Can a Small Home Business Compete With Big Online Marketers?

Most online home businesses start off their business the way we did too – from ground zero. Statistics have shown that there are about 95 percent of online marketers who failed their start-up business.

Well actually I’ve been seeing this 95 percent failure rate throughout my Internet Marketing journey. However although the failure rate is high, 95 percent is actually a myth as far as a report done in 1998 by www.sba.gov/advo/ shows. The SBA (Small Business Administration) report revealed that Sixty-six percent of new small businesses survived two years or more, and 40 percent survived six years or more.

How Do Small Webmasters Survive The Competition?

Be Creative

You are like a small fish in the big sea surrounded by sharks. You would want to stay away from them and when it’s feeding time, don’t bite more than you can chew.

Well if you got that analogy right, this means that when you first start out your online business opportunity, you don’t expect to compete with the big webmasters. Instead target less competitive keyword phrases and not those that you know the big websites are dominating. Start with a small niche and try not to venture into big niches like make money online, weight-loss.  However if you are already in such niches, just put on your creative mind on it. Go target a smaller sub-market.

How to target a smaller sub-market

OK if you are already in a big niche like make money online for some time, you could target a smaller niche like ways to make money online for kids.

The key to building a successful web business even on a small niche is to try to establish yourself as an expert in your area of expertise.

How Being Small Business Can Have Advantages

1. There are times being a small webmaster has its advantages too as it can allow you to use your creativity and get things done much faster than a bigger webmaster can. Why is this? Well big companies with big sites need to go through many layers of approval process just to get consensus from everybody on even the smallest type of change to be made on their sites or other matters.

2. The small Internet home business can so easily do any experiments, tweaking on any of their online marketing strategies and if they work, they can make any adjustments very quickly. They would be more willing and able to try out newer techniques in the market which the big websites just wouldn’t be able to do so.

3. The best approach and strategy for small business is to target a small niche, and slowly become an authority in that area. That’s also something I mentioned too in my previous post on my micro niche adsense next phase planning(Xfactor Niche Sites Building-1 Year Today!)

How your work at home site transforms depends on your ability, creativity, but hopefully you do all the things right to turn your small site into a very big and respected web home business.

    thanks for great post

  11. I don't see any advantage ot being big except maybe advertising budget. I believe that once a person begins to make money online they'll continue to make money. Making that first buck however is the key.

  12. Lena says:

Peter how many blogs do you usually post in the week?

  13. Thanks so much for the article!

I find small fish can do very well in the internet market “if” they stay focused.

I think a lot of times the problem with the small guy is that he can get TOO creative
and take to many side paths and wind up just spinning circles.

I really did enjoy your article though!

  14. peterlee says:

Al@Las Vegas movers: Well for one, being well established lets you mingle with other big marketers and sometimes makes things move a little faster …like joint ventures etc. Thanks for dropping by

@Seo Optimize: Thanks Michael for your kind words and yes we often go in circles or procrastinate way too much or over analyze things too often and get distracted….at least for me sometimes :-)

  17. feonareed says:

There might be some problem in starting but a small business can compete with bigger ones also. They just have to plan out correct strategy and implement it well.

  18. Hampers says:

I dont see why not – this is one of the things I love about the internet – it levels the playing field a bit. A one man band with the right knowledge and contacts can easily out rank and out perform a national brand.

  19. L505-GS5037 Review says:

Targeting niches is the key to competing with larger competition.

  20. Troy Draves says:

  24. peterlee says:

@Troy Draves: Hey good to see a fellow pipster here….Good luck on this business and thanks for dropping in. Keep in touch.

  25. The survey also revealed that small businesses anticipating growth are more likely to be using or planning to use email marketing.

  26. peterlee says:

@masters degree: Thanks for this added information. Appreciated

  27. Johnny says:

    Hey Peter,
In today's world people are starving to two things…..

    Connection and Contact.

I have yet to see (American big-business) give this to them.

If you won, or are thinking of owning a small business, DO IT. This world needs your brilliance, dedication, and passion.

  28. peterlee says:

@Johnny: Absolutely and that's why I am enjoying my own small business.

  29. peterlee says:

Sounds like your business is on the right track. Good luck on your business.

  30. Small home business can compete, I agree with that but not to the extent that it can level up with the big and authority sites as they are almost impossible to beat.

The advantage of small or personal home business sites is that it's more flexible and there are lots of rooms for changes and tweaks. But of course, small business sites are more affected with the search engine changes.

  31. peterlee says:

@Jewelry Making Supplies: I agree with you. Anyway we have to start small before we grow big :-)

  32. Jhon Smith says:

Very useful post to understand the value of small business, we often ignore small business compare to big online market, but this small one can also compete the big one.

  33. peterlee says:

@Jhon Smith: Yes absolutely, being a small business has its advantageous too. Thanks for dropping by Jhon.

  34. Agree! big things stuff starts from small stuff. I started with a very small blog before, not making any money at all until now but today I am managing lots of sites and others are indexed in Google news which I consider big stuff already.
