My first Authority Website that I started on Dec 31, 2010 now gets constant traffic and earns its first adsense click albeit only 81 cents after 2 weeks. But I am thrilled to say the least. Why?

Well here’s 5 reasons why before I go into a little more detail….

Because:

1. it is not ranking in any specific keywords in Google (yet) so where did the traffic come from you might ask?
2. my belief in John XFactor takes me to another level of success. Success has many steps and this is just the first step that clearly tells me that his Authority Site Adsense Guide works.
3. I took actions 15 months ago when I started building micro niche adsense sites.
4. I can now prove to people that the best thing I have learned from XFactor about starting an authority site is – that you do not need to focus too much on specific keywords for your website.
5. building an authority website is a worthwhile investment of time and little money.

How Much is my traffic

Since a week ago I am getting about 5 – 10 impressions a day when I see in my adsense admin. That to some people do not mean too much but for me I  look beyond the figures. I look at consistency and it’s daily impressions that I am getting for a new site that has only 8 pages. Authority site that is not even ranking in Google. So imagine when it has 80 pages, 800 pages – now that’s the big picture.

Where does the traffic come from?

Well that’s a good question too considering that most people (like I was) put off launching an authority website because they think they don’t stand a chance with all those well established players in their niche.

My traffic does not come from just one or two keyword or keyword phrases. Like they figured it out, I don’t stand a chance.

My traffic comes from……hundreds of keyword phrases but I don’t lose hair over backlinking and other conventional methods of getting each of these hundreds of keywords ranked. That would be an insurmountable feat to accomplish. The secret? I just write very long articles. Read up my last post titled : First Authority Website Launched|Enter Web Content Studio and you will know what I mean.

Now I don’t write long articles for the sake of making it lengthy. Foolhardy that would be. It’s just that I ensure each of my authority website article has all the keyword phrases that all the top 10 websites for my niche has – yes all of their web pages.

Writing Themed Articles Works

My method of writing themed content articles that I learned from Dr Andy Williams is working very well.  When you theme a page this automatically “optimizes” the page for long tail phrases. The reason I got interested in this technique is because Andy revealed why it has to work….because Google relies on it in their algorithms and here is the proof that you can read it too. Andy did extensive research on this subject and discovered that all the pages in the first page of Google for any keyword have a core group of words on the page. Obviously Google is silent on this but it just means that its algorithm in ranking requires a website to contain Latent Semamtic Indexing but Andy calls it “theming”.

He tells us that one of the clearest signs that he believes Google uses LSI or theming in ranking a website is that in many of our searches in Google for a particular keyword, Google shows that this keyword has millions of such pages. Yet when you actually scroll down to the last page it is usually much lesser. He tested for one keyword phrase “blood sugar spike” which Google knows about 48 million pages but only recognized 500 pages. His conclusion. Google could only find 500 pages that meet the LSI or themed keyword criteria it expects to see. The rest of the 48 million pages – well they most likely go to their supplementary index. Take a look at the image below and you will understand better:

Well coming back to my own Authority Website:

So far I have written only themed content articles of about 8 pages over 5 silo’ed categories and they are all long articles of more than 1000 pages each. All these articles use keyword phrases ranging from 1, 2, 3 and 4 keywords and each article contains at least 50 different keyword phrases belonging to the top 10 websites that Google ranks on its page one.

So when I get the traffic coming to visit my website, I do not know which particular keyword phrase brings it here, nor do I care.  I could if I wanted to by installing Google Analytics but chose not to as I am too busy to over-analyse these things so long as I get the traffic.

Well you don’t have to buy the Web Content Studio if it does not serve your purpose at the moment. However for the time being you could just give it some thought and write themed word articles knowing that Google uses it to rank your website. Food for thought!

There are hundreds of blogging platforms available in the World Wide Web today. Each one specializes on the different features and applications. At the start of 2009, one of the up-and-coming blogging platforms, JournalSpace, has closed down due to a technical sabotage made by an IT employee to one of their main hard drives. This incident has disgruntled a lot of bloggers who now have zero journal entries. In order to avoid ignorance on this subject, here are a few blogging platform tips for maximizing your site visibility.

Knowing the Difference

Choosing the right blogging platform is essential in maintaining a blog. Remember that you have to assess your skills before picking the right platform to use. There are those that may require advance technical skills involving the use of Javascript or HTML. There are also those that require a certain fee to keep the web space running.

Blog platforms come in two types: Hosted Blog Platform and Stand Alone Blog Platform. A Hosted Blog Platform is by the word itself “hosted” by a particular server using their own domain. More often than not, these are the widely used blog platforms in the internet; the standouts include WordPress, Blogger and Livejournal. The process of site customization is not that intricate and tedious for Hosted Blog Platforms. There are user-friendly codes that you can use to manage your account. Most layouts are ready-to-use and the packages are usually cheap or free of charge.

A Stand Alone Blog Platform, on the other hand, aims for personalization. Your blog can be noticeable with its own domain and with modified applications. A number of the existing Stand Alone Blog Platforms include Movable Type, Expression Engine and b2Evolution. These platforms can configured to your own liking and have various plug-ins that are constantly updated.

Getting the Criteria

Since each person has different skills in using online softwares, you may also opt to create your own criteria in choosing your blogging platform. Remember that in doing so, you must think of which possible server can best maximize your site visibility.

Plug-ins. One effective way to make your blog stand out is to insert plug-ins. These are usually additional features that serve different purposes. To guard your guestbook against spam, you may indicate the requirement of typing codes. You may also tag related articles depending on the topic of your entry as well as RSS and Syndicate features.

Budget. Make sure you know how much you want to spend. The bigger your budget is, the more chances of purchasing a better domain. You also have to make sure that you get your money’s worth by choosing the platform that you can manage and configure on your own.

Tech-savvy. Know what you can and cannot do. Although the platform may be promising in its applications, you have to make sure that they are useable. Some blog platforms are also not compatible with other media sites like Flicker, YouTube or Photobucket.

A Piece of Advice

It always pays to research on your own and to check if some of your friends are using those platforms. Most of the time, the best advisers are the current users of the application.

Here comes my very first interview on this work at home blog. This week I had the pleasure of interviewing Yan Susanto, affectionately known as Yan to most bloggers among us. He runs ThouShallBlog, Blogging Tips For Beginners, a blog that helps beginners blog better.

I’ve always been fascinated by Yan from the very first time I met him online in June last year. I remembered well how I met him though. I was doing my research for my Link Building Strategy Blog Posts Series and was first attracted not to his blog but his Gravatar. You see, Yan used a pretty lady picture as his blog gravatar. It was probably an experiment or a case study and yeah, you could say I participated in it, quite unknowingly I might add. I’ve always wanted to interview him to find out a little more about this intriguing man who seems to know what he needs and gets what he wants.

Peter: What do you think is the no. 1 mistake many new bloggers make and what specific tips can you give to them to make it in the blogosphere.

Yan:Personally, I think one of the most common mistakes newbies make is to have the wrong mindset right out of the gate. 90% of newbies start a blog hoping to be the next superstar blogger with a big fat paycheck.

Sure, anyone can be the next superstar blogger but it doesn’t happen overnight. In blogging there is no such thing of instant results.

When you blog about something you enjoy writing, you’ll probably stick around long enough to be a superstar blogger and make money.

Peter: We’ve seen your ˜ThouShallBlog” achieve so much success within so short a time like PR3 in 3 months, ˜the 45n5 Top 100″ (#8), 300 unique visitors/1000 page views in 4 months. Could you share with us what made these possible.

Yan: In retrospect, getting a PR 3 then was a big deal but it isn’t the case anymore. It’s an open secret that anyone who comment consistently could easily get a PR 3 nowadays.

And for that reason alone, the quality of comments has degraded to a pathetic level. To put it bluntly, it has evolved into a competition of “who has the right to stay as the top commentator”. Just look at those who sit comfortably on John Chow’s Top Commentator list and you’ll know what I mean.

Sad but that’s exactly what made all these possible.

Peter: In Nov last year you made a big decision to change your blog to a nofollow blog, You felt that dofollow blogs leak out too much pagerank link juice and that this change will help TSB achieve higher PR. Fast forward to today, 5 months later, your higher PR expectation has not happened…yet. Did your decision come back to haunt you? You did mention that you could revert back to dofollow if it didn’t work out. Or do you still believe you made the right decision and on course for better things to come?

Yan: Those who have been following TSB know well that whatever things I did were just my way of experimenting with different style of ‘doing things”. Yes, nothing happened on the last PR update and judging by the number inbound links from authority sites, I believe the PR is not likely to change on the next update either.

It’s too early to say if what I did was right or wrong but as my blog grows so does the spammy comments. So ‘nofollowing’ my blog might not be a bad thing after all. Besides, I don’t need to “dofollow’ my blog to encourage more comments at this point of time.

Peter: We noted some big changes you’ve recently made on TSB. You’ve outsourced most of the writing to a team of writers. What was the main reason behind this change. I mean lots of your readers enjoy your blog not only because of your excellent content you’ve shared, but also your unique writing style they love and have grown quite accustomed to.

Yan: I’m grateful that many are still supporting TSB long after I stop contributing. Readership level has grown by as much as 30% over the last few months and so has the subscribers level. The team of writers and some guest posters have done really a great job. Well, what more can I ask?

Anyhow it just dawned upon me that there was little room for me to grow anymore if I were to spend my time maintaining TSB. I wanted to do something else. I didn’t want to stay in my comfort zone. So I made the resolution to explore into a whole new world of niche marketing and that’s where I’ve found my new passion.

And inviting others to write for TSB helps me to focus on what needs to be done. It’s a win-win deal for both parties. With an already established blog community, writing for TSB is the next best promotional strategy for any aspiring bloggers.

Didn’t I say it’s a free advertising?

Peter: Here is a hypothetical question. If you had to start blogging all over again, what will be some of the things you’ll do differently for TSB.

Yan: Build an email list right from the start. It’s the best permission marketing I should have undertaken long ago. It was a mistake but we live to learn, don’t we?

Peter: Recently you’ve gone into niche blogging. What prompted you to venture out of your comfort zone and into this more specialized form of blogging. Is this the direction you’re heading i.e. start many more niche blogs? What are your goals and what experience can you share with us and has it been profitable so far. Who would you recommend niche blogging to.

Yan: Yes, apart from coming up with my own products, that is going to be the direction I see myself heading for the next 2 years. My goal? To be able to draw 5-figure incomes all on auto-pilot by the end of 2010.

That said, I’m working 16 hours a day now so I can only work 1-hour a day in 2010. That’s the ultimate destination.

Anyway I’m coming up with my own ebook soon where I’d share all there is to know about niche marketing. So stay tuned.

Peter: What’s a typical work day like for you Yan?

Yan: As I’ve said I work 16 hours a day answering emails and comments, browsing my RSS feed, ghostwriting for others, uncover hidden niches and working on other internet projects.

My day usually starts at 12PM till 4AM. Yes, I’m not an early riser as I usually work better at night when my brain is at its best. Suffice to say, the most important task is done after midnight.

Peter: While we know a lot about your blogging prowess, we don’t know much about you as a person. Could you tell a little about you as a family man?

Yan: I’m a father of 9 months old son who is the king of the house and that’s the reason why the most important thing is done after midnight……

And I also count my blessing to have a very supportive wife who takes good care of our son. Yes, she is the Queen who rules the house too…

Peter: Where do you see yourself blogging wise in 6 months and in 5 years?

Yan: I picture myself spending 16 quality hours a day with my family and working 1-hour a day in 5 years time. That’s the beauty of being an internet entrepreneur.

Peter: How do you keep coming up with such great content for your blog? Where do you get the inspiration?

Yan: To be honest, what’s on TSB can be easily found elsewhere. All I did was to present them in a different style that appeals to my readers. So it’s safe to conclude that it really isn’t about ‘what you say’. It all comes down to ‘how you say it’ in your unique voice.

There are more than 100 million blogs up and running today, and millions of them are run poorly. Many bloggers, even the experienced ones, make simple mistakes that cost them greatly in the end. Mistakes can lead to readers leaving your blog, which is a nightmare for any blogger. In order to help out people who are new to blogging, or those who think they may be doing it wrong, I have compiled a list of the top 10 mistakes that bloggers make.

1. Over-advertising

Over-advertising is an instant blog killer. It is fine to run some small, tasteful ads within your content and in the area surrounding it. However, when I see a blog that has 3 Adsense blocks, Chitika, banners, and affiliate offers, all crammed together, I leave. I have no patience for blogs cluttered with advertisements, and neither do most people. Just remember that when it comes to advertising, keep it tasteful, and you will probably see better results anyways.

2. Duplicate content

Duplicate content, or copied content, not only hurts your rankings in Google and other search engines, but it is pointless. Why would someone read your blog if the exact same article was on another site? What would be the point? You should make all your posts original and fresh, even if you are just regurgitating old news, at least put it in your own words.

3. Selling/giving away user information

This is a big no-no. Many blogs have a newsletter or RSS feed that requires users to submit their email address. Emailing your readers personally, even if it has advertisements in it, is fine, as long as you do it sparingly. However, spamming readers, or worse, selling their information, will instantly decrease your readers’ trust in you. People are smarter than you think, and many people will be able to trace the spam they receive back to you and your blog.

4. Including too much personal opinion

Personal opinion is fine, but keep it civil, especially when you are talking about religion or other touchy subjects. Don’t post anything that could offend someone badly.

5. Becoming argumentative

No matter how good your content is, there will always be negative contents. One huge mistake many bloggers make is arguing with the commenter’s. This is not only hurtful to your blog, it is also quite pointless. If you feel that the comment was unwarranted, call the person on it, but again, keep it civil. Ask them why they feel that way, but never attack them personally.

6. Ignoring readers

Blog readers these days want to interact with the blogger. They will often send emails or leave comments on your posts. Your job as a blogger is to satisfy your readers, whatever it takes. Reply to their emails courteously, and if you can help them with a problem, do it.

7. Poorly-written posts

I, along with most of the world, absolutely hate poorly written blog posts. If a post is barely understandable, written in half-English, no one is going to want to read it. Your attempts are futile if you cannot write understandably. Even if you include helpful resources and information, it won’t do any good if no one can read it! If you don’t consider yourself to be a good writer, you have two options: one, hire a writer, and two, allow users to submit posts. The first option is probably the best, but can also be expensive. Opening your blog to the public can work well, but it also lowers your authority sometimes.

8. Boring/generic design

Despite what many people think, the quality of your posts is not everything. If you plan on building a blog for the long run, invest in a good design now. You can find skilled designers online who will design and code a WordPress theme for you, or a normal HTML/CSS design. Alternatively, you could simply hire someone to do a header, and replace the header on a free WordPress theme. If you don’t want to spend money, find a top-notch free theme. There are thousands out there to choose from, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that fits your blog.

9. Disrupting normal patterns

When your blog gains readers, those readers expect new posts regularly. Now, I understand that we are all human and posting every day is unrealistic, but I also understand that if you don’t update your blog regularly, you will lose readers. You don’t have to post daily, but try to maintain at least 2-3 posts per week, the more the better. If you are going on vacation or will be unable to post for a while, simply make a post on your blog explaining the situation, and noting when you will begin posting again. Your readers will understand.

10. Pop-ups/malicious code/inappropriate advertisements

Another massive mistake that some bloggers make is thinking that using a few pop-ups or allowing malicious ads won’t affect their blog. The truth is that even one little popup can discourage a reader from ever returning to your site again. I know you want to build your list, but popup asking for an email address is not necessary. If users are interested in signing up to your newsletter then they will take the time to find the submission form. The second part of this is malicious code or advertisements. I have seen only a few blogs doing this, but the ones that were I immediately blocked. Some webmasters allow malicious codes or advertisements on their site. This is a huge mistake. Even if you get paid a lot for displaying a pop under or another shady advertisement does not mean it is worth it. In the end you will lose readers and probably make much less than you would have over time. I should also mention inappropriate advertisements. I am speaking mostly of pornographic ads on a non-pornographic site. If you blog is an adult blog with material related to porn, go ahead and post porn ads. However, if your blog is not adult based, you should never display pornographic links or advertisements. Am I a Twitter Convert?

To be honest, I was never quite a big fan of this micro blogging initially when I first heard of it. Somehow I’m not much of a social guy and the idea of sending short messages telling people “what am I doing” in Twitter didn’t quite appeal to me. Twitter – The Impact to well known bloggers:

• Darren Rowse started a new blog devoting it entirely on Twitter.
• John Chow completed what is believed to the the world’s first Twitterview – an interview done exclusively on Twitter with questions and answer that are no longer than 140 characters. In doing so, he didn’t realize he had coined the phrase Twitterview for the world to use.

These are pretty big names around the blogosphere and their actions speak louder than words. They are firm believers of the power of Twitter and what it can do to help our work at home business going forward. John Chow said of this on his blog ” How To Make 2009 Your Best Blogging Year:

I said that you need to get on Twitter if you haven’t already done so. 2009 will be the year of Twitter. Zimbio (PR6)

It is a social networking site that allows you to find out about the latest topics that appeal to you, but more importantly for me, it promotes and syndicates two of my home business blogs and getting valuable backlinks, and traffic at the same time. According to Wikipedia A Wiki is a type of website that allows users to add, remove, or otherwise edit and change most content very quickly and easily. Here is one wiki I made and link to my website and blog using my keywords I’m ranking: http://work-from-home-ideas.wikidot.com/

Scribd (PR 7)

Write a keyword optimized post and include your main keywords to your website or work at home blog. Then upload it to Scribd. How’s that for simplicity. The good thing about this site is that it has a page rank of 7 and your newly created page gets visited by Google bots and other search engines like Yahoo, MSN all the time. Although my primary interest is SEO ranking, I am getting some traffic too. Since my page was created less than a month ago, I have received 118 views. Nothing to gloat about but then, that’s just a bonus I didn’t plan for so I’m not complaining. Well take a look at my document I uploaded here to see how it looks.

Squidoo (PR8)

Don’t forget your favorite Squidoo lens. There has got to be some truth when I hear just too many bloggers and friends swear how much good their favorite Squidoo lenses have done for them. Could this be a reason why these same people are able to occupy top position at Google despite having chosen highly competitive keywords. Or could it be Google for some unknown reasons just love Squidoo so much or  Squidoo has a way of dominating Google. Well for any scientific proof or another case study, that will have to wait for another post. But for now it may be a good idea to just write a few Squidoo lenses and link to your sites and blogs. EBay (PR8)

If you’ve missed my post on how to get a free backlink from eBay, you can read it here again. This eBay blog was started 2 months ago specifically for link building purposes and as such I’ve exchanged many links with other bloggers on this page. Hopefully this will increase my page rank over time but for now my efforts have helped this ebay blog get to Google’s page 2 for the search term ‘work at home ideas‘.

Free WordPress Blog (PR9)

The biggest advantage of using the Free WordPress Blog, besides that it’s free, is the known fact that having links from different IP addresses is really good for SEO as they are deemed natural linking. So get yourself a free WordPress blog and start linking to your website and blog using your keywords. The good thing about having another WordPress blog is that you’ll enjoy the obvious benefits since all WordPress blogs are of great value. This new blog just got it’s PR1 with the December 2008 Google PR update. Since I first posted about my keyword phrase “Work From Home Ideas” made it to Google Top 10 one month ago, it has remained in this position. Since then, I have had another keyword phrase “Work At Home Ideas” too making it to Google Top 10. I like to think that getting lots of free backlinks certainly feature in my link building strategy, which has in some small ways made this possible in getting a good search engine ranking.

What a wonderful way to start my first post in 2009 with my Top Commentator Award and showing my appreciation to my readers and subscribers for supporting my home business blog and all your valuable comments for the year 2008. Recently I did a quick experiment on forum marketing and apart from the useful result which I will share here, the initial perception I observed was that many people are using it to drive quality visitors to their website, blog or money making products- for free.

1. Some Forum Marketing Tips

• Join a forum related to your product or services. If you want to drive traffic to your website of money making niche you won’t want to get visitors from a forum related to dogs would you?. You should then join Internet Marketing forums like Warrior Forum.

• Never post spam but post only useful information to share with others in the forum. In fact make your participation count. Be seen and heard as a leader or an expert in your area of expertise. Or at least this should be what you should hope to achieve at this forum.

• Post regularly and answer as many questions as you can. That’s a good way to gain people’s trust. Over time people follow your recommendations and of course that’s where your forum signature links come in handy.

2. Forum Marketing and Backlinks

A very simplistic way of showing the relationship between forum marketing and backlinks is this. If you have done 1000 posts on your favorite forum and your signature is included in those posts, this means that you will get at least 1000 backlinks from Google. Well theoretically this is true but of course the quality of your post will determine your success rate at getting these backlinks. Personally I’ve written about 350 posts on Warrior Forum. Not really something to gloat about, but it’s still good enough to see lots of backlinks for my home business blog.

3. Optimize your forum posts:

When you do your posts on forums, it is a worthwhile effort to optimize your posts. This simply means just like your blog or article postings, putting keywords and bolding text at forum posts goes a long way in getting friendly with your Google bots visiting the forum. Well since Warrior Forum is a dofollow forum, it probably helps too that I always linkback to my blog posts after each post where possible. Here take a look at a screenshot I made to show how bolding text helped me:

4. Use Good Anchor Text for your Forum Signatures

I mentioned before the more you post the more backlinks you will get.  It can’t get any simpler than that. However it would be your own doing if you do not ensure good anchor text that contains you keyword.

5. How To Get More Traffic From Forum Marketing

So I finally did some research on how to increase website traffic by using Internet Forums, starting with my favorite one, Warrior Forum. Truth be told, my traffic from even my favorite forum really sucks. Perhaps I was just too contented with getting the good amount of backlinks. But for those of you who have had great success over obtaining huge amount of targeted traffic from forums, you’d know it probably just take a little understanding about what people are looking for. So if you can somehow find this missing ink, Boom! you’ve got traffic!

6. My experiment to get more traffic from forum marketing

This is my experiment to find out what could possibly be that missing link for me in not getting the traffic from forum marketing. It is not intended to market a product or services to Warrior Forum, not yet anyway. It’s just my experiment to find out how to increase my visitors and traffic. Here is what I did or observed:

• I selected 2 of my blog posts and started a thread featuring them. They were carefully selected using topics that were interesting enough to attract people to the posts.
• Each of the 2 posts’ titles asks a question.  As the topics were popular people are curious as to the answer that is found in the post.
• My experiment result after 12 hours: More than a hundred people read my 2 posts to find out the answers to the 2 posts: How To Get Free Backlinks From eBay and How To Get Google Index New Blog In 3 Hours.
• The topic of make money online interests many people in Warrior Forum as can be seen in one thread I found titled “I intend to make $10K in 7 days” which generated 9200 views in 2 weeks. Wow!

7. List of do-follow forums

Here is a good list of do-follow forums courtesy of my good friend Ben Pei. You will know that Warrior Forum is also top in his list too. Well good minds think alike.

While the good traffic to these 2 posts is of no significance as far as blog monetizing is concerned ( I got a few more subscribers though), it does show that there is enormous traffic in forum marketing waiting to be tapped. I’m pretty pleased with my experiment knowing that when I do have a hot product, or joint venture that I want launched, forum marketing is definitely one of my best options to market it with a reasonable amount of traffic expected.
