What Was My Mistake On Top Search Engine Ranking?

Well  I was chatting with a good friend of mine online one day, someone who was already earning himself more than 100 dollars a day. I asked him what advice he could give me for a site that is already on Google No. 1 Position? I asked him specifically if I should continue doing link building or should I just ease off, leave it and focus instead on other sites. The reply came quick and he said something like “Don’t do anything. If it ain’t broke why fix it? ” That was 2 years ago.

Well fast forward to today, 2 years later, if someone were to ask me that same question, I would have a totally different answer for him or her.  I would say getting a site to Google’s No. 1 position is not the hardest part. The hardest part is knowing what you must do to keep that site ranking No.1 in Google.  There is no guarantee that it will remain there forever as most of your competitors are like you too. They will in no time displace your site’s position if you choose to be naive. Also Google is always changing its ranking algorithm. Think of Panda and you will understand just what I mean. There’s no rest for the wicked it seems!

The tip I am going to share with you today is found in a post I wrote sometime ago when I first discovered the article distribution site called Ezarticlelink. If you have not read it, here it is :”Discover How zArticleLink Auto Creates Backlinks For Your Blog. My intention then was to create some backlinks for my Learn Affiliate Marketing blog since I had neglected this blog and had practically zero backlinks. So I set up an Article Directory on the blog. Well after 1 year the site has now 1700 indexed pages, 1271 backlinks and PR1. Not bad for just setting it up and doing nothing because these backlinks are generated on auto-pilot.

Unfortunately with the recent Google Panda updates, many of the article directories have been penalized by Google . Well fast forward to today, in my recent visits to many blogs doing commenting, I could see many other bloggers’ web pages getting at least a PR1. I thought this seems somewhat unusual as such rankings seemed to show up only after an official Google PageRank has taken place.  So I thought I’ll do a quick case study on my own blog posts to see why this is so. Here’s what I found:

Case Study of last 5 Posts:

1. The 5 posts were published on Jul 31, Aug 4, Aug 10, Aug 14 and Aug 21 respectively.

2. Only 1 of the 5 posts had been given a PR1 while all others had PR0.

3. The post with PR1 followed some specific onpage SEO factors suggested by the SEO Jacking WP Plugin while all other 4 posts did not. The SEO onpage factors that I had diligently followed to the T were as follows:

4. No link building work was done on any of these 5 posts nor any promotion of these posts whatsoever.

Case Study Findings

Clearly, you can see how it is so simple to get Google PageRank by following some simple onpage SEO. Now obviously this means that Google places much importance on onpage SEO and its page rank algorithm includes some of these factors.

Final Thoughts

It looks like it is now relatively easy to get a PR1 for any web page and I like to think it’s because of the last Google Panda algorithm changes somehow. But this just helps to remind me to give Google what it wants in terms of onsite SEO.Similar Posts:

If getting backlinks is something you constantly do for your online business (and you should) that’s understandable. After all, backlinks play such an important role in our business and we seem to can’t stop doing enough of it ourselves; or buy backlink services sometimes so as to get our sites ranking well. Yet, often enough, they are the cause of many success stories as well as  the pain and struggles of many Internet Marketers trying to make the most out of their blogs or websites. We certainly can relate to all that at some point in time in our Internet Marketing journey. However, today, let’s take a step back to ask ourselves is what we have been doing good enough? Are we getting the just deserts for all the hard work done to acquire our backlinks? If not what else can we do.

A Link is Still a Link. Or is it?

It probably is true when you started your online business 5 years ago. However, in reality, things have changed so much and what was true then may not be relevant and good enough in today’s world. Yes 5 years ago, all you got to do is get yourselves tons of links for your website and you can outrank your competition. It’s now not that easy anymore and you probably know you have to ‘go with the flow’ and consider many other factors too. If you don’t then you lose out. I just have to remind you of some recent Google Algorithm changes to bring this point to you. Like the   Google’s Panda Update or the May Day Update. And don’t forget that Google makes more than 300 algorithm changes annually although not all big ones like these two but suffice to say, you must take actions. I have been following the Link Pyramid with good success so I like to share with you just how powerful this method of link building is: Base Links The foundation of your link pyramid are your base links. As with an actual pyramid, the foundation is the largest part of this virtual structure. You need more base links than any other kind of link. Base links are, for lack of better words, lower quality links. Links from things like lesser article sites, social bookmarking sites, blog comments, links from deep inner pages, etc. It’s important that you have a lot of these kinds of links, because Google’s algorithm thinks that this is “natural.” After all, how likely is it that a web site will have a bunch of super-high-quality links from major web sites and not have magnitudes more links from “lesser” sites? So you want to make sure your link pyramid has a solid foundation of these kinds of links.

Mid-Grade Links
The next level of our link pyramid are your mid-grade links. These are links from web sites that have more authority than the sites mentioned previously, but still may not be top-notch sites. The kind of sites that usually reuse EzineArticles content often fall into this category, as do links from mini-sites and sales letter sites.

Mid-grade sites have a fair amount of links aimed at them in their own right, and so Google sees links coming from them as being more individually valuable than the base links. Of course, that means that you don’t need as many links from these kinds of sites as you do from the base link sites.

Nor should you have more links from these kinds of sites than the base link sites. Remember, it’s all about looking “natural” in Google’s eyes.

Highest-Quality Links
For most long-tail keywords (keywords with less competition in the search engines), you don’t even need the top level in your link pyramid. You can usually rank just fine with the base links and mid-grade links. I have numerous sites ranking quite well for many nice keywords without any top-quality links.

However, when you’re aiming higher, you need to collect higher quality links. By “higher quality”, I mean links from sites that already have a lot of links aimed at them. In Google’s eyes, site with a lot of links aimed at them have “authority”, and anyone these “authority sites” link to must also be important.

The great thing about links from authority sites is that a few links can make a big difference. So while these links are more difficult to acquire, you don’t need nearly as many of them to rank well for your keywords. I’ve brought sites from page two for my keywords in Google to page one with just a dozen or two links of this kind (and I’m talking about some fairly competitive keywords).

Make It Look Natural
For best results your link pyramid should look natural to Google. So this means having a large number of base links, a lesser number of mid-grade links, and just a few top-quality links.

But don’t get too concerned if some of your links tend to belong to more than one category of link types. Don’t get too hung up on this because that adds to the “natural” that your link pyramid has become and that is what Google likes to see.

My Thoughts:

This is one reason why many of my 26 niche sites are ranking on Google’s page 1 without much effort because I used mostly high page rank profile links from Angela Edwards. Most times I don’t need to get too many high quality links for my sites unless they are those that are authority sites or when the competition is really outrageously high.

Ok, jokes aside….

This IMT Website Submitter lets you submit your website to 2500+ places for FREE!  All of them are the usual websites that provide the “who is”, “about us”, “website statistics” services.

I have actually used some of these websites each time I have a new site to quickly get Google index and I have to say, they worked for me to get indexed real fast. I did it manually then though submitting to about 20 such sites each time. So I guess having a script that automatically submits for your site and allowing you to put your keyword, takes all the work away. That’s called working smart.

Most of these websites have  been around for some time and are both dofollow or nofollow sites. Because they are established sites you can be sure that they get crawled by the search engines regularly including Google and other SE like Yahoo and Bing. The new pages being created for your websites will be quickly found and you will get them indexed and some backlinks too.

A word of caution

Personally I think this is a great tool to use but you should bear in mind a few things. Don’t expect to receive 2500 backlinks although the post title may have suggested this. You will get some backlinks but not all of them but then again these links are probably not the most sought after or highly valued ones as well. Then again you might say a link is still a link.

For me I used this tool mostly for my many free web 2.0 sites that I’ve created to boost my search engine rankings for all my money making sites.  You could use this tool if you have just set up a new website and wish to get it to a decent SERP ranking. This way there is practically no risk using this free automated too.

1. First go to Google and do a search for keywords related to your niche (e.g. ‘home business’ or ‘Internet Marketing’ or ‘make money blogging‘).

Put this query into the Google search box:

(just substitute the keyword phrases to your own and change the number of times article has been viewed to your preference)

Whether it’s through backlink building or something else, achieving top search engine ranking on the major search engines especially Google must be the greatest desire of every online business owner. Well certainly since everything that you hope to achieve in your business depends very much on it. Web traffic, online profits, marketing strategies, brand marketing, website popularity among others.

What I learned from my recent backlink building success

While I certainly won’t call getting to Google’s page 1 for three keyword phrases over 3 weeks a major milestone in my Internet Marketing journey, I do relish a moment of satisfaction. I guess it’s these little things that keep us going.  But what have I learned? I learned:

• that quality of backlinks is more important than quantity. Getting 10 links from PR6-PR9 is of greater value than getting 100 links from PR1-PR2 sites.
• Google’s page rank does not mean much since I was able to outrank many sites which had higher page rank than my homepage – due to my high quality PR sites’ backlinks
• A common mistake many new marketers make while searching for backlinks of  their  website is to run the query ” link:domain.com” in the Google search engine. This is totally inaccurate. A better option is through the use of the Webmasters Tools section.
• you get the benefit of a site with high page rank even if your link appears on any of its many pages with ZERO page rank.
• it doesn’t bother me even if bad sites link to me, including spammy ones, gambling sites etc. I really cannot control people who choose to link to me but it’s important to know that it won’t hurt me. But it would be a different story to link back to these sites, so I absolutely don’t link to such sites.
• that Angela Edward’s backlink building program really works. Perhaps I’ve been barking at the wrong tree but it helped me achieve in 3 weeks what I could never did in 2 years- at least for these 3 keyword phrases.

how many backlinks do you need to outrank other websites?

• there is no cast-in-stone magic number. It depends on how competitive your niche is. For very competitive ones like Internet Marketing, Weight Loss or Dating Service, you should do about 100-200 high PR backlinks.
• it also depends on where your keyword phrase ranking currently stands. I mentioned in my recent post “Link Building: Taking Backlink Building To a Higher Level“, it took me about 50 good links to move keyword phrase ‘online business opportunities’ 22 positions to #2.
• I would say for niche marketing sites you would need about 50-70 high PR links to see good results.

• A firefox addon’ which identifies dofollow links by the color purple (red signifies nofollow links)

Keyword Research – Knowing Your Competitors

When you are trying to outrank other websites in your keyword phrases to get top search engine ranking, you should spend some effort sizing up your competitors. Finding out what’s their SERP on the same keyword you’re trying to rank for, how many incoming links, page rank etc are critical information you can use to beat them. There are many tools which can do this job but lately I was pretty impressed with Keyword Spy Tool which helps you spy on your competitors in seconds. Another Experiment to Get Google Top 10 Ranking For Another Keyword Phrase

Because of my recent good results and since I am now continuously doing backlink building using this technique, I have selected another keyword phrase “home business ideas” to put to the test. This keyword is currently on Google’s page 2, 15th position. I’ve been ranking on this keyword for at least 2 years and nothing I did using all other means could improve this position. In fact at times it moved to page 3. Will I be able to get it to an improved search engine ranking i.e. Page 1? Well the answer lies in the backlink building I’m going to do and the 25 PR6-PR9 links (possibly 50 links) that I’ll be using to try to achieve that.

This experiment is somewhat different from the last one in that I have yet to achieve any improved results during post publication. So you get to see it for yourself the SERP movement, the Google dancing right before you if you like to follow the progress. Hopefully it ends on a high!

Once this post is published I will commence my backlink building work as I’ve just purchased a new packet from Angela. I will be documenting the results regularly so do stay in touch with the progress update. One thing I learned is that during the backlink building the ‘Google Dance’ comes into play, meaning my position starts to fluctuate quite a bit. In my last keyword ranking the position completely disappeared for 2 days before reappearing on page 1 and have stayed there since.

Link Building – Are there better ways we have not thought of?

While we unanimously agree that link building plays a vital role in getting our blogs and websites better ranked in the Search Engines, particularly Google, the different methods each of us used can produce varied results. Well up till two weeks ago, I was getting tired of the same old link building techniques not yielding me much progress to my search engine ranking. Sure I do have a good number of keyword phrases in page 1 but there are many others getting stuck at page 2and 3. But isn’t that a familiar story you might add? Yes that’s true but I changed all that 2 weeks ago I found what could be a phenomenal new link building technique. Backlink Building Program I joined Angela Edward’s backlink builder’s program after stumbling across it in the Warriors Forum while working on my blogging service for my client. Is doing this legitimate?

Absolutely. It’s white hat. It’s not buying links. It’s just giving you a list of very high dofollw PR sites which Angela painstakingly locate them for your link building.

Most of these 30 links in each packet are probably not your niche type. Is that a problem?

Most SEO consultants would agree that relevancy of the site linking to you is very important and you’ll get more value from a site linking to you from the same niche. But on the same breath, I asked Nicolas Prudhon why then did I get such good results when they are not relevant sites. He says:

“Well, when you talk about PR6 to PR9, even with lower value, there’s still hell lot of link juice passing through. Even if a PR9 only valued at PR6-7 that’s still bound to bring some value.   -Nicolas Prudhon, SEO Strategist“

Remember The Google Dance

If you do lots of backlinking or if you intend to purchase a packet here to start, it’s good to know this. There is a phenomenon called ‘The Google Dance’. Shortly after you do the linking you will see movement in Google. Soon after this you may see your site go back and forth in SERP and may completely disappear like it got de-indexed. It didn’t and it’s quite normal. It’s not a penalty and it’s only temporary and you will get your site back in a couple of days.

I guess most of you by now know the power of ‘do-follow’ backlinks although I won’t be drawn into a debate on why you chose to no-follow your links instead, if you did.

Did you notice my last post and this post is centered on free backlinks and how to get them? Well that’s because I’m currently doing lots of link building for the last few days and I’m pretty much focused on backlinks and a new link building strategy.

My next post too will talk about backlinks, the relevancy of backlinks and specifically some of the myths people are still swearing by. Going by what I’ve been doing for the last few days, I have to say I’m going against all conventional wisdom of these people and what we were schooled to believe. Get Do Follow Backlinks from Google

While many people know about this and I’ve known and done it since about 6 months ago, I still think there could be some who have never realized this – You can get free do follow backlinks from Google .

Here’s what you should do:

Simply open a Google account and then setup a public profile by going to: http://www.google.com/s2/profiles/me/editprofile

If you have been using any of Google’s services like Adsense, Gmail, or Google Analytics, then you should already have this Google account. Then just go to this link to setup your public profile. One of the main objectives of setting up a public profile is really so that people can find you. So when you are setting up your Google profile you should opt for your full name to be displayed in Google’s search results. In this way people can locate you easily and quickly on the web.

Your profile id should look something like mine: http://www.google.com/profiles/100898042593956290143

Okay, now here comes the most interesting part – the “do follow’ part. A little lower down on your profile page, you will see a section where you can add as many custom links as you like for your profile page. Here you can put your “anchor text” in the “Link name” box. All of your links would be visible on the right hand side of your Google profile. The good thing about this Google Public Profile page is that it looks for other public pages you have already created and lets you add to your profile. For example you may have created your Google sitemaps when you recently setup some new blogs. They will be shown here and you can easily move the links to Google Public profile. 

How good are these Google backlinks

Well these backlinks are do-follow links. They are from Google which is PR10. Now you’re not going to say you’re only getting your backlinks from your Google Profile page which is PR0 are you? If you are, then you really have to read up my next post which I will discuss one of the greatest myths: “leaving your link on an “inner page” that is new or has a low or 0 Page Rank inside of a high Page Rank domain will do your site no good.”.
