as you get older. Or, you can tell them that the blogging skills you’ll learn will be very marketable, if you do decide you want a more conventional job later on.

So, do you just sit around in your pajamas all day?

Sometimes people will annoyingly assume that just because you work from home, it means you don’t work at all. Laugh casually and tell them the truth: “Now that I work for myself, I work harder than I ever did before!” Tell them how many hours you dedicate to your business, and how it’s much easier to stay busy when everything you accomplish is for your own benefit.

How can your tiny websites compete with all the huge ones on the Net?

If your great Aunt Sally has never been off of her Yahoo homepage, it might be difficult to explain to her about how many smaller websites there are out there. Give it a try though, explaining that niche sites have appeal because they don’t have all the noise of the bigger portals– they focus only on one thing people are looking for, and do it well.

Congratulations on taking the leap in starting your own home Internet business. While people will inevitably express doubts about your success, don’t listen–have faith in your own abilities and in the strength of your business plan. You know that what you’re doing is best for you, so don’t worry about everyone else.
