Today, especially with what we have all been through with the economy, many people are wondering what the best ways to make extra money are. The internet has opened up a whole range of possibilities that are open to anyone. In this article, I would like to explore Affiliate marketing, which, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to make some extra money online.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Simply put, it is selling other people’s products and earning a commission on any sales you make. You can sell physical or digital products, each one having its own advantages.

Digital products normally offer a much higher percentage of commission and can be pretty fast movers if you are promoting what people are interested in.

Physical products, though offering a lower rate of commission, may be higher priced, so your commission can still add up to a good amount.

You will need to search for what fits into your niche the best. Always choose high quality products to offer as that is what will be best for your market and also remember that your name will be associated with the product.

Choose A Niche

You have heard the phrase “the jack of all trades, master of none” referring to someone who has a lot of skills in a lot of areas, but has not “mastered” any of them. It is hard to become successful if you spread yourself too thin. The same holds true with affiliate marketing. To be successful, you have to get to know your market and be known in your market. Your goal should be to become the “go to” person in that niche. Become acquainted with your market’s needs and interests. Write about them and offer them solutions to their challenges. They will soon be coming to you for advice and recommendations.

Let’s drill this down to an example. Instead of offering music CD’s, vitamins, apparel and a host of other items as an affiliate, concentrate on one niche. Let’s say you enjoy golf. As an affiliate, you could promote golf clubs and become an expert on which clubs are the best choice for individuals. Or you can go the route of offering golf clothing, shoes, and visors/hats. Even with a particular niche, it’s a good idea to narrow it down to a certain aspect. Then people know who to come to when they are looking for something in your area of expertise.

Affiliate marketing is a low-cost business to start and you can get going in it pretty quickly as you don’t need to develop a product. That is what makes it one of the best ways to make extra money.

With the growing popularity of part time online jobs and online advertisement, the passive income source that has gained prominence is PPC advertising. PPC stands for pay per click. Have you ever noticed that certain sites contain advertisements tempting the visitors to click them? If you have missed those details, I’m sure you have at least noticed the various Google Ads that flash up each time you visit certain sites. These are pay per click programs, allowing passive income through click counts. If you have a company or say, any product that you can advertise then you can earn some money by subscribing your product on an advertising site, say, Google or Yahoo and get paid based on the number of people actually clicking your advertisement. I’m sure you will not want completely trash visitors clicking your sites just for the sake of it. You will prefer visitors who are actually interested in your product or company so that they can turn out to be prospective clients. Passive income cannot be your sole intention. To ensure quality visits to the advertisement you are paying for, you need a proper management. Most automatic PPC programs have a link with the PPC sites where they pay visitors for visiting the sites. This way the click count increases without any benefit to the actual business. So choose your advertiser carefully by checking whether it includes a proper PPC management. Without a management, you might have the required traffic but ultimately no profit to showcase.

There are certain things you must keep in mind before and after choosing your company for PPC advertising. They should have a good reputation; they must meet your budget and employ a good PPC management system, as said before. The most important thing is that they must be able to produce very interesting advertisements with catchy lines and flashy designs. If you think as a layman user, you will understand that it’s a general tendency of human beings to go for something that looks simple yet attractive. This should be well taken care of. Initially you must invest a nominal amount just to check the performance and then after closely monitoring the responses you get, you can take the necessary decision.

If you want to explore other online passive income ideas you do have many options. If you know something unique like a rare recipe or a personalized home decorating technique or a computer hacking idea, then you can share them online and get paid. It’s like a royalty. The same applies if you write an eBook. If you are innovative enough then you can also sign up in sites letting you designs T-shirts for young and old and later sell them in sites like eBay. Online, being the fastest mode of passive income can quench your thirst of easy money very efficiently.

I don’t publish my blog income regularly like some bloggers do, although I used to a long time ago. This month, June however is somewhat special as it is the half year mark. For marketers and bloggers alike, you may have done your goal setting at the beginning of the year and June is a good time as any to take stock of where you are today and what changes you can make to achieve your 2010 goals.

Starting a new internet business opportunity is an exciting prospect. We have high hopes for success and we know that there are millions of people on the internet and if we can just get a tiny percentage of those people to visit our new web site, we will be home free. Sounds like a plan, right? The internet can be a confusing place to start a business, take it from someone who has over 30 years of on-land experience; the transition to the internet has its own set of new and unique problems to overcome before the money starts rolling in.

The first and most important tip I want to offer you is this one: the internet highway is not paved with gold, it is paved with obstacles that, if you are not aware of them, will trip you up on your way to what you may think is an easy way to make money. There is no easy, simple way to make money anywhere, least of all on the internet. The only people that I know of who are making easy money on the internet are the ones who are peddling the scams that say there is easy money to be made on the internet!

My experience has shown me that the reality of making money on the internet is this; it’s harder to make money on the internet for a similar land line business for the simple fact that there is a middle man between you, the business owner, and your potential customers, all of those millions of people zooming around the internet. Out in the real world, all you need to do to open up a business is to open a store and, if you were on a busy street, you would have customers in your store in the first 5 minutes. Not so for your internet business opportunity.

You set up your web site, you turn on the switch, you are live and open and then what? Where are the millions of people zooming around the internet, where are your customers? This is where that middleman comes in that I mentioned at the beginning. That middleman holds the key to your success and your traffic. The middle man that I am talking about is the gate keepers to the traffic on the internet, the search engines. Like you, I was obviously aware of what the search engines did, and was fairly familiar with how they did it, what I was not familiar with was how that all fit into me opening up my first internet home business.

A mistake that I made was not sitting down with someone who understood this relationship with a new internet business and how I needed to get set up properly to make sure that I would get a least a tiny fraction of all of that internet traffic. It does not matter how many millions of people are on the internet, if they do not know you exist, and visit your web site, you might as well be in the middle of the desert for all the good they are going to do you.

You need to zero in on any internet business opportunity you may be considering and ask yourself this one vitally important question;

“Who is going to know I am in business and how am I going to get them to visit my web site?“

You could end up with the best business on the internet, you could have the most amazing web site, none of that will matter unless you can solve the issue all internet businesses have, getting that all elusive traffic to your web site. I wish someone had written an article like this when I first started out. I wish they then would have stapled it my forehead and made me read it every day for a month BEFORE I did anything about starting my first web site. If they had, I would have done things 100% differently. Take my advice; address the traffic generating steps you need to take before you think about starting any internet business opportunity.

The best place to look for getting good solid free advice on this topic is the blogs and forums on the internet. There are hundreds of them out there, all of the advice is up there to read for free. The information in almost all of the cases comes from people who have gone through this situation and have advice on how to overcome this problem.

My advice on this topic is simple and direct; the way to get real organic traffic to your web site is to make sure you have the freshest, most original content on your market and the search engines and the traffic will find you, eventually! Have a great day.

I recently received an email from Jordan Cosh, from Profit-Smart Media asking me to do a review for a new product his company is releasing; It’s called “Rogue Marketing” – and while the title is painfully reminiscent of Sarah Palin’s biography, what I found when I opened the book up was little less than mind boggling.

First, to clarify, the book is about media buying – But I, like most of you, have spent the last couple of years assuming that media buys are reserved for super affiliates with massive advertising budgets.

Turns out, that’s not exactly true.

While the book is really, realllllyyyy long, what I learned was more or less fairly simple. I find sites using the instructions in the book, do a little research to match them to the right kind of offers, run through a handful of formulas to make sure I don’t lose any money – and I place the buy.

A little simplified, maybe; But all I can really say is that I’m shocked no ones published this stuff before now – Jordan says it in the book, but this is the OLDEST kind of online advertising there is. It also happens to be the cheapest; If you follow the game plan he outlines – Which is doubly surprising, given what I’d always believed about media buys in the past.

To cut it short, if your sick of burning money with PPC or having bad results with SEO, “Rogue Marketing” is certainly worth taking a look. Though from what I’m told, it’s not going to be available for long – His company is looking to groom a few hundred super affiliates for their new CPA network, and after that pull the plug on the product forever.

Recently while revisiting some of my older posts in my home business blog to do some tests on my Google Adsense placements, I came across my post titled: “If I Could Start My Blog All Over….” where I asked 4 of my blogging friends to give their thoughts on how different their blogs might be if they were starting all over again.

Well all of them said they would still have their blogs but with big differences in how they were to be built and promoted impacting domains, backlinks, blog marketing, blog theme among others. These are valid suggestions or improvements on their blogs which now begs the question : “How important do you value your blog?”. Would you have the courage or audacity to give up your blog now? Or would you have not started with a blog at all if you had to start your Internet Home Business all over again?

Well my good friend Tom Lindstrom from The Home Business Archive says “Marketing without a website can be done by building a list of subscribers and broadcasting messages to that list.” All that is needed, he says, is a monthly investment for a reliable autoresponder which costs about $20. That is relatively low maintenance although this expense could be about twice you would have paid hostgator every month to maintain your hosting account. But not having to update your blog frequently should make up more than the 10 bucks you got to dish out.

Going without a blog or a website is a serious decision to make and presumably you know what you’re doing if you’re seriously contemplating just that. Starting an autoresponder is not the only serious work you have to immerse yourself with. In Tom’s post, he advocates having a “system” to follow before you can start to run your home business. His system focuses on :

establishing yourself as an expert on whatever affiliate products you intend to market. My thoughts on this: Well some statistics I’ve come across put the affiliate marketing industry failure rate as 95% so obviously you have to strive to be in the 5% category of successful affiliate marketers.
using article marketing and promote extensively your affiliate products using both your article “resource box” and your autoresponder. Well that is something new for the average blogger and it’s for better usage than most of us could ever imagined.

My Final Thoughts

Personally, I would prefer having a blog and website than without one. The look and feel of a blog has changed over the years and somehow I get the feeling that people are more comfortable “talking” to someone on his blog than through his autoresponder. Nevertheless I know that the autoresponder plays a significant role in most successful marketers’ rise to fame and fortune.

A blog plays a big part in introducing who you are as an Internet Marketer through this communication channel. I have also yet to read many success stories of marketers who became exceedingly successful without a website or a blog. But of course it could be this ignorant me or the lazy part of me preferring not the road less traveled.

Blog Income-December 2009

December month seems to be pretty quiet because of the Christmas and New Year holidays. I guess people didn’t have much time to be online and that’s understandable. Noticeably my adsense profit fell from $104 (last month) to $77 because of this and also the dreaded Google Sandbox. Oh well I just have to work harder and set up more Micro Niche Adsense Websites.

Total income earned during December ‘09: $474.85. Some observations and actions to take in Jan:

2 newly created Micro Niche Adsense Mini Websites making my total adsense sites to 8. This month I failed to cross over the $100 adsense earnings like in November mainly because of the holidays and that 3 of my new sites went into the Google Sandbox. But I’m still pleased my Xfactor’s adsense sites have contributed 60% of the $77.00 Adsense income. The rest came from this blog and my homepage. Looking at percentage and not the dollars does put things into perspective as they are now the main contributor for my adsense earnings. It does give me more incentive to create more niche sites.
Again Angela Edward’s Backlink Program still delivers in terms of getting some passive income as backlink building is something you cannot stop even with 2 holidays. Most of the subscribers keep the subscription mainly because this program is helping them. It looks like I should focus a little more time to get more subscribers and grow this income a bit.

Blog Income & Stats – November 2009

Yeah it’s about that time of the month again to write about my blog income and stats so here it is again. I’m not sure if I will continue doing this for long though. I may just stopped for a while and do it again when there are more things to update. Anyway, here it is:

Income

Blogging Services – $128
Micro Niche Adsense Course-XFactor – $246.40
Google Adsense – $104.32
Angela Edward’s Backlink Building Program – $78.75
Micro Niche Finder – $43.59 (Clickbank)
Host4Profit (Reseller) – $10

Total income earned during November ‘09: $609.06 The good income was possible mainly due to:

more sales coming from XFactor’s Micro Niche Adsense Course (8 sales this month compared to 3 last month).
2 newly created Micro Niche Adsense Mini Websites making my total adsense sites to 6. They contributed earnings of $47.13 which made up 45% of November’s total adsense earnings of $104.32. It’s also the first time I crossed the $100 Adsense* threshold within one month so I’ll be getting my check early for this month instead of the usual bi-monthly frequency.

New FTC Guidelines-The Keyword is Disclosure

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) a US federal government independent agency has recently made changes to the policies governing the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising. This change is going to be effective Dec 1, 2009, so are you all geared up for this change and decided what are some of the blogging actions you will be taking?

I figured we have to understand just what this means to us bloggers and what actions we should take. I don’t speak for the rest of the blogging fraternity but personally I don’t like to be associated with FTC, Law, fines (yes $11,000) and most of all we certainly don’t want FTC to be behind our backs, when we’ve got enough of our business to handle.

So what does FTC New Guidelines say:

You can read the FTC document here but I thought I summarize what I think it means in a nutshell:

FTC requires and expects that bloggers who make an endorsement and receive either cash or payment in kind to disclose the material connections they share with the seller of the product or service.

What bloggers should be aware of

1. This means if you have accepted a sponsored post and get paid for it to do a favorable review, you will be subject to disclosure, not something you would normally do in the past. Also getting paid for it is not necessarily for cash but other free stuff that may benefit the blogger, his blog or his online business.

2. There is no real law binding this new guideline affecting bloggers which is a good thing. In the event that FTC does find any of your posts may have violated this new revised guideline, it will not fine you let alone $11,000 as previously thought so. Instead it then owns the burden of proving your guilt – of violating the FTC Act. But I don’t think you want it to come to this far, this possibility, right?

3. The original $11,000 fine for non-compliance that we have been hearing is not true as confirmed by FTC. In the worst case scenario, when a non-compliance is discovered, FTC will issue a warning to the blogger. However if your product is proved to have serious defects, it may be a different story to tell. I guess this means bloggers now have to be more careful with what products to promote or which merchants he partners with. You could say promoting freely in Internet has taken a whole new meaning now.

So how should you disclose

Unfortunately there is no clear definition provided by FTC how you should go about in your disclosure. I guess this means that each time you used a testimonial or other endorsement on your blog, you will have to reveal just what the average results actually are. In short, disclose and be compliant with FTC.

But it may be difficult to disclose what are the average results obtained for your product even if you wanted to. Well come Dec 1 don’t be surprised to see many websites or blog posts with such disclaimers like “the average person made 1 cent” or other similar ridiculous ones. It’s pathetic what this may be leading to but my bet is as good as anyone’s. Wanna bet?

Affiliate Links-Start to disclose

I know many bloggers don’t like to reveal which links are affiliate links on their website or blog post. Well the new FTC rule doesn’t give you a choice as it requires that you do so now from Dec 1. But you could see the positive side of things and use such disclosures to your benefit. If you truly believe in the product and the value it brings to people, putting a disclosure somehow gives your recommendation even more weight. You are seen to be both honest and truthful. Then again it depends on how your customers or prospects see you and if they trust you. So I guess building trust in them now has an added value.

In Conclusion

I really think the new FTC guidelines that are officially enforceable in 10 days time is not such a big thing as it sounded when it first got mentioned a couple of months ago. We ought to support it’s worthy cause which probably includes protecting the average consumer against fraudulent or unfair business practices. This change probably was meant to target the real advertisers, we bloggers just happen to get caught in the line of fire.
