Well fast forward to today, in my recent visits to many blogs doing commenting, I could see many other bloggers’ web pages getting at least a PR1. I thought this seems somewhat unusual as such rankings seemed to show up only after an official Google PageRank has taken place.  So I thought I’ll do a quick case study on my own blog posts to see why this is so. Here’s what I found:

Case Study of last 5 Posts:

1. The 5 posts were published on Jul 31, Aug 4, Aug 10, Aug 14 and Aug 21 respectively.

2. Only 1 of the 5 posts had been given a PR1 while all others had PR0.

3. The post with PR1 followed some specific onpage SEO factors suggested by the SEO Jacking WP Plugin while all other 4 posts did not. The SEO onpage factors that I had diligently followed to the T were as follows:

4. No link building work was done on any of these 5 posts nor any promotion of these posts whatsoever.

Case Study Findings

Clearly, you can see how it is so simple to get Google PageRank by following some simple onpage SEO. Now obviously this means that Google places much importance on onpage SEO and its page rank algorithm includes some of these factors.

Final Thoughts

It looks like it is now relatively easy to get a PR1 for any web page and I like to think it’s because of the last Google Panda algorithm changes somehow. But this just helps to remind me to give Google what it wants in terms of onsite SEO.Similar Posts:

If getting backlinks is something you constantly do for your online business (and you should) that’s understandable. After all, backlinks play such an important role in our business and we seem to can’t stop doing enough of it ourselves; or buy backlink services sometimes so as to get our sites ranking well. Yet, often enough, they are the cause of many success stories as well as  the pain and struggles of many Internet Marketers trying to make the most out of their blogs or websites. We certainly can relate to all that at some point in time in our Internet Marketing journey. However, today, let’s take a step back to ask ourselves is what we have been doing good enough? Are we getting the just deserts for all the hard work done to acquire our backlinks? If not what else can we do.

A Link is Still a Link. Or is it?

It probably is true when you started your online business 5 years ago. However, in reality, things have changed so much and what was true then may not be relevant and good enough in today’s world. Yes 5 years ago, all you got to do is get yourselves tons of links for your website and you can outrank your competition. It’s now not that easy anymore and you probably know you have to ‘go with the flow’ and consider many other factors too. If you don’t then you lose out. I just have to remind you of some recent Google Algorithm changes to bring this point to you. Like the   Google’s Panda Update or the May Day Update. And don’t forget that Google makes more than 300 algorithm changes annually although not all big ones like these two but suffice to say, you must take actions. I have been following the Link Pyramid with good success so I like to share with you just how powerful this method of link building is: Base Links The foundation of your link pyramid are your base links. As with an actual pyramid, the foundation is the largest part of this virtual structure. You need more base links than any other kind of link. Base links are, for lack of better words, lower quality links. Links from things like lesser article sites, social bookmarking sites, blog comments, links from deep inner pages, etc. It’s important that you have a lot of these kinds of links, because Google’s algorithm thinks that this is “natural.” After all, how likely is it that a web site will have a bunch of super-high-quality links from major web sites and not have magnitudes more links from “lesser” sites? So you want to make sure your link pyramid has a solid foundation of these kinds of links.

Mid-Grade Links
The next level of our link pyramid are your mid-grade links. These are links from web sites that have more authority than the sites mentioned previously, but still may not be top-notch sites. The kind of sites that usually reuse EzineArticles content often fall into this category, as do links from mini-sites and sales letter sites.

Mid-grade sites have a fair amount of links aimed at them in their own right, and so Google sees links coming from them as being more individually valuable than the base links. Of course, that means that you don’t need as many links from these kinds of sites as you do from the base link sites.

Nor should you have more links from these kinds of sites than the base link sites. Remember, it’s all about looking “natural” in Google’s eyes.

Highest-Quality Links
For most long-tail keywords (keywords with less competition in the search engines), you don’t even need the top level in your link pyramid. You can usually rank just fine with the base links and mid-grade links. I have numerous sites ranking quite well for many nice keywords without any top-quality links.

However, when you’re aiming higher, you need to collect higher quality links. By “higher quality”, I mean links from sites that already have a lot of links aimed at them. In Google’s eyes, site with a lot of links aimed at them have “authority”, and anyone these “authority sites” link to must also be important.

The great thing about links from authority sites is that a few links can make a big difference. So while these links are more difficult to acquire, you don’t need nearly as many of them to rank well for your keywords. I’ve brought sites from page two for my keywords in Google to page one with just a dozen or two links of this kind (and I’m talking about some fairly competitive keywords).

Make It Look Natural
For best results your link pyramid should look natural to Google. So this means having a large number of base links, a lesser number of mid-grade links, and just a few top-quality links.

But don’t get too concerned if some of your links tend to belong to more than one category of link types. Don’t get too hung up on this because that adds to the “natural” that your link pyramid has become and that is what Google likes to see.

My Thoughts:

This is one reason why many of my 26 niche sites are ranking on Google’s page 1 without much effort because I used mostly high page rank profile links from Angela Edwards. Most times I don’t need to get too many high quality links for my sites unless they are those that are authority sites or when the competition is really outrageously high.

This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites-sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites-sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.

What’s The Impact:

This change is impacting about 12% of search results, so many people have been greatly hit by this search algorithm change by Google.

Niche sites have been hit most simply because many people have been exploiting the relatively easy opportunity to earn quick money online this way. Even the recent Google May Day debacle did little to keep them away from going the easy route including creating MFA (Made for Adsense) sites at their own risks. Even if their sites were not specifically MFA, they still resorted to using clever softwares e.g. auto blogging software that could scrap content easily from other websites.

Google was targeting sites that are low quality and specifically those that do not add value for people. Some article directories fall into this category although interestingly with different magnitude. Even Ezinearticles took a hit although not as much as others. On the other hand I cannot understand why Hubpages took a very big hit from this algorithm change since it only accepts unique content before approving these pages. But as of now, duplicate content is still not penalized so long as they are not found on the same site.


Has the new Google Algorithm affected my 20+ niche websites?

No it has not and that is a relief. I can only say many of my niche sites’ keyword ranking remains the same because I preferred to focus on writing quality contents on my niche sites. I avoided any black hat techniques as I like my visitors to have a feel good experience when they land on my sites, even if they are a small niche site. So it pays to have unique content sites with good, useful information and it just reaffirms what Google looks for in a good website.

I did have a couple of WordPress blogs that are run completely on auto-pilot but not using the much Google loathed auto-blogging plugin. I used the WordPress plugin called UniqueArticleWizard, to publish free unique articles. I would say Google does not mind this because they are as legitimate as can be as I link back to the author of these articles. It would be kind of like guest posting on my blog.

Well let me know if you were affected by the Google Search Algorithm change in anyway. It just means that Google can be tough if it felt there was a need to make big changes even if it incurs the wrath of thousands of bloggers who are always thinking of clever and faster way to learn how to make money blogging.

Do you think blogging has changed over the last few years? Well I think it has for me, at least over the last 3 years that I’ve been blogging.

One of the most obvious ones that strike me most is on blog commenting. I can see a big change in the way people are doing their blog comments. While I still received good, quality comments on this blog and I’m grateful for that, I’ve also seen a big increase in the number of spam comments. It became so bad a few months ago that I had to resort to changing my plugin setting to moderate and approve all new comments. I do apologize if this has inconvenienced you and if you much preferred to see your comment showing up immediately. However you may like to know I approve all good comments within the same day.

Secondly, I am finding the trend shifting towards blogs over-focusing on how to make money blogging and profiting seems to be the only motive. This I believed is caused by just too many blogging softwares being developed and made easily available in all markets. They seem to be appearing at every nook and corner. At times I feel that the intentions of these powerful tools were developed with a somewhat different purpose only to land in the hands of some over zealous Internet Marketers – those who knew how to showcase such tools to their advantage and to quickly launch a new product.

Today people are more inclined to cover topics that they know are going to return them some quick profits. Many are also resorting to auto-blogs and it seems that such blogs are becoming very popular especially for starting niche blogs. Perhaps it’s a smarter way to make money blogging. What do your think? But just to prove a point how much people are caught up by auto-blogs, I Googled it and found plenty and one of them goes like this : “….you are about to discover the secret blueprint to creating niche-dominating, optimized blogs that run on complete auto-pilot and practically forces money into your bank account…”

There are dozens of ways to attract more readers to read our blog post and stick to our blog for days and the method of writing a blog post might affect a first time visitor to stay or leave. I’d actually participated in Darren Rowse’s 31 Days Build A Better Blog project a few days ago, I’d learned a lot from this project. At the 2nd day of the 31DBBB project, he wrote about writing a list post. I’d compiled some information and written my list post, it was “66 Professional Bloggers You Should Follow“. With this list post, I’d attracted a lot of new visitors to my blog and the list post received tonnes of page views as well.

When we talk about make money online, traffic is what we want, especially organic traffic or search engine traffic, because only organic traffic could convert well into money. Writing a list post is easy, simply write your article and list your points in point form, list post must not be a long one, a short one will be better as well. Writing more great and interesting list posts could be able to make you money online indirectly, this can be explained further.

As I told you above, organic traffic is what we want in order to make money online, in order to get more organic traffics. Of-page optimization is very important, such as number of quality backlinks that point to your blog with the relevant anchor tag. With that said, list post is what we should be practicing to get more quality backlinks. Based on my experienced on the “66 Professional Bloggers You Should Follow”, I’d added more than 66 professional bloggers into the list post, after this I’d received a few backlinks from other bloggers who wrote an article and linked my list post.

How To Write A Good List Post

1) Numbering your list
We should always be practicing this while writing a list post, numbering your list, easy for yourself and your readers to read them. Sometimes your list is long, numbering them should be good in reading.

2) At least 10 items in your list
If you’re going to write a list post, this means that you should have dozens of ideas about the topic for your list post, it’s not ideal to make your list post with less than 10 points. If you don’t have enough points, you can save your post in draft and keep adding more points into the list post day by day when you have the ideas, publish it once you have enough points in the list post.

3) Link back to your older post into the list
You can always link back to your older post into the list post. Let’s say you’re writing about “10 Tips How To Improve On-Page Optimization”, and you have an older post talks about “A Good Title Tag And Description Help Your SEO”. In this case, you can add this post into your list and insert a link back to it, you can get the list longer and make your blog sticky because they will spend more time reading your older blog post if the older post is interesting.

4) Make your long list post in series
Sometimes you have dozens of ideas and points to add into the list post, say 160 points. In this case, you can separate the 160 points into a series, let’s say 2 series, 80 points each. Try not to waste your interesting list post in only 1 post, make them 2 series. In this way, you can get backlinks from other bloggers. Besides this your readers who read the first series might be excited enough to come back and read the 2nd series, so you’ll have more and more returning visitors.

5) Ask your readers to continue adding the points into the list
Always ask your readers help to contribute or share their ideas about the list post. As you know, knowledge and ideas from 2 persons might be different, so your readers might have more different points compared with yours. You should give a backlink to your readers who contribute a new point to the list post, as a credit to them, I believe that they would be happy to contribute and share.

6) So, it’s your turn to add your points into this “non list post” and make it a list post. Kindly share your points below in the comment box.

Writing a list post might have the chance of getting backlinks, but there is no guarantee. It’s the same for me, I linked to more than 66 bloggers and wrote the list post, I didn’t know whether they’ll be linking back to me, it’s all about “Give and Take”. Bear in mind, don’t be too mindful about this, just write your interesting and unique list post, people might be more than happy to link with you in future.

There are hundreds of blogging platforms available in the World Wide Web today. Each one specializes on the different features and applications. At the start of 2009, one of the up-and-coming blogging platforms, JournalSpace, has closed down due to a technical sabotage made by an IT employee to one of their main hard drives. Getting that relatively high page rank PR 4 for my Home Internet Business Homepage 2 weeks ago came with some mixed feelings for me. I admit when my homepage had gotten a PR1 a long time ago, I was more overjoyed than getting my PR4 now. Now why is that so you might ask?

Well that’s because in our internet marketing journey we learned that page rank though important contributes only about 10% of what Google uses to give ranking to our search terms. ( page rank: 10%, page content: 30%, backlinks: 60% ). So it doesn’t sound like a big deal, right? Or is it?

It’s not like I’m going to get much richer with this PR4 but then again getting a high page rank is a recognition of what I have done on my homepage and it didn’t come overnight. It’s the same sense of satisfaction whenever I succeeded in something small but fulfilling that has kept me going all this while. Call it a little boost to my ego a little bit with this new PR status. While I’m not over the moon with a page rank PR4, I’m happy it came. It just reaffirms the approaches of some of my work particularly my link building strategy, which I’ve practiced and shared with everyone here.

Let me share with you what I think may have helped me get my page rank PR4 in a chronological list of important events:

1. Link Building:I researched and followed some of the best SEO practices including one from a good friend of mine Scott Coplen’s SEO Tips. I wrote a 5-part blog series documenting and sharing with everyone what I’ve learned. Have you read any of my Link Building Strategy-5 Part Series?

2. Getting Backlinks:I think at some point in time, you could say I focused a little too much in getting backlinks. This post The Easiest Way To Get Backlinks Starts Here described pretty close how fanatic I was in getting lots of backlinks. You could say my quest for backlinks started from here.

3. Blog Commenting: One of the easiest ways I found in getting lots of backlinks is through blog commenting. I didn’t believe it at first so I took up a personal challenge and started an experiment to see if it really works.  At the end of the test I have to say yes it sure did, but not before learning a lesson on How Blog Commenting Got Me 1200 Backlinks in 5 Days. Here are some backlinks growth statistics Oct 2008: 1566 inbound links; Mar 2009:12,873 inbound links.

4. Top Search Engine Ranking: There were already some signs of Google noticing me, or rather, my backlinks growth although most times, we really cannot tell exactly this number in Google. But I started seeing more keyword phrases getting to top search engine rankings. The most noticeable keywords “Work From Home Ideas” and Work At Home Ideas made it to Google Top 10 in Nov 2008. They have stayed on the first page till today.  Well that’s another challenge, keeping it there.

Another of my favorite keyword phrase “Home Internet Business” lies on 12th placing out of 174,000,000 in Google, waiting, just waiting…..

5. Link Exchanges: Don’t underestimate the benefits of doing link exchanges, laborious as it may seem. While #3 focused more on getting quantity of backlinks, my search became a little more intensive hunting for quality backlinks too. The post “The Easiest Natural Link Building To Search Engine Success” takes a look at how important it is in doing link exchanges with others. I focused exclusively in link exchange with other sites with high page rank. The funniest part is that many people approached me first to do these link exchange too, some with high page rank PR5. How long did I take to get Page Rank PR4

The quick answer would be how long have I had this homepage and it’s 20 months. So does it really take me 20 months to achieve a PR4 ranking? Of course not because I’m a part time blogger working only 4 hours a day and if you’re a full time blogger, you could well achieve it much faster. Like I said before it’s relatively easy, if you follow an organized plan.

My Final Thoughts

While in the truest sense, page rank having a 10% influence over your top search engine ranking may seem insignificant, it is nevertheless an important part of the equation:

PR (10%) + Quality Contents (30%) + Backlinks (60%) = Top Search Engine Success

It is also a highly regarded metric used by advertisers seeking out advertising opportunities in all online niche markets and blogs, besides the usual Alexa and Technorati Rankings.

For me the excitement is already over and the real task has begun.  I believe that getting a high PR4 is relatively easy but maintaining it is the bigger challenge. And of course the fact that Google has the final say in changing the way page rank is calculated, makes it even more challenging to maintain a high page rank.

This week I post this one question interview to 4 of my blogger friends what they would do if they could start their blog all over again. This was prompted after I recently read numerous posts on the topic “Are You Giving Up Blogging“. While many of them discussed the reasons such as “it’s too hard”, “you won’t make much money blogging”, ” it needs luck”, ” requires too much long term effort” I suspect many bloggers quit blogging due to very simple reasons. My intent here is to provide some answers to bloggers and hope they help a few would be quitters change their minds.

I would do this…

Firstly I would have a separate domain for my blog instead of a sub directory of my main Plugin-Profit Site. I believe even with a PR3, this has somewhat weakened the site authority than had it been on its own domain. I had to work doubly hard to achieve my current search engine ranking, compared with others and that was a big mistake I made.

Secondly, I would rather not use my name as the domain name. In terms of SEO, it makes better choice if I were to use something else related to my niche. I was just like any other newbie then, with no mentor and not knowing how important this was until it’s a little too late. I guess I was just too eager to start my new website. Well we live to learn.

This is what my friends have to say….

Salwa: I actually have few things that I regret not doing when I started out. First knowing what I know today I would have built an email list right from the start. An email list is the absolute most effective marketing tool available on the Internet today. It provides you with a direct line of communication with your target market, and also enables you to develop a trusting relationship with your subscribers.

Second; I would have balanced my activities more equally between content production and promotion/marketing. And lastly taken things less personally.

Alan Mater: One of the things I would do differently is putting more emphasis into promoting my blog in the early stages. When I first started blogging, I spent a lot of time on the visual appearance of my blog. While the look and feel of a blog is important, I didn’t do enough to get the word out and drive traffic to it. If I had to start over, I would work more on marketing and building backlinks to my blog. There’s no point in having a nice looking blog with great content if hardly anyone knows about it. Now that my blog is six months old, I’m just now starting to do more about marketing it and getting more traffic. My advice would be to spend just as much time marketing your blog while you’re working on the appearance and creating content for it.

JR: If I could start my blog over I would definitely have picked a different blog theme, one with more than one sidebar, or the option to add another and I would make sure the sidebar was wider than the one I currently have.

Another thing I would do differently is to launch with less posts, when I first started I posted some of my best work all at once, before I had any readers in order to have a deep site for the search engines. In retrospect this was a mistake, I should have waited for the readership to build and then posted gradually.

James King-Select a good web host would be my first choice. I listened to an Internet business podcast back in 2006 and they recommended this hosting company. I purchased some reseller hosting in 2007, where I found the hosting to be very cheap. Where you could easily purchase 2TB of bandwidth for under $200 for the year, at the time I thought it was a bargain. However, as I progressed into creating more WordPress blogs I noticed that my loading times from the databases was getting worse and worse. At one time, I was waiting over one minute to download a page from WordPress and this was the “Hello World” page. The very first page on the your new WordPress blog.

As time progressed, I was suffered with headaches and frustration with the slow loading time from my blog. The customer service was poor and it was getting beyond a joke. The databases were crawling, the customer service was useless and support there wasn’t any. I created atmmultimedia on this reseller hosting server and four weeks later, in the footer there were hidden hyperlinks. My blog had been hacked, I was so angry. I couldn’t even retrieve any of my blog posts as the site was infected.  Another lesson to you all bloggers: back up your blog on a regular basis to avoid heartache.

I realised that if atmmultimedia was going to be successful, then I had to transfer to a good reliable host. I live in the UK and I decided to a use a UK host instead. Where if I have any trouble I could easily phone or even visit their office. Heart Internet is the best hosting I’ve ever used, although they cost more than other hosting companies, I would recommend them for their excellent support and after sales support.

My main objective is to see a dramatic increase in my blog contents as my readership has grown quite significantly recently.  Having said that, I’ll still maintain quality over quantity to live up to what this blog has  been evolving from the very beginning.
