What Was My Mistake On Top Search Engine Ranking?

Well  I was chatting with a good friend of mine online one day, someone who was already earning himself more than 100 dollars a day. I asked him what advice he could give me for a site that is already on Google No. 1 Position? I asked him specifically if I should continue doing link building or should I just ease off, leave it and focus instead on other sites. The reply came quick and he said something like “Don’t do anything. If it ain’t broke why fix it? ” That was 2 years ago.

Well fast forward to today, 2 years later, if someone were to ask me that same question, I would have a totally different answer for him or her.  I would say getting a site to Google’s No. 1 position is not the hardest part. The hardest part is knowing what you must do to keep that site ranking No.1 in Google.  There is no guarantee that it will remain there forever as most of your competitors are like you too. They will in no time displace your site’s position if you choose to be naive. Also Google is always changing its ranking algorithm. Think of Panda and you will understand just what I mean. There’s no rest for the wicked it seems!

The tip I am going to share with you today is found in a post I wrote sometime ago when I first discovered the article distribution site called Ezarticlelink. My intention then was to create some backlinks for my Learn Affiliate Marketing blog since I had neglected this blog and had practically zero backlinks. So I set up an Article Directory on the blog. Well after 1 year the site has now 1700 indexed pages, 1271 backlinks and PR1. Not bad for just setting it up and doing nothing because these backlinks are generated on auto-pilot.

 How I Get Free Backlinks For Another Site

This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites-sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites-sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.

What’s The Impact:

This change is impacting about 12% of search results, so many people have been greatly hit by this search algorithm change by Google.

Niche sites have been hit most simply because many people have been exploiting the relatively easy opportunity to earn quick money online this way. Even the recent Google May Day debacle did little to keep them away from going the easy route including creating MFA (Made for Adsense) sites at their own risks. Even if their sites were not specifically MFA, they still resorted to using clever softwares e.g. auto blogging software that could scrap content easily from other websites.

Google was targeting sites that are low quality and specifically those that do not add value for people. Some article directories fall into this category although interestingly with different magnitude. Even Ezinearticles took a hit although not as much as others. On the other hand I cannot understand why Hubpages took a very big hit from this algorithm change since it only accepts unique content before approving these pages. But as of now, duplicate content is still not penalized so long as they are not found on the same site.


Has the new Google Algorithm affected my 20+ niche websites?

No it has not and that is a relief. I can only say many of my niche sites’ keyword ranking remains the same because I preferred to focus on writing quality contents on my niche sites. I avoided any black hat techniques as I like my visitors to have a feel good experience when they land on my sites, even if they are a small niche site. So it pays to have unique content sites with good, useful information and it just reaffirms what Google looks for in a good website.

I did have a couple of WordPress blogs that are run completely on auto-pilot but not using the much Google loathed auto-blogging plugin. I used the WordPress plugin called UniqueArticleWizard, to publish free unique articles. I would say Google does not mind this because they are as legitimate as can be as I link back to the author of these articles. It would be kind of like guest posting on my blog.

Well let me know if you were affected by the Google Search Algorithm change in anyway. It just means that Google can be tough if it felt there was a need to make big changes even if it incurs the wrath of thousands of bloggers who are always thinking of clever and faster way to learn how to make money blogging.

Today Dec 31, 2010 is definitely a good day as it marked the day I launched my first Authority website. Yep, finally after a month of deliberating and doing some research as to how I should do this, I bought the necessary tools and blueprint, and I have today published my website and 4 “authority” pages.

Part II of my Adsense journey Begins

For those of you who remembered about 15 months ago I started my adsense journey and bought myself the now famous Micro Niche Adsense Course from XFactor as well as XsitePro, a powerful web building software and launched more than 20 niche sites during this time.

Well guess what…looks like history is about to repeat itself. Part II of my adsense journey begins officially today and I’m turning 3 of these niche sites into authority websites as well as adding a brand new health niche authority website. I’m still following XFactor (John)’s method only this time he just released his latest blueprint for ‘Advanced Adsense Publisher Guide to Making More Money With less sites‘. That’s perfect for me as I’ve recently stopped adding more niche sites and a few months ago already had thoughts of making a few of my sites to authority sites. I guessed John must have read my mind.

Why Authority Websites?

I’ll be perfectly honest with you. For a long time I was living under a misconception of what an authority website really is and who is fit to create one. I once thought that only the “big guns” or the more established marketers should be the ones since they already have the “authority tag” accorded to them. Not quite really as I found out recently.

Now I know an authority website need not be another CNN or Yahoo News nor must it be the most beautifully designed site. In short you and I could well launch an authority website within the next 1 week – if we wanted to that is. I’ve experienced some success in building niche sites and now building a few authority sites is just putting that icing on the cake. I called it a natural progression. It’s also called focusing on the long term, creating passive income and generally working towards making more money online only this time using few sites

Some Information about XFactor’s Authority Site Adsense Guide

It would be impossible to give a meaningful review of this advanced adsense blueprint without giving away all his techniques and that would be unethical so I won’t even go near there. So if whatever little information I could share with you may seem somewhat hard to comprehend, please excuse me and you would know why this is so.

It’s a very comprehensive book and John goes into great length to make his 217 pages book so easy to understand. It’s not an extension of his earlier book which I bought 15 months ago; it’s his second book. There are many tips that he gave but to me the most important thing I learned from him was how he makes creating authority websites so simple.He made it look simple because he teaches how to theme our articles as a part of his technique. He uses Web Content Studio to help find all the theme words for any articles we plan to write, articles that Google loves.

If you do not know what “theming an article is”, think LSI and long tail keywords to give you an idea. It’s also about how it will get you lots of traffic even if the keywords are highly competitive. So if you’ve been trained to believe you should only do keyword research and focusing on choosing keywords that have more traffic and less competition, that’s old school and a lot more difficult to do, I might add since everyone does that. With theming, it’s about less traffic as far as all the keyword tools tell you, insane competition but you still get lots of traffic all the same. It sounds a little hard to understand but the ebook will go into every great detail. It’s worth the $39 I paid for (first timer to his course pays $97).

I have just learned the proper way of ”siloing” my sites and that is not only good site structure for easy navigation on your site by your visitors, I’ve learned long ago it’s good for SEO too. Well that’s just a small part of what his Adsense Guilde teaches, the same techniques he uses to now make over $1000 per day.

How I Use Web Content Studio To Write Articles For My Authority Sites

This strategy is simple yet very powerful. When I first read about it, naturally I was simply amazed at this technique. I was hoping I could save some money not buying the tool and tried to do the work manually. The result – it’s too tedious and time consuming and at the end left me frustrated because I couldn’t check how well or badly I had done the “theming” process myself. And I can’t possibly do this for every article that I write. Well enter Dr Andy Williams’ Web Content Studio that cuts down 3 hours of research work to a mere few minutes. I relented, paid for this tool and now think this is the best tool I’ve ever come across.

With theme keywords strategy,I write my article relatively long – about 1000 words but with this tool, it’s really quite easy but you just follow a “process”.

What is Web Content Studio?

It contains a set of tools in a suite all under one big software application. This explains the name “studio” and all the tools are located on conveniently placed tabs that you can click to easily go to. So you have a scratchpad that has an auto “grabber” feature that copies whatever research work you choose from any website that you conveniently placed in your “bookmarks”, another tab in this software suite. Other tabs include ‘Editor”, ‘Researcher’, ‘Keywords’ and ‘Notes’.

These tools are cleverly thought of by Dr Andy Williams to help you research the keywords that Google expect from authority sites whenever you write your contents. So if you are planning to write an article on say “affiliate marketing”, this tool will query Google  for the phrase “affiliate marketing”, and visit all the relevant pages listed at the top 10 (you select how many) sites and extract for you all the theme words like “affiliate”, “network”, “advertising”, “commission:, “merchant” and theme phrases like “contextual advertising”, “revenue sharing”, “cost per action”, “compensation methods” used by these top 10 sites Google ranked.

Once you have these keywords presented in a report (again all shown in this “Studio”) the objective is to write your article (Editor tab) that includes all these theme words and theme phrases. How many and what words you used are really up to you (you just put a ’tick’ on these words) but in the manual that comes with your purchase of Web Content Studio, Andy explains and provides suggestions based on not just his theory but showing you his real live cases and the results achieved. The result is that you will learn just what it takes to write your best article with these theme words and phrases that Google expects to see.

Here is a quick summary of the process flow when I write each of my well themed articles (in WCS):

1. Create a blank article page
2. Do keyword research.
3. Clean the list using the compare against top 10 so you only get the most popular words in your final list of theme words.
4. Write your article.
5. Check theme of article.

I guess only you will have the answer. For me, because I write articles everyday either researching for my clients when writing their articles or I write for my top niche sites especially the 3 sites that I decided to make them authority sites. This software is saving me lots of tedious time in my article research. The best part of using this tool for me is that I actually look forward to the next article that I write. I have to say both this and writing 1000 word articles 2 weeks ago would have been an insane thought.

This is probably the easiest trick, if you wish to call it that, to get unique contents in the eyes of Google posted on your home business blog in just 5 minutes. Yeah call it my Halloween “trick n treat” candy for you if you will.

In my treat for you, I’m going to show a real live case(ok not live but about 20 hrs delayed) how I published a post on my affiliate marketing blog http://www.ereviewer.net in just 5 minutes and another few more minutes for Google to index it.

1. My Objective

To quickly search for someone else’s published post and republish it as a unique content on my own blog. (Don’t worry it’s all legitimately done)

2.Who will most likely benefit from doing this?

1. those who re-publish other blogger’s work either because you like the content or you do this to grow content on your own blog
2. those who use PLR articles for their blogs
3. autobloggers, content spinners
4. those who like free content but have problems indexing such content because such duplicate contents, although you won’t get penalized, often don’t get indexed. Even if they do get indexed it’s usually relegated to Google’s supplementary index and that won’t help in your search engine ranking.

Ok, my demo begins…

1. Go to Google and search for “learn affiliate marketing republish“. I do this because “learn affiliate marketing” is my main keyword phrase for my affiliate marketing blog. I added the word “republish” because I follow good ethics and republish articles only if the author or article directory specifically allows free publications.

I found one article found in an article directory that allows republication:

**for best results, choose a post that has been Google indexed and is quite highly ranked, but I guess you would have figured it out already:-) **

2. Next I copy the whole article text and paste it onto my ‘wp-admin/add new post’. Scroll down to find the ‘wpUnique’ section and under ‘Uniquefy Mode’ put ‘Truly Unique’ and ‘Uniquefy this post’ as ‘Yes’ like this:

Then put in the usual tags, category, snippet etc like you usually do and then hit Publish’. That’s it you’re done! Yeah in less than 5 minutes  I might add. (note: you must upload the wpunique plugin before you can see the Uniquefy section on your wp-admin page. Also don’t forget to link a couple of keywords to your money making websites like or home business blog I did)

3. Finally to check that my newly published post has been indexed by Google, I go to site:www.ereviewer.net and after about 2 minutes later found it indexed. Here’s the result (I changed the title for demo purpose but when you do this it’s better to keep the title ‘as is’ to respect the author’s post)

and my republished post url is this: http://www.ereviewer.net/learn-affiliate-marketing-tips

Hey even Google has placed its trust on my republished post as I also received a ‘Google Alert’ email at the same time. The mail just shows that it has been indexed and published and sent to many others who have similarly subscribed to ‘Google Alert’ notification service:

How does WPUnique plugin make a duplicate post unique?

I’ll probably spare you the technical details or you can check more of that from the plugin owner website (Steve Pullman). But essentially this is how it does. It creates unique content from what everyone generally calls it  “duplicate content” and this tool merely uses html encoding to cause the search engines to look at your blog post as unique content. This way your republished post gets placed ahead of others using that same content.  Steve adds:  “all we’re doing is converting the source code from ascii text to legitimate html codes.” Sounds simple!

The thing about Duplicate Content

The topic probably has been debated and argued umpteen times in Internet Marketing forums and other places but let’s add one more to it. You’ve long heard of the “Duplicate Content Penalty”? Here’s what everyone knows after all these discussions: It doesn’t exist


If you’re re-using content that is found on another website: The DUPLICATE CONTENT PENALTY DOES NOT APPLY i.e you won’t get into trouble with Google. You will however get into trouble with the author if he did not expressly given anyone permission the right to use his article. That’s plagiarism (hence my checking for this permission in my demo here)

What will Google do if you used other people’s content

Well if you used and publish duplicate contents, your content will most probably end up in Google’s supplemental index. Yeah call it a Google’s cold shoulder treatment, being online ostracised or anything you want, you wont get much benefit being here.  Aaron Wall has this to say about Google’s Supplemental Result:

“Since supplemental results are not trusted much and rarely rank they are not crawled often either. Since they are generally not trusted much and rarely crawled odds are pretty good that links from supplemental pages likely do not pull much – if any – weight in Google. ..”

Final Thoughts

This wpunique plugin is not free but costs just $37 and the version 2 is just out. I used this plugin because lately I have created many niche blogs and this plugin is taking away some of the hard work that I used to do before -updating blog contents.

Writing the contents manually is still the best if you can afford the time and I have to agree that when you write it yourself you can optimize the post much better. But for niche bloggers like myself, this is the perfect tool that helps me automate some of the work and I feel good knowing that this is as legitimate as it gets and helps me rank too.

If like me, you have been doing Internet Home Business for some time, I bet you probably have some PLR articles lying around. Yes probably abandoned, forgotten and collecting cyber dust or cyber cobweb in your computer? Well why don’t you start to make good use of it for your home business blog, niche marketing or whatever you do that requires article writing?

Although on some occasions you buy PLR articles, most time you can get them for free. But most people used them only for a short while and stopped. Why? Well it’s too tedious even to just publish them even if you know they can provide useful resource to benefit your home business. But here is a good tip I’m going to share with you that I have been using. You can even automate the process – well sort of.

How Should You Use PLR articles on your blog?

Now as you know I create lots of micro niche websites and I write quite a bit to update the content of these websites. I used a lot of information from these free PLR articles, although I don’t use them “as is” – I rewrite them. You must know these same articles have been used by hundreds of people as they published on their websites. You won’t get into trouble with Google for putting   content on your blog that has been published elsewhere, as we know this is a myth.However you won’t get much benefit either because your content is deemed as not unique. Moreover you lose Google’s trust in your website when you do this. That’s possibly a greater sin for us Internet Marketers don’t you think?

How I used Free PLR articles for my niche websites

Step 1 – Go search for your free PLR articles. Simply go to Google and do a search for ‘your keyword + PLR’

Step 2. Sign in to your Blogger Blog and go to ‘New Post’

Step 3. Copy and paste your PLR article and use the title and body exactly “as is” for the time being. Don’t publish yet.

Step 3. Go to ‘Post Options’ at the bottom of the page. Under ‘Post date and time’, click ‘Schedule at’ and put a later date

Step 4. Now this is the step that requires some work from you. Rewrite your post title and body text to make it unique. You can choose to do this work anytime before your published date.

Step 5. Your scheduled posts get published at your scheduled dates automatically and run like clockwork.

Does this method work?

Yes absolutely. But only if you are a little disciplined and try to follow a fixed routine like re-writing your PLR articles daily, weekly, monthly and setting your scheduled dates to suit this time frame. Try to find what’s best for you that works and stick to a routine.

Why I used this method

• Well I have 20 niche sites and free PLR articles provide a good resource for my sites as I need to increase content and update them regularly.
• For some of my niche sites, just re-writing them is quite easy as the topics are usually simple as I target mostly product niches. It’s a lot easier than rewriting contents for ‘Internet Marketing’, ‘How to make money blogging’ that kind of stuff.
• Because Google owns Blogger – that’s a good reason
• I used it for good link building for all my niche sites

Final Thoughts

Using free PLR articles can serve your home business well if you learn how to do it right. Working at home takes a lot of your time as your Internet Business grows so learning a thing or two about automating your processes can really help.

Have you heard of EzArticleLink, the system that helps to create lots of one-way backlinks for your blog?

While many SEO factors are responsible for your website to achieve top ranking in Google and other search engines, it is building an enormous amount of backlinks over time that’s most important.

I have to say today while the whole concept of building continuous backlinks to your web page never changes, the different ways how you go about doing it always does. You marvel at some of the ingenious software and tools that people come out with. Each time you stumbled onto one, you can’t but want to try it, to get the most of it, especially when it is absolutely free!

EzArticleLink – what is it?

Essentially it’s a tool that lets you spin and syndicate your articles. If you joined the free membership, you will need to create an article directory on your blog.

1. Using its tool, you can customize your page to look like any other page on your blog. Here look at mine from my Learn Affiliate Marketing Blog to get an idea.(I’m still in the midst of housekeeping and touching up the look and feel of it and getting the ‘categories’ to show up)

2. For every domain that you put an article directory on, you are allowed another domain in which you can use it as a “post only” domain. This means you can use it solely for link building and to spin any of your articles and submit them for their approval. Once approved your spun articles will be published to about 200 members’ article directories which are created from their blogs just like mine.. That’s how you get your one-way backlinks. Pretty cool huh?

Any reservations in using it?

I think the benefits of potentially getting many backlinks are quite obvious but there could be people who have some reservation on putting an article directory on your blog. You may think having a topic like “Tips for Winning Back Your Girlfriend” is well kinda out of place in a blog like “Home Business Blog“. That’s because this is a general article directory like ezinearticles and you will find many articles get published that are totally unrelated to your blog theme and topics.

Personally I don’t think these unrelated articles will hurt my blog. If this were true, why would Google rank Ezinearticles or Wikipedia so highly? But it’s also nothing new too actually as lots of bloggers set up an article directory within their blogs.

If you are still unsure, you don’t have to use your make money blog but choose another blog that you know you have neglected or not getting too much traffic. Then in your “post only” domain allowed by EzArticleLink, put your top blog for your link building and article syndication purpose.

How do I like using it

Well I have to say I’m still a new member. My domain approval only took 2 days and yesterday I used one article to spin it for their approval. If you are familiar with how to spin an article (like Free Traffic System), it’s a breeze. I took about an hour to complete mine but should easily do it in 30 minutes once I’m more familiar with the system. So it’s 30 minutes of work to get a possible 200 backlinks. Going along with the recent post of Peter, Article marketing is probably one of the most discussed topics in my forum with people asking me daily whether or not it really helps with SEO.. People are divided between 3 categories when it comes to talk about article marketing on internet:

3. People who don’t know about article marketing.

This article is for the people in the 3rd group, namely the ones who have no experience with article marketing and are wondering what its worth.

What is Article Marketing?

Article marketing is an online strategy that consist of you writing a quality article (in theory), and making it available for other people to use and republish on their site. Of course, since all labors require compensation, you’ll be rewarded for your generosity with a one way backlink towards your site, as well as a short biography of yourself. Here are the traditional steps taken:

1. Write an article.
2. Submit it to an Article Directory.
3. Wait for your article to be reviewed and approved.
4. Once your article is approved, it will be made available to visitors of the Article Directory.
5. People download your article.
6. People publish your article on their site.
7. You get visitors and backlinks from all the sites that re-published your article.

Your personal involvement pretty much stops at step #2, after that you can just sit back and relax, everything else is automated and doesn’t require your participation. Depending of the article directory you submit your piece to, it can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few months to get your article reviewed and approved. Also, keep in mind that all articles submitted are not automatically approved, so take the time to write properly.

Why You Should Love Article Marketing?

When it comes to SEO, article marketing offers an incredible feature, and that’s to build a potentially unlimited and constant flow of one way backlinks towards your site. The leverage on article marketing is huge as one person only needs to write an article once, submit it to a specialized directory where more and more people will then re-publish it giving you more and more one way backlinks without you having anything to do for it. Each of the articles have submitted in the past is being reused 300 times in average at least. That means for each article I wrote, I got over 300 one way backlinks. Another interesting aspect of those links from a SEO stand is the fact that they come from diverse domains, which is a great thing, and that they don’t appear all at once, but rather over time as all the people don’t publish your article at the same time. It’s a onetime effort, and a lifetime one way link building machine.

Why You Should Hate Article Marketing?

There’s a sound difference between theory and reality. Most of the articles in those article directories are of very low quality and some really limit spam junk. This having for resulting effect that you are very unlikely to ever get your article noticed further than the article directory itself. If spending so much effort for that, you are better of publishing on your own site instead. Even if your article get picked up, more often than not, it will be by automated scrapping software, and your article will be published on a rubbish site where no one will see it. Not only no one will see your article and you won’t get traffic from it, the pages where your article will be published are most likely to be in the supplementary index, if indexed at all. In SEO term, this means that the backlinks you get from there are worthless. At worst, you’ll get dishonest publisher who won’t give you credit at all, and steal your work to make it theirs. Article marketing ends up being a huge waste of your time, resources and talent. If you want quality backlinks, there are many other ways to do so.

In Conclusion

The truth is that no one side is more right than the other. I personally like article marketing as it helps in many other ways beyond SEO, such as branding to me. I’ve got thousands of visitors coming from those republished articles to my site, and in some instances was even lucky enough to get my articles in pages on the primary index and get people commenting on them, building valuable SEO backlinks and reputation for myself. On the other hand, I’ve also experienced people trying to steal my content, and honestly, majority of the backlinks I’ve got don’t bring any or much link juice. If you really plan to get a high PageRank, I don’t feel that article marketing is the way to go for you. On the other hand, if you plan to increase your exposure, or do increased of deep linking on your site, I would strongly recommend you to include Article Marketing as part of your SEO campaign.

Article Marketing is one of the best free effective methods you can use to promote your website and all your marketing campaigns.

If you’ve gone through my blog archives, you would have noticed that I don’t have many posts on article marketing. That’s not to say I don’t believe in it or know how essential it is for getting backlinks and free traffic to your website or blog.

I stopped writing to article directories temporarily for at least a year because I wasn’t getting any traffic then, despite getting lots of backlinks. I used that break to focus on other aspects of the business, blogging being one of them. Well now I’ve resumed doing article marketing. Want to know the reason why?  Well I am now doing freelance writing articles and every week I write at least 5 articles and publish them at selected article directories. But most importantly I found the mistakes I made that caused me not to get much traffic for the articles I posted one year ago.

Article Writing Mistake #1 – Lack of Article Marketing Research

When I first started article writing I did so without doing any research on how successful authors write and the techniques they used. My mistake was to just focus on the relevant keywords and start cracking. As a result, my posts were generally too long. The correct technique is to write short articles about 270 – 300 words.

Article Writing Mistake #2 – Article Contents not Scannable

Whenever I visit an ezine site looking for ideas, I usually don’t like to read long articles. I’ll just read the first paragraph and moved on. However if it’s long and has good sub headers, I’ll just read these headers only. If they are long, without eye catching presentation, I skip them. I realized now I was guilty of many of these same article writing mistakes then.

Article Writing Mistake #3 – Article Headlines didn’t grab my readers’ attention

I learned that in an article, there are just 2 places where you can grab the attention of a reader. The first is the title or headlines and the other is the bio text. Looking back, I have to admit most of my articles’ headlines or bio text could have been better written in these 2 areas.

How you can use these article marketing tips to help improve your web traffic?

1. Reaching out to more people

If you think you have written a good article, don’t you want to share it with others. When you choose this method of submitting your articles to ezine directories, nothing really stops you getting the traffic. If you are are new marketer, it gives you better results than writing on your new blog which may not be indexed, have no traffic or no search engine ranking. But when you submit to article directories, all it needs is good content and good article writing technique to bring in traffic.

2. Get High Search Engine Ranking

Even with a short article, you could make it search-engine friendly by optimizing your article using good keyword phrases that can give your articles a high search engine ranking.However avoid using too many keywords. In fact for a 300 word article, I usually use about 3 keywords.

3. The Use of Readers’ Comments and Testimonials

When you received good reviews and testimonial, put them to good use on your website or blog. Find a relevant post in which you can use them to promote your products or substantiate an opinion on your topic of discussion. It does give you that extra weight besides looking nice on your blog or website as it helps to build your reputation, or the authority that you site projects or at least tries to.

IMHO testimonials are very powerful statements as they come from people who shared similar experiences or who have just used and loved your product or services. Sometimes they serve as your customers’ deciding vote before buying your product.

Final Thoughts

Even after one year of neglecting article marketing, I’ve finally realized how much I could have gained had I known some of the things I learned only recently. But on the other hand I prefer to look to the future and not what could have been. I’m pretty fired up on article writing especially after having learned some of the best kept Article Marketing Secrets from the gurus.

I’ve been very encouraged by the good article stats I’m seeing in my Ezinearticles submission. In fact it was this one post which got 100+ views the day after it was published that got me curious as to how that came about, something unheard of when I last wrote articles for them.
